When you're trying to figure out what to eat in Sokcho, isn't sundubu (soft tofu stew) one of the first things that comes to mind?

Especially when planning a Sokcho trip, menus like Chodang sundubu, jjamppong sundubu, and seafood sundubu keep catching my eye. This time too, while looking for a hearty meal in Sokcho, I ended up choosing sundubu. That's how I found Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu. True to a proper sundubu specialist, they had a wide range of options from Chodang sundubu to spicy sundubu to bulgogi baekban, so it seemed like a good fit for family visits or groups eating together. What I really liked, though, was that it wasn't just a bowl of sundubu and done — the generous side dishes made it feel like a proper, complete meal.

Sokcho has so many good restaurants that it actually makes choosing where to eat harder. Especially while traveling, eating something too heavy feels like a lot, but eating something too light just leaves you hungry again in no time.

Personally, when I'm eating while traveling, taste matters, but how filling the meal is matters a lot too. That's probably why I naturally gravitate toward sundubu when I'm in Sokcho. I love the clean, mild flavor of soft tofu, and eating it in a spicy broth warms you up from the inside, which makes it great for breakfast or lunch. In that sense, Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu felt like an easy pick even when everyone in the group wants something different, since the menu is so varied.

Table set with the ordered sundubu and baekban

Here's what we ordered this time.

  • Spicy sundubu (hot pot) ₩14,000
  • Bulgogi baekban ₩14,000
  • Corn makgeolli ₩5,000

Sticking to one menu item is nice too, but this time I wanted to try both the spicy sundubu and the bulgogi baekban, so I went with both. Adding the corn makgeolli on top really pulled together that Sokcho travel-meal mood.

Spicy sundubu 🥘 fiery broth, silky-soft tofu

Spicy sundubu bubbling in a hot pot

The dish I was most looking forward to was definitely the spicy sundubu. It's made with house-made sundubu and soy milk, spiced up with chili oil and cheongyang chili peppers for a sharp, fiery flavor. Served bubbling in a hot pot, it looked warming just to see it.

Taking a spoonful, the soft tofu goes down almost cloud-like in the mouth, and while the broth is fiery, eating it alongside the tofu keeps it from feeling overly harsh — instead you get both nuttiness and heat together. I generally prefer sundubu jjigae where the broth isn't just aggressively spicy on its own but blends well with soft tofu, and this one really worked for me on that front. The kick from the cheongyang chili in particular went great with rice.

Bulgogi baekban 🥓 a hearty pot-served spread

Since sundubu alone felt like it wasn't quite enough, we also ordered the bulgogi baekban. It's ₩14,000, and rather than the usual hot-pot style dish, it comes out generously served straight from the pot, so it already felt substantial the moment it landed on the table.

When eating with a group, tastes can differ quite a bit, and it's great to have a bulgogi option alongside sundubu. Some people love spicy sundubu, while others prefer something sweeter and meat-based rather than spicy. Having both sundubu and bulgogi on the table together made the meal feel much more abundant.

On one side, spicy and warming sundubu; on the other, hearty bulgogi. It's the kind of combo that naturally empties a whole bowl of rice.

A meal made even more satisfying by generous side dishes

Personally, side dishes are something I quietly pay a lot of attention to at a restaurant. Even if the main dish is delicious, if the sides feel too sparse, the meal can end up feeling a bit lacking. But Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu served a generous spread of side dishes, which I really liked.

Eating sundubu and bulgogi alongside a variety of side dishes made the whole table feel much richer. Especially while traveling, feeling like you had a proper meal really matters, and with the main dish plus all the sides, it gave me that 'today I ate well' feeling. Personally, I really liked this kind of hearty meal setup.

Why it's a good pick for Sokcho breakfast

Bowl of sundubu served for breakfast

Picking a breakfast spot on a Sokcho trip isn't as easy as it sounds. Eating something too greasy first thing in the morning feels like a lot, but sticking to bread or something light just leaves you hungry again quickly while you're out traveling. That's probably why sundubu comes to mind when looking for a good Sokcho breakfast spot.

Warm sundubu with a bowl of rice

Eating warm sundubu with rice fills you up properly, and choosing the spicy version gives that nice feeling of a warm meal in the morning. For these reasons, Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu seems like a great fit for anyone looking for a breakfast spot during a Sokcho trip.

Even more convenient for family trips: parking and group seating

When traveling to Sokcho as a family, choosing a restaurant isn't just about the food — you end up checking parking and seating too. Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu has a spacious parking lot and group seating, making it convenient for family visits or larger groups.

If you're traveling by car, having plenty of parking space turns out to be a bigger perk than you'd expect. Especially when traveling with parents or kids, wasting time looking for parking in front of a restaurant can be exhausting, and having that part sorted out makes you feel more relaxed even before the meal starts.

A solid pick for Sokcho lunch too

Personally, when looking for a good Sokcho lunch spot, I tend to prefer places with a varied menu where you can eat a proper, filling meal. When traveling, you sightsee in the morning and get seriously hungry by lunchtime, and at that point having options like sundubu and bulgogi that go properly with rice really raises the satisfaction level.

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu offers everything from mild Chodang sundubu to spicy sundubu to bulgogi baekban, so it worked well for visiting with a group too. Worth keeping in mind as a meal spot if you're looking for a Sokcho restaurant.

Corn makgeolli rounds out the Sokcho travel mood

Corn makgeolli served with the meal

Can't forget the corn makgeolli (₩5,000) we ordered alongside the meal. Eating great food and soaking in the local vibe on a Sokcho trip — a drink like this is part of the fun of traveling. Paired with a hearty dish like bulgogi baekban especially, it made the whole meal feel much more relaxed. A great pairing to go with the food.

Sokcho really does have a huge range of good restaurants, but sometimes while traveling, what you end up craving is simply a warm, filling bowl of rice. Sundubu is a great choice for that — filling without feeling like too much. This time at Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu, I had the spicy sundubu together with the bulgogi baekban, and the combination of soft tofu with a fiery broth was great, and with the generous side dishes on top, it felt like a proper meal. If you're searching Sokcho Chodang sundubu, Sokcho sundubu village, Sokcho sundubu jjigae and trying to decide where to eat, it's worth comparing menus and giving this place a visit.

If you're craving a good bowl of sundubu in Sokcho, why not try a warm hot pot of spicy sundubu at Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu on your next trip? 🍲 If, like me, having a solid, filling meal matters while you travel, this should be a satisfying stop.
