A review of Dutumhoe, a sashimi spot in Jeju's Dongmun Market

Today I went to Dongmun Market near the Jeju airport to grab some sashimi takeout! I visited because the sashimi here is thicker-cut than other places and the coconut fried shrimp they sell alongside it is famous!

Dutumhoe menu and prices: coconut fried shrimp is the signature

Walk straight into Dongmun Market and you'll find Dutumhoe under a blue sign. They really do have so many kinds of sashimi and sushi! Sushi was mostly between ₩10,000-15,000 and sashimi between ₩20,000-25,000! Such good value❗️

And the other signature dish here is the coconut fried shrimp! Really plump, juicy shrimp, 8 pieces for ₩10,000.

The sashimi came in so many varieties too — assorted sashimi, mantis shrimp + salmon + flatfish, flatfish + salmon, and mantis shrimp alone — and the sushi options like salmon, flatfish, egg, futomaki, and mackerel sushi all looked so tempting.

Dongmun Market to Seongsan Ilchulbong: is sashimi still fine after 4-5 hours?

Dutumhoe packs everything so carefully, even into an ice box, so it seemed like there was nothing to worry about even for a long trip! I packed it up at Dongmun Market and ate it 4-5 hours later at Seongsan Ilchulbong, and the sashimi was still cool and fresh.

Flatfish and salmon sashimi, coconut shrimp and mackerel sushi: the takeout

I packed flatfish + salmon, coconut fried shrimp, and mackerel sushi.

It paired so well with the Jeju tangerine makgeolli (rice wine) sold at convenience stores as a side, and the mackerel sushi in particular had zero fishy taste — it was clean and delicious! I packed it to eat comfortably at the accommodation, but the lineup turned out to be more substantial than expected, so it made for a great meal during the Jeju trip.

The salmon sashimi was cut thick, so every bite had that proper soft, moist texture. It had that distinctive savory, clean flavor that just melts in your mouth — a satisfying pick if you love salmon! The flatfish sashimi had an appealing chewy, springy texture. It was clean and light, so switching between salmon and flatfish kept things interesting and I kept reaching for more.

And the mackerel sushi 🐟, which personally exceeded my expectations! You could really taste that deep, distinctive mackerel flavor, and eaten with the rice it felt savory and packed with umami. Eating it in Jeju somehow made it feel even more special.

I thought just the sashimi alone might feel a bit lacking, so I also ordered the coconut fried shrimp — and it was great! The batter was fried crisp, the shrimp inside was springy, and the subtle coconut sweetness made it a great thing to eat between bites of sashimi. 🦐

Why Dutumhoe is worth it for sashimi takeout on a Jeju trip

Overall, being able to enjoy sashimi, sushi, and fried food all in one go made for a great combination to take back and eat at the accommodation. If you're looking for a place near Dongmun Market to grab sashimi takeout while traveling Jeju, it's worth a visit at least once! I'd especially recommend it if you want to eat several different menu items in one sitting. 💛
