Hapjeong Korean BBQ with a 25-minute CatchTable wait: Champpoppo
In short
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is a retro pojangmacha-style pork rib restaurant on Yanghwa-ro 6-gil in Mapo, Seoul. Arriving at 7:40 pm on a Saturday with 5 parties ahead, the writer got in after only 25 minutes through CatchTable and ordered soy-marinated jjokgalbi (bone-in pork ribs), spicy jjokgalbi at both the mild (jjomaep) and extra-hot (geommaep) levels, a cheese fondue hot pot and draft beer. Free sides of chicken porridge and chewy honeycomb pork skin made the wait at Champpoppo feel worth it.

How long is the Saturday night wait at Champpoppo Jjokgalbi in Hapjeong?
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is a jjokgalbi specialty restaurant on Yanghwa-ro 6-gil near Hapjeong Station. Arriving at 7:40pm on a Saturday, there were about 5 parties waiting ahead, and after registering with CatchTable, I got the entry notification around 8:05pm.

On a Saturday evening, my partner and I were out on a date near Hapjeong Station and headed to Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch for dinner and a refreshing drink.
🌃 A retro pojangmacha hotspot where even the CatchTable wait was fun

Fitting for a weekend night, the whole street was lively with people, and arriving around 7:40pm, there were about 5 parties waiting ahead of us.
We quickly registered for the CatchTable wait, and around 8:05pm the entry notification came, and we happily headed in!

Since it's a fairly new spot, the interior was very clean while also recreating a retro pojangmacha feel with real style — I felt myself getting drawn into the mood the moment I walked in haha. The space was laid out well, perfect for a casual date but also for group gatherings or work dinners — a Hapjeong Station restaurant that already earned a passing grade just on atmosphere.
Chicken porridge and honeycomb pork skin: what comes free with the Champpoppo table
Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch's basic side dishes include hot chicken porridge, and once the grill comes out, they top it with corn cheese, potatoes and honeycomb tripe. That's why the 15-minute wait for the ribs never felt boring.
🍲 Chicken porridge as a basic side dish? Generous banchan and bomb steamed egg

Looking at the menu, the set menus were well put together and seemed to be what most people order, but we wanted to try a variety of flavors suited to our taste, so we combined a la carte items instead.

We ordered one soy jjokgalbi, one mild spicy jjokgalbi (jjomaep), and one extra spicy (geommaep) a la carte, plus a cheese fondue hot pot and draft beer on the side. We were told the ribs are pre-grilled over open flame right when you order, taking about 15 minutes.

While waiting, the basic side dishes came out first, and I was genuinely touched to see hot chicken porridge among them. One spoonful and it was fragrant with sesame oil and savory — perfect for gently soothing the stomach!
Once the grill arrived, they topped it with corn cheese, potatoes and honeycomb tripe, and tasting the tripe that came as a basic side first was honestly shocking!!

Not a trace of chewiness in the tough sense — just perfectly chewy and savory, to the point I thought 'is this actually a tripe specialty place?'

The bomb steamed egg that came out next was perfect, both visually and taste-wise, to snack on between bites of jjokgalbi.
Soy vs. marinated jjokgalbi at Champpoppo: how hot are jjomaep and geommaep?
Champpoppo's soy jjokgalbi had thick meat on the bone with seasoning that soaked in salty all the way through. For the spicy jjokgalbi, 'jjomaep' was just the right heat for a spice wimp like me, while my partner, who handles spice well, said 'geommaep' was deliciously spicy.
🍖 Packed with charcoal flavor and thick meat! The perfect harmony of soy and spicy jjokgalbi

And now, the moment we'd been waiting for — the jjokgalbi!! The staff kindly gave us a grilling tip: stand the ribs bone-side down, and once the bone starts to char, grill just 30 more seconds before eating.
They also noted that grilling too long lets the fat drip out and can lower the flavor — worth keeping in mind!

The soy jjokgalbi we grilled first had thick meat on the bone, seasoned salty all the way through, and the moment I bit in, 'delicious' just slipped out.
Dipping it in the cheese fondue and sauces doubles the savory depth. The middle-level sauce in particular was exactly my taste haha.

Next up, the spicy jjokgalbi! For me, a spice wimp, the 'jjomaep' was just the right sweet-spicy balance and kept my hand reaching back for more, while my partner, who can handle spice, said the 'geommaep' was just deliciously spicy.

For me, the geommaep was pretty spicy, but dipping it generously into the cheese fondue we'd added neutralized the heat and boosted the savoriness — an amazing combo. If you come to Champpoppo, you absolutely must add the cheese fondue🥹

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch was a Hapjeong Station restaurant great for pairing charcoal-scented jjokgalbi with a refreshing draft beer. The roughly 25-minute wait didn't feel wasted at all given the food, atmosphere and service were all excellent.
🍺 A Saturday night wait that was completely worth it — overall verdict

Thick meaty jjokgalbi packed with charcoal aroma, paired with a cold draft beer — the drinks just kept flowing on this Saturday night. Between the delicious food, the cozy retro atmosphere, and the friendly service, all three elements were perfect, so the wait didn't feel wasted at all!
