Seoul Korean BBQ with country doenjang jjigae: Sansol Sinnonhyeon

In short

Sansol Sinnonhyeon is an aged-pork Korean BBQ restaurant on Gangnam-daero 112-gil near Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Three friends ordered the 山san assorted platter for 2–3 people at 56,000 won, country-style doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) at 9,000 won and rice at 2,000 won, and the staff grilled each cut at the table; the pork tasted so clean that beer stopped mattering. Sansol Sinnonhyeon suits an evening when you want to focus on the meat itself.

I got off work early that day, so I decided to have dinner with Lily, who'd come up from Daegu after a while. Another friend who works near Sinnonhyeon happened to be free too, so the three of us decided to meet up for meat and beer after a long gap. While looking around for where to go, we landed on Sansol.

Usually on meat days I go in with the mindset of "let's eat well and have a drink too~", but since Sansol is an aged-pork specialty restaurant, I was already a little excited before we even walked in.

What is the dining room like at Sansol Sinnonhyeon?

Sansol Sinnonhyeon is on the ground floor along Gangnam-daero 112-gil, and once we arrived I was a bit surprised — the space was much bigger than I expected and the interior felt fairly upscale. Usually when I think of a BBQ restaurant I picture something casual and relaxed, but here the whole vibe was clean and polished, so it felt like a good spot for dinner with friends, and would work fine for a group gathering too.

Since there were three of us, we ordered the 山san assorted set for 2-3 people at ₩56,000. It was a great fit for sharing between three, so we didn't have to stress about picking cuts one by one from the start. While the meat grilled on the pan, we chatted, caught up on how everyone's been doing haha — since we hadn't seen each other in a while there was a lot to talk about, and with the meat cooking so nicely alongside it, even the waiting time was fun. And since the staff grilled it for us, we didn't have to worry about timing at all and could just focus fully on the conversation.

Apparently Sansol makes not just the meat but the sauces and banchan (side dishes) fresh every day. A BBQ place can already feel satisfying if the meat alone is good, but when the side dishes and sauces pair well too, the whole meal feels so much richer. We tried each cut on its own, then with the sauce, then with the banchan, everyone enjoying it their own way. Mixing and matching combinations like that was fun too, and with three of us doing it, the time flew by.

Staff grill every cut at your table

One thing I really liked about Sansol was the tableside grilling service at every table. At a BBQ restaurant you sometimes get so caught up talking with friends that the meat burns, or you lose track of when to flip it lol. But here, staff grilled each cut according to what it needed, so we could just sit back, relax, and keep chatting while we waited.

According to Sansol's own description, each cut of meat is grilled with a technique suited to it, so it comes out soft and juicy. They also use their own custom-made grill pans — specially cast iron pans that hold heat well, which is said to lock in the meat's juices. Eating it, I could genuinely understand why they bother with this kind of service.

Why the clean-tasting aged pork left us not wanting a drink

Finally, we got to try the nicely grilled meat. Honestly the strangest thing for me that day was that normally, after one bite of meat, I'd instinctively reach for a beer — but that day I found myself completely focused on the taste of the meat itself. It was clean-tasting and delicious overall, so I didn't even miss having a drink. Usually when I go for BBQ it's meat, drink, meat, drink — but that day all three of us just kept saying "wow, the meat here is really good." It wasn't so much that we didn't feel like drinking, more that we wanted to experience the meat fully on its own, if that makes sense.

Being aged pork, the texture was satisfying too, and what stood out most was the clean, light flavor. My friends said it was delicious too, which made me feel weirdly proud, like I was some kind of restaurant-finding pro lol. Having friends I hadn't seen in a while all agree it was good made me think, "glad I brought them here!"

The mushrooms and corn served alongside were really tasty too.

After eating so much meat, of course, us Koreans need rice lol. So we also ordered the sundried doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) for ₩9,000 and rice for ₩2,000. True to its name, the stew had that savory, slow-simmered flavor that was really appealing. A bite of meat, a spoonful of stew, then some rice together — it hit differently. The meat itself was so good that it paired well with rice too. By this point, our original plan of "let's eat meat and have a beer!" had quietly slipped to the back burner, and all three of us were just fully focused on the food haha.

What I took away from this visit to Sansol was that it's not just a place to grab a meal of meat and leave — it's better suited for a day when you actually want to enjoy the meat properly. The space is spacious and the interior is clean, so it worked well for dinner with friends, and thanks to the tableside grilling service it was easy for us to sit and talk after not seeing each other for a while.

The meat really stood out to me that day especially. Normally I'd be thinking about drinks the moment I start eating meat, but that day the meat was so good that I just kept eating it without even thinking about alcohol lol. It was that clean-tasting and delicious, and all three of us kept saying how satisfying it was the whole time.

So if you're looking for samgyeopsal near Sinnonhyeon, or a good BBQ restaurant near Sinnonhyeon Station, this place should suit anyone who likes aged pork. Next time I have a reason to eat meat around Sinnonhyeon, Sansol will definitely cross my mind again. This time we came for dinner with friends, but next time I'd like to try the other meat menu items, and maybe actually get that beer in properly haha.

A day of eating good meat and catching up endlessly with friends I hadn't seen in a while, finishing off with a hearty bowl of doenjang jjigae and rice. Getting off work early gave us the extra time to enjoy it all at a relaxed pace — a satisfying evening :)
