The weather's been getting a little cooler lately and, weirdly, I've been craving hot soup. While debating what to have for lunch, I ended up at Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch in Seongpo-dong, Ansan. It's inside the Star Plaza building, so it wasn't hard to find at all, and I could use the building's parking lot, which made driving there easy. They said eating there also gets you 4 hours of parking registration, so I didn't have to stress about parking.

Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch: inside the Star Plaza basement

Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch is in the basement of the Star Plaza building in Seongpo-dong, Ansan. Once I got inside the building and found the restaurant, the interior looked pretty spacious from the entrance, with tables set up with plenty of room. There were other people eating when I visited, and overall it felt like a comfortable place to have a meal.

Looking further in, I saw it's billed as a seolleongtang & galbitang butcher's restaurant. The kitchen was open, so I could catch a glimpse of the food being prepared.

Menu and prices at Morakmorak Seolleongtang

Morakmorak's seolleongtang was ₩9,000, while the special seolleongtang and galbitang were around ₩14,000 each. Besides seolleongtang, there was also yukhoe bibimbap, hamburg steak, beef bulgogi and more, so people dining together could each pick something different, which seemed nice.

There was a separate butcher's menu too.

I didn't overthink it that day and went straight for the seolleongtang!

Side dishes and the self-serve bar

After ordering, the basic side dishes came out shortly after. Kimchi, kkakdugi, bracken fern, onion, chili peppers, and ssamjang (thick dipping sauce) were served together — a nice lineup to pair with seolleongtang.

And you can grab more of any side dish you're running low on at the self-serve bar.

Cutlery was also available at the self-serve bar, so you can just help yourself as needed. The kkakdugi was especially crunchy that day, which I loved — I figured I'd definitely eat it alongside the seolleongtang once it came out, haha.

What does the ₩9,000 seolleongtang broth taste like?

The ₩9,000 bowl of seolleongtang arrived piping hot in a stone pot. Yeah, this is exactly the kind of soup you want on a day like this, haha. Rice came with it too, topped with scallions, so just visually it already felt like a proper warm meal.

I tried a spoonful of the broth plain first, without adding anything. Rather than a milky, heavy style, it was cleaner-tasting than I expected. You could taste the deep flavor characteristic of ox bone broth, but without much of the greasy or heavy aftertaste, so it was easy to eat. According to the info posted in the restaurant, they use Korean beef ox bones and odd bones deboned directly at their butcher shop, simmer them for 3 days, then refrigerate and age the broth for 2 days to skim off the fat.

After tasting the broth on its own first, I added a bit of salt and pepper. That's the fun of seolleongtang — seasoning it to your own taste.

How much beef and noodles are in the bowl?

Looking inside the broth, there was more meat than I expected. When I picked some up with my chopsticks, it was tender rather than tough.

And of course, somyeon (thin wheat noodles) — a must in seolleongtang! There was a decent amount, good for slurping up along with the broth.

After eating the noodles and then the meat, I was already getting pretty full before I even mixed in the rice, haha.

Eating the seolleongtang with kimchi and kkakdugi

You've got to eat seolleongtang with kimchi or kkakdugi. I put a piece of the kimchi from the side dishes on top, and the crunchy texture went really well with the broth.

The meat was fine plain, but it was also tasty dipped lightly in the sauce.

Eating it piece by piece like that, before I knew it, it was time to mix in the rice.

Finishing the bowl by stirring in the rice

I added the rice into the seolleongtang broth.

With the rice mixed in, it looked even heartier. Eating the rice-in-broth with kimchi on the side really felt like a proper meal.

Considering it's ₩9,000, the portion was plenty for lunch, and with the hot broth and rice, it was pretty filling.

A clean, light bowl from start to finish

In the end, I ate almost the entire bowl of seolleongtang, haha.

Starting with the broth, then the noodles, then the meat, pairing it with kkakdugi, and finally mixing in the rice — I really finished off the whole bowl properly.

Is Morakmorak Seolleongtang a good lunch spot in Seongpo-dong, Ansan?

After trying the seolleongtang, I felt like this was overall a clean, filling place for a solid meal. The seolleongtang wasn't a big spend at ₩9,000, and with the meat and noodles included, I felt properly full afterward. It's a comfortable place to eat lunch alone or with family or coworkers. Above all, being able to use the building's parking lot, with 4 hours of parking registered just by eating there, was convenient for anyone driving. I had the seolleongtang this time, but looking at the menu, there's also galbitang and yukhoe bibimbap, so I'd like to try other dishes next time.

Final verdict on Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch

On days like these when you crave hot soup, a bowl of seolleongtang really hits the spot. The broth at Morakmorak wasn't too heavy, leaning clean, and with the meat and noodles included, it made for a solid meal. I'll keep this in mind as a good place to check out when looking for lunch in Seongpo-dong, Ansan, or craving something warm like seolleongtang or gukbap near Jungang Station. Next time I visit, I want to try the galbitang or other menu items I missed this time. :)
