Kid-friendly tonkatsu near Chuncheon National Museum: Jeongseong Katsu

In short

Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Toegye Branch is a tonkatsu restaurant on Toegye-ro 93beon-gil in Chuncheon, Gangwon, an easy stop after visiting Chuncheon National Museum. The writer ordered the hangjeongsal katsu (pork jowl cutlet) set and the cold soba with hire katsu (pork fillet cutlet) set, and free parking in the Jeongseong Building underground lot, kids' chairs, aprons and a self-service bar made the visit with a child simple. Jeongseong Katsu stood out for its tender fillet katsu and the textbook seasoning of its cold soba.

Where do you park?

Parking space at Jeongseong Katsu, including the Jeongseong Building underground lot

You can park for free either on the street near the restaurant or in the Jeongseong Building underground lot. This neighborhood actually looked like it could be tricky for parking, but fortunately I could use the parking lot in the building where Jeongseong Katsu is located, so visiting by car wasn't a hassle at all~

Inside Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Toegye Branch

Interior of Jeongseong Katsu with two-seat and four-seat tables

The interior had a good mix of two-seat and four-seat tables. When I visited, there was a group of six who pushed the two-seat and four-seat tables together to make room. It seemed like it would work fine for larger groups too~

A corner of the restaurant with kids' chairs and aprons ready

There were also kids' chairs and aprons, so it looked comfortable for visiting with children or for anyone worried about splashes on their clothes~ If you're looking for a restaurant near Toegye-dong Humansia 1-cha that's good to visit with kids, I'd recommend Jeongseong Katsu~

What we ordered: pork jowl katsu set and cold soba with fillet katsu

Pork jowl katsu set and cold soba fillet katsu set laid out on the table

We ordered the pork jowl katsu set and the cold soba fillet katsu set!

A full spread of the pork jowl katsu set made with fried hangjeongsal

Hangjeongsal katsu, made with pork jowl

The pork jowl katsu is a fun way to try hangjeongsal (pork jowl) in tonkatsu form, so I ordered it once — the savory flavor and chewy texture unique to pork jowl made it a really appealing katsu.

Pork jowl katsu served with wasabi and salt

Eating it with the wasabi and salt that came with it made the savory flavor come through even more, and it was delicious haha

Fillet katsu set served with cold soba

The cold soba and hire katsu set

This is my pick, the cold soba fillet katsu set~ For reference, the difference between rosu katsu and hire katsu is the difference between loin and fillet — and I'm firmly on Team Fillet when it comes to tonkatsu haha

The fillet katsu set including refreshing cold soba

I was considering the fillet katsu set on its own, but since it was a bit warm out, I ordered the cold soba fillet katsu set, which comes with refreshing cold soba too!

Cold soba served with grated radish, chopped green onion, and wasabi on the side

The cold soba comes with grated radish, chopped green onion, and wasabi — thoughtfully served separately so you can add as much as you like! You're not supposed to dip all the noodles at once; just dip as much as you'll eat each time~

Cold soba at other restaurants has sometimes tasted a bit under-seasoned to me, but here it tasted exactly like what I think of as the 'textbook standard' for cold soba! Clean yet full of umami — I really enjoyed it.

A cross-section of the fillet katsu

The fillet katsu was easily the best part! The texture that seemed to melt in my mouth the moment I bit into it was really memorable.

A tender piece of fillet katsu made from pork tenderloin

It confirmed my belief that fillet is the way to go with tonkatsu — I really enjoyed it. If you're looking for a good tonkatsu restaurant in Toegye-dong, Jeongseong Katsu seems like the perfect fit!

The self-service bar for refilling side dishes

The self-service bar and a small detail that made us smile

There was also a self-service bar, so I could refill any side dish I wanted as much as I liked without hesitation. Above all, both the owner and the staff were really kind, which made the whole meal feel pleasant~

A paper cup printed with the words 'sturdy cup'

The words 'sturdy cup' printed on the paper cup were my little source of amusement haha. Some restaurants use flimsy paper cups, but this one really was a sturdy paper cup, and I liked that they paid attention to even this small detail b

The table at Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Toegye Branch after finishing the meal

We stopped by while visiting Chuncheon National Museum, and it turned out to be a satisfying tonkatsu restaurant that was more delicious than I expected! If you're looking for a good restaurant near Toegye-dong Humansia 1-cha, or one that's good to visit with kids, I strongly recommend Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Toegye Branch~
