Daegu Korean restaurant, spicy pork for two plus bibimbap: Banwoldang

In short

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is a 36-year-old fire-grilled Korean restaurant on Beomeocheon-ro in Suseong, Daegu. The order was the stone-plate fire-grilled jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) for two in the spicy version plus a buja bibimbap (mixed rice bowl) add-on, which came with a free cheonggukjang doenjang stew (rich fermented soybean paste stew) for parties of two or more and three refills at the ssam vegetable self-bar. Between the smoky aged pork, the bibimbap and the stew, Banwoldang Buja Sikdang makes a filling one-plate Korean meal.

I've been craving Korean food lately, so I went out for some smoky jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork).

Inside Banwoldang Buja Sikdang: atmosphere and seating

The kitchen at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch has a transparent glass window so you can peek at the cooking as it happens.

Overall, it had a clean, comfortable atmosphere that was great for a relaxed meal. Most tables are two-seaters, so it seemed like a nice spot for a cozy meal for two.

Further inside, there was a bit more spacious area. There were also seats for larger groups, so it looked good for family outings or gatherings.

Jeyuk bokkeum with makgeolli (rice wine)... I really wanted that combo. There's also a baby chair prepared.

Menu lineup and the new spicy cream pork

On one side, next to the coffee vending machine, I spotted rice sacks, which suggested they use good-quality rice. As a new menu item, there was spicy cream pork, a spicy-yet-creamy combo that seemed aimed at younger customers. It's limited to 20 servings a day, so give it a try haha.

Besides pork, there was also seokgalbi (stone-grilled ribs), which is good to eat with a baby, and spicy stir-fried squid, so there's something for every taste.

There was also a separate takeout menu, and it seemed to be sold a bit cheaper than eating in the hall.

The ssam vegetable self-bar and side dishes

The self-bar at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch has fresh lettuce, garlic, cheongyang chili peppers, and ssamjang (dipping sauce), so you can eat as much as you like without holding back.

Sweet burdock fritter side dish

There were bean sprouts, radish salad, seaweed stem, and burdock fritters, which were slightly sweet and I kept reaching for them. The burdock's distinctive smell and flavor weren't strong, so even people who don't usually like burdock probably wouldn't even notice it was burdock.

Stone-plate fire-grilled pork for two with a buja bibimbap add-on

We ordered the stone-plate fire-grilled jeyuk bokkeum for two, added buja bibimbap, plus the free cheonggukjang doenjang stew.

It came out sizzling on the stone plate, and the visual was so good...

They stir-fry the pork with plenty of wok hei (fire-charred aroma) in the kitchen.

Well-seasoned aged fire-grilled pork

Maybe because they use aged pork, the seasoning was really well soaked into the meat. There was a subtle smoky aroma too, and since the meat is on the thinner side, the seasoning didn't just sit on top but seeped all the way through.

I already love ssam (wrapped lettuce bites), but since the vegetables come in fresh from the market every day, I ended up refilling three times.

What is the buja bibimbap like?

Namul (seasoned vegetables) made fresh every morning, beef garnish, egg jidan (egg strips), and fragrant sesame oil!! An unbeatable combo.

When you order the bibimbap, they also give you the seasoning sauce.

Once you mix it up well, a bite of smoky pork plus bibimbap goes really well together.

The free cheonggukjang doenjang stew

The cheonggukjang doenjang stew that came with the meal had a savory smell wafting up as well.

A bowl of savory cheonggukjang doenjang stew

The distinctive savory funk of cheonggukjang combined with the salty flavor of doenjang, and it was delicious whether you spooned a little broth over rice or ate it alongside the pork.

Order two or more servings and you get the cheonggukjang doenjang stew included, making for a hearty, filling meal.

If you're looking for a great Korean restaurant in Daegu, or a lunch spot for office workers near Suseong-gu or Beomeo-dong, this place seems like the best.
