Jamsil octopus restaurant, date-night bossam platter: Muneo Cheonha

In short

Muneo Cheonha is an octopus restaurant in the Bangi-dong food alley in Songpa, Seoul, a five-minute walk from Mongchontoseong Station. On a weekend evening, the writer and her husband ordered the signature live octopus and bossam samhap platter (55,000 won) and were served complimentary griddled corn cheese and steamed egg; the poached live octopus was tender rather than chewy, and the boiled pork was moist with no gamey smell. Neither the seafood nor the meat fell short, so the price felt fair for what arrived.

Muneo Cheonha's signature live octopus-and-pork platter

Muneo Cheonha, an octopus specialist in the Bangi-dong food alley

My husband and I wanted somewhere clean and nice for a weekend evening drink with good side dishes, so we headed to 'Muneo Cheonha,' an octopus specialist in the Bangi-dong food alley. We usually love seafood-and-meat combos, so the samhap (three-way combo) menu that lets you enjoy octopus and boiled pork together caught my eye. From the free starters to the main dish, we left completely satisfied, so here's the full review for my neighbors ✨💛

Since it's tucked inside the Bangi-dong food alley, it's a great spot for a first round at Muneo Cheonha before heading out for round two ✌🏻

Walking in, the interior had a cozy, comfortable pub-like feel throughout. It looked like a great spot for small gatherings with friends or a work dinner, too 😊

Muneo Cheonha menu and prices

📖 Looking at the menu, there was a wide range of dishes built around octopus as the main ingredient. Besides the signature live octopus-and-pork platter, they also had a live octopus-and-duck platter, boiled live octopus, soy sauce shrimp, fried octopus, and a spicy octopus seafood ramen for a good finish. After some deliberation, we ordered the signature 'live octopus-and-pork platter (₩55,000)' 😄

Free with the meal: corn cheese and steamed egg

🧀 Before the main dish arrived, the complimentary side dishes were the first to hit the table with the basic spread. There was sizzling corn cheese on a hot griddle plate and steamed egg still steaming in its earthenware pot! The steamed egg was as jiggly as pudding 😋

Honest review of the live octopus and bossam samhap platter

🐙 The live octopus-and-pork platter came out neatly arranged on a large plate. Thin, moist slices of boiled pork belly, plump reddish boiled live octopus, plus white kimchi, aged kimchi, and seasoned dried radish on the side, all wrapped up with dipping sauces... It was seriously generous 😍

The full live octopus-and-pork platter on a large plate

Poached live octopus

The boiled live octopus had zero chewiness in a bad way — it was blanched so tender and soft. The more you chewed, the more the octopus's subtle sweetness and springy bite came through, and even a light dip in sesame oil sauce was fantastic 😋✨ The owner told us to dip it in sesame oil first and save the vinegar-chili sauce for later, which was clearly because the octopus was so fresh ❣️

Tender boiled live octopus

Boiled pork (suyuk)

The pork belly had a good ratio of lean meat to fat, boiled moist with no off smell — the texture was the best‼️

The samhap bite with aged kimchi

Lay a piece of aged white kimchi on a cabbage leaf, add a tender bite of pork belly and chewy boiled octopus, then top with spicy-sweet dried radish for one bite‼️ Need I say more? Hahaha, ridiculously good 😍

Who should eat at Muneo Cheonha?

Places that serve both seafood and meat often let the quality of one side slip, but Muneo Cheonha nailed both the tender octopus and the moist pork, making the price well worth it. If you're near Jamsil or the Bangi-dong food alley looking for a solid restaurant with neat, hearty side dishes for a drink, I highly recommend trying the live octopus-and-pork platter at 'Muneo Cheonha' 💛✨
