Early lunch cold jjamppong in Paju Simhaksan: Dolpanseok Jjamppong

In short

Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch is a Chinese restaurant on Dolgotchi-gil in Paju, Gyeonggi, specialising in stone-plate jajangmyeon and jjamppong. Arriving right at opening for an early lunch, we ordered the nurungji stone-plate jajang, medium for two (28,000 won), with a handmade tungbosha set and the summer-only cold jjamppong (10,000 won), and the best part was scraping the scorched rice off the stone plate and mixing it into the jajang sauce. With free unlimited rice refills and a self-serve green onion kimchi bar, Dolpanseok Jjamppong is a filling stop near Simhaksan.

I ended up at Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch while looking for somewhere to eat near the Paju Lotte Outlet. Came home having eaten the nurungji (scorched rice) part perfectly too 💗 Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch 🔥

I heard there was a Paju Simhaksan restaurant with a distinctive menu, so I went to check it out. This is Dolpanseok Jjamppong Simhaksan Branch, home of the sizzling stone-plate jjamppong and stone-plate jajang that come out bubbling on a hot stone plate 🔥

Arriving at opening time: what the Paju Simhaksan restaurant looks like inside

The inside of Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch was spacious and looked like it could seat a lot of guests. When I visited a bit before the usual lunch rush (we pretty much always open-run^_^;), there weren't many customers yet, but by the time we finished eating and left, the place was packed — a true Paju Simhaksan restaurant ✨

Spacious main hall seating inside the restaurant
Wall-side tables divided by partitions

The place was clean, and the tables along the wall had partitions, which made for a good atmosphere for a cozy meal.

Is there a more generous restaurant than this? A sign said that regardless of party size, you can order a medium jajang even if there are four of you, or a large even if there are just two of you! I feel like I'm definitely the latter type 🐷🐽

The menu was really varied. Beyond the basic stone jajang and stone jjamppong, there's also whole octopus stone jjamppong and whole octopus stone jajang with 🦑 whole octopus in them ❤️

Free rice refills and the self-serve green onion kimchi bar

At Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch, you can freely help yourself to extra side dishes from the self-serve bar ❣️ Plus, rice is free, with unlimited refills as much as you want :)

Self-serve bar for extra side dishes

The basic side dishes at a Chinese restaurant are of course pickled radish and raw onion.

Basic side dishes: pickled radish and raw onion

And, there was green onion kimchi (pa-kimchi) available at the self-serve bar. You know eating jajangmyeon with green onion kimchi is pure bliss. The pa-kimchi was fermented just right, not too much — genuinely delicious!!!

Nurungji stone-plate jajang for two, tungbosha set and summer cold jjamppong

Our order arrived. We ordered nurungji stone jajang for two + the tungbosha set menu, plus cold jjamppong ✔️

Table spread with the nurungji stone-plate jajang set and cold jjamppong
Nurungji stone-plate jajang bubbling on the stone plate

The stone jajang comes out sizzling and bubbling on the stone plate! There's nurungji at the bottom, so be careful there — that's what makes it stick nicely so you can enjoy it even more later ⭐️

Stone-plate jajang with onion, seafood, and quail eggs

Loaded with onion and seafood, and I could spot some quail eggs too.

A bowl of the summer-only cold jjamppong
Close-up of the cold jjamppong's chilled broth

The summer-only cold jjamppong 🍜 Since summer is starting to wind down, I asked just in case it was still available, and luckily it was! Refreshing and tangy like a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) or bibim noodle broth, with a spicy kick mixed in 🔥 It paired really well with the stone jajang we ordered 👍

Mixing the stone-plate jajangmyeon noodles
Jajang rice made by mixing in the nurungji from the bottom of the stone plate

The seasoning was just right — nicely sweet jajangmyeon. Toward the end, mixing in the nurungji at the bottom turns it into jajang rice — pure magic 🪄 A real treat!

Four pieces of handmade tungbosha from the set
Comparing the size of the tungbosha by holding it in hand

Handmade tungbosha (fried shrimp toast), 4 pieces with the set

The tungbosha 4pcs that came with the set menu. They're really, reeeally chubby!! I've never seen menbosha (fried shrimp toast) this plump before 👀

I picked one up with my hand for scale — see? About the size of a baby's fist, with a super crispy outside and packed full of shrimp meat inside. Dolpanseok Jjamppong's tungbosha 💛

On our way out after finishing, there was even a dessert corner — rice crackers and yogurt drink 🥤 A refreshing way to finish, a truly delicious and filling Paju Simhaksan restaurant ⭐️
