Hi everyone ~~ it's Sulyeon-i. 😊 There are certain foods you just have to eat when you visit Jeju. For me, Jeju means hairtail stew above all 🐟 There are so many great restaurants around Hyeopjae that it's hard to pick one, but this time I went to Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch, near Hyeopjae Beach, for Jeju-style braised hairtail.

Fish stew in Jeju always feels a bit special, and this place isn't too pricey and uses Jeju hairtail, so I decided to check it out.

Where Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch is and where to park

Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch is at 328 Hallim-ro, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si, close to Hyeopjae Beach. It's open daily from 10:00 to 22:00, and parking is available.

It's a great place to grab a meal after checking out Hyeopjae's ocean views. If you've already got Hyeopjae Beach on your Jeju itinerary, it pairs well as a meal stop. Looking at other reviews, plenty of people mention it's an easy walk from the beach.

If you're driving, there's parking right in front, and if it's full, there's a public lot nearby. Since so many people rent cars for Jeju trips, having parking is a nice bonus. 😊

Inside Onjeong Jorim: atmosphere and seating

Inside Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch, there was more seating than I expected — not just 4-person tables but spots for larger groups too, so it seemed good for families traveling together.

Sitting by the window let me enjoy the Jeju vibe while eating. It's less flashy-tourist-restaurant and more comfortable-everyday-meal, which I actually liked better. Since fish stew is often a family dish, having baby chairs on hand was a nice touch for parents traveling with kids.

Onjeong Jorim menu and prices

The signature dish at Onjeong Jorim is, of course, the braised fish.

  • 🐟 Jeju Manong hairtail stew
  • 🐟 Jeju Manong mackerel stew
  • 🐟 Jeju Manong mixed stew

They also serve whole grilled hairtail, charcoal-grilled mackerel, and fresh kimchi with boiled pork.

One thing worth knowing: the stews are only served starting from 2 portions. The Jeju Manong hairtail stew is ₩15,000 per person, so for two it's ₩30,000. For Jeju hairtail stew at a beach town restaurant, that felt reasonably priced.

If you can't decide between hairtail and mackerel, the mixed stew lets you try both — great if you want to sample everything. 😋

Jeju Manong braised hairtail: a layer of Jeju garlic on top

When my dish arrived, the first thing I noticed was the generous pile of garlic on top.

A pot of Jeju Manong hairtail stew topped with plenty of garlic

Compared to typical hairtail stew, the garlic topping gave it a different look right away. Hairtail sitting appetizingly in red sauce, garlic piled on top — the smell alone made me think of rice. 😂

Jeju Manong hairtail stew uses Jeju hairtail together with Jeju garlic. Onjeong Jorim notes that thanks to its location near Hallim Fisheries Cooperative, it can source fresh fish from the Hyeopjae area.

A piece of Jeju hairtail braised in sauce

Maybe that's why the hairtail flesh was soft and moist. And of course, the sauce is the most important part of any fish stew.

Is the sauce too spicy? Tasting the aged braising sauce

I tried a spoonful of the sauce and it wasn't nearly as sharp as I expected. Instead of just being hot and salty, it was spicy with a lot of savory depth.

A spoonful of the spicy hairtail stew sauce

It went especially well with rice. Flake off some hairtail, dip it lightly in sauce, put it on a spoonful of rice, add a bit more sauce... that's basically rice thief territory. 🤭

Hairtail flesh and stew sauce over rice

Onjeong Jorim says it uses a house-made aged sauce with no added seasoning — made with anchovies, vegetables, and radish simmered into a broth, then combined with the sauce. That might explain why it tasted clean and deep rather than just spicy.

The radish that makes braised hairtail worth it

When I eat hairtail stew, I love the radish almost as much as the fish.

A piece of radish fully soaked in the hairtail stew sauce

A piece of radish soaked through with sauce, eaten with rice, is just so good. The savory flavor from the hairtail and the sauce soaked into the radish made it soft and easy to eat. The hairtail was mild, the sauce was spicy and savory, and they balanced each other well — with the radish in between, my chopsticks kept going back for more.

Side dishes and the self-serve bar at Onjeong Jorim

Before the hairtail stew arrived, a set of basic side dishes was already on the table — bean sprouts, kimchi, fish cake, seaweed — all easy, unfussy sides.

Onjeong Jorim also has a self-serve bar, so you can grab more of any side dish yourself. When traveling, I sometimes feel awkward asking staff for refills, so having a self-serve bar was really convenient.

Mixing rice with the hairtail stew sauce and wrapping it in seaweed was a really good combination. Rice on seaweed, a little hairtail flesh, a bit of sauce — that's a proper Jeju-style bite! 🤭

The dish that keeps you reaching for more rice

The phrase I said the most while eating this stew was probably, "Should we order another bowl of rice?" 😂

A bowl of white rice served with the hairtail stew

I told myself I'd just eat the hairtail, but the sauce was so good I kept reaching for more rice. The fish was soft and the sauce paired so well with rice — a satisfying meal for a Jeju trip.

Especially after looking at the ocean around Hyeopjae, you get hungry without realizing it, and a warm bowl of rice with hairtail stew really filled that traveler's appetite. 😊
