Snow cheese on aged kimchi bone stew, Itaewon terrace: Nuri Maeul
In short
Nuri Maeul Gamjatang Itaewon Branch is a newly opened gamjatang (pork bone stew) and bone-braise restaurant on Itaewon-ro in Yongsan, Seoul. On a clear evening at a terrace table, a small mugeunji-ppyeojjim (aged kimchi bone braise) at 38,000 won came with snow cheese added for 5,000 won and a Terra beer, and the aged kimchi arrived in big whole pieces rather than chopped, which made the dish look impressive from the start. The spicy sauce plus the nutty melted cheese made Nuri Maeul Gamjatang a solid dinner and drinking-snack pick for a group.

Why aged kimchi bone braise for dinner in Itaewon?
Nuri Maeul Gamjatang Itaewon Branch's jjukeunji-ppyeojjim (aged kimchi bone stew) with snow cheese. I was thinking about what to eat for dinner in Itaewon and ended up going to Nuri Maeul Gamjatang Itaewon Branch for jjukeunji-ppyeojjim. I like gamjatang too, but that day I wanted something richer and spicier, so jjukeunji-ppyeojjim it was.

Newly opened. A fresh new spot — my favorite kind.

What the terrace at Nuri Maeul Gamjatang feels like
The weather was nice so I sat on the terrace. It wasn't crowded, so the vibe was really nice.

What we ordered and what it cost
- Jjukeunji-ppyeojjim (small) ₩38,000
- Snow cheese ₩5,000
- Rice ₩1,000
- Terra ₩6,000

Side dishes and the self-serve bar
The basic kimchi side dish is delicious.

The pickled onions are good too.

If you want more, you can help yourself at the self-serve bar.

A robot brings the food out. So cute.

The ugeoji (dried radish greens) soup that comes as a basic side. It's refreshing, so it's nice to eat this first.

The weather was nice, so I had a beer for the first time in a while.

Aged kimchi served in whole pieces, not chopped
The jjukeunji-ppyeojjim. When it first came out, I was surprised at how much bigger the portion was than expected. Especially since the aged kimchi wasn't chopped small but came in whole, chunky leaves — it looked great from the start.

Is the snow cheese add-on worth 5,000 won?
Adding snow cheese. I added snow cheese to the jjukeunji-ppyeojjim. With the cheese melted on top, the spicy sauce mellowed a bit and gained a nutty flavor too, which I liked. Eating the aged kimchi, meat, and cheese together was spicy and nutty at once — the kind of combo you keep reaching for. If you like spicy food but find it too intense sometimes, adding snow cheese could be a good option.

Everything we ate, all in one list
- 🥘 Jjukeunji-ppyeojjim — the whole kimchi leaves were generous and the sauce was rich, so it was delicious
- 🧀 Snow cheese add-on — adds a nutty flavor to the spicy bone stew, great to eat together
- 🍺 Terra — paired well with the spicy jjukeunji-ppyeojjim, refreshing to drink alongside

There was a good amount of aged kimchi too, so eating a piece of meat together with the kimchi was a great combo.

There was a lot of meat still attached to the bones, and it came off easily and tenderly, which I liked. The portion is generous.

The aged kimchi was cooked down soft and well seasoned, so it was delicious even eaten on its own. There was meat on the bones too, so it was fun to pick it off piece by piece, and the spicy sauce went well with the meat. Overall the sauce flavor was rich, the kind that makes you want rice.

What sets Nuri Maeul Gamjatang Itaewon Branch apart
The generous whole leaves of aged kimchi in the jjukeunji-ppyeojjim. I tend to prefer kimchi over a bone stew that's just all meat, so being able to keep eating meat and kimchi together was satisfying.

The portion is also quite large, so it's good for a group to share, and having an add-on option like snow cheese means you can customize it to your taste.

If you're looking for a spicy dinner or drinking snack in Itaewon, I'd recommend the jjukeunji-ppyeojjim or gamjatang.
