Signature sotbap spread at Haenyeo Sotbap Suseong Direct Store

Today I had a delicious lunch with my mom, just the two of us, for the first time in a while. While looking for a good Korean restaurant near Suseong Lake, I landed on Haenyeo Sotbap Suseong Direct Store! I love sotbap (hot pot rice) to begin with, and it's the kind of menu that's not too heavy or intense, so it felt perfect to bring my mom along. I wanted to introduce this place to anyone searching for a good Korean restaurant near Suseong Lake in Daegu. 🤍

Parking and waiting at Haenyeo Sotbap: why 11:30 is the time to arrive

Haenyeo Sotbap Suseong Direct Store has underground parking below the building. I was worried it'd be cramped, but it goes down to B2, so it was actually pretty spacious.

Last time I came on a weekend the wait was insane, so today I timed it for the 11:30 opening. True to its reputation as a popular spot, there were quite a few people doing the same opening rush. Lots of gatherings of older folks especially!

What kind of restaurant is Haenyeo Sotbap Suseong Direct Store?

This is the inside of the restaurant, and there's another hall further back. Huge and clean, right? It'd be great for family gatherings haha. Before I get to the food, let me introduce the place itself.

As the name suggests, Haenyeo Sotbap centers its Korean menu around sotbap made with fresh seafood and seasonal ingredients. The moment I walked in, I noticed how spacious and clean it was. The tables are spaced generously too, which makes it great for family meals, and especially good for bringing parents or elders along. Personally, if a restaurant feels too cramped or chaotic I get a little tense eating there with my mom, but this place felt roomy and tidy overall, so I liked it. 😊

Spacious table with a kiosk for ordering

What we ordered: abalone sotbap and eel sotbap, 23,000 won each

The table is huge, right? With just my mom and me sitting there, it felt like a full-blown restaurant experience,,💙 Every table has its own kiosk, so we ordered right from our seat. Since it was just the two of us that day, we ordered abalone sotbap (₩23,000) and eel sotbap (₩23,000).

The banchan (side dishes) served first at Haenyeo Sotbap

The side dishes set out before the sotbap arrives — grilled Spanish mackerel and mushroom sweet-and-sour — each one felt clean and neatly done overall! My mom, who's a bit particular about seasoning, said everything was seasoned just right and really tasty. Eating alongside her, I could tell this is definitely a flavor that older folks would enjoy. It's not overly intense but not bland either — the kind of style where the ingredients' own flavor really comes through, so it'll come to mind when I'm looking for somewhere to eat with my parents.

Butter abalone with intestine sauce from the review event

Butter abalone from the review event

And this is the butter abalone we received through a review event — wow, it was so moist and tender. There was zero chewiness to the texture, and the sauce made from abalone intestines was absolutely incredible. I mixed it right into the sotbap. 😂 No bitterness at all, no fishy taste either — weirdly perfect. In short: an instant favorite. ✨

How the eel sotbap and abalone sotbap tasted

And now, today's star, sotbap,,💙 The eel sotbap I ordered! Doesn't it look gorgeous, ㅠㅠ

Lid removed from the eel sotbap

Scooped it out neatly and got ready for the sungnyung (scorched rice tea) too.

Take a look at my mom's abalone sotbap too,, I stole a few bites and it was so good.

Table setting with seaweed soup and sungnyung

We had seaweed soup too, wrapped some in gim (dried seaweed), and neatly finished off the sungnyung too,, felt so spoiled with such a feast in front of us. My mom kept saying it was delicious over and over 😆 I was so glad I brought her. Last time I came with my husband, and he loves the eel rice bowl here too💙

Refilled acorn jelly and seasoned cucumber

Free banchan refills and the pomegranate smoothie for dessert

The acorn jelly and cucumber here are so good that, yes, I refilled them,, and the staff were so kind too. Whenever a side dish looked low they'd come over and ask if we wanted more, ㅎㅎㅎ And do you know what the real highlight at the end is?

Pomegranate smoothie and Americano enjoyed as palate cleansers

The pomegranate flavor was so refreshing and perfect for cleansing the palate — I think I'll have it every time I come. My mom went for a hot Americano instead, cheers~~

A healthy Korean lunch when you want something gentler

These days, even more than something delicious, I gravitate toward food that doesn't sit heavy afterward. In that sense, Haenyeo Sotbap's combination of fresh ingredients, warm sotbap, and neat banchan made for a meal that felt hearty but still clean. Above all, every dish seemed to bring out the ingredients' own natural flavor as much as possible, which I loved. Chatting with my mom over a slow meal ended up making the whole thing an even more pleasant time together 💕
