Suwon Korean BBQ with skillet fried rice: Taejang Sikdang

In short

Taejang Sikdang Suwon Station Branch is a Korean barbecue restaurant near Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. We grilled three portions of 4 mm frozen pork belly with kimchi and bean sprouts, added one more portion, then finished with skillet fried rice. Verdict: a friendly, retro spot for a satisfyingly full pork belly meal.

Step inside and every neatly maintained retro-style light and prop is arranged with such charm. Songs from that era(?) kept playing, and the uncles at the next table were singing up a storm, hahaha. Even I, born in the 1990s, knew a few of them, so we were like, karaoke for round two, goooo? That’s how we played around ^^,, Drinking gatherings are fun every single day,,^^,,,

The 4 mm frozen pork belly and 6 mm fresh pork belly menu

Taejang Sikdang’s signature dishes are 4 mm frozen pork belly and 6 mm fresh pork belly. Almost every table was having the frozen pork belly! It cooks quickly, and while frozen pork belly at other places can turn tough easily, Taejang Sikdang’s stayed tender even as time passed ✨

Taejang Sikdang’s main attraction! Rich, high-quality frozen pork belly! Retro frozen pork belly has become trendy again lately, so I ordered the signature dish with high expectations. Not long after ordering, a huge silver tray arrived neatly filled with side dishes. It had been so long since I’d seen a silver tray, haha.

The complimentary side dishes filling the tray

The basic spread included fresh ssam vegetables (lettuce and perilla leaves), crunchy seasoned scallions, well-fermented napa cabbage kimchi, bracken fern, seasoned bean sprouts, garlic and chili peppers, a house sauce and sesame oil dip, plus doenjang and ssamjang soybean-paste sauces. I loved that they gave us plenty of kimchi and bean sprouts, which are the perfect match when grilled alongside the meat.

Midway through the meal, the bracken fern was so good that I asked for more. The owner cheerfully said, “My wife seasoned it this morning, so it’ll be even tastier~,” and that added another spoonful of sweetness,,😌💕 Every side dish was perfectly seasoned and fresh, whetting my appetite before the main meat even arrived.

Grilling quick-cooking frozen pork belly with kimchi and bean sprouts

Three portions of 4 mm frozen pork belly, please!! A staff member grilled the first few pieces and explained how to cook and enjoy them best, then we grilled the rest ourselves!!

Onto the preheated grill went the frozen pork belly >< The biggest advantage of frozen pork belly is that you can grill and eat it quickly without a long wait. Once the meat was turning nicely golden, we put napa cabbage kimchi, bean sprouts, and garlic around the lower edge of the grill.

The rich fat from the meat made the kimchi and bean sprouts sizzle golden too, doubling the delicious aroma~~ After sprinkling on a little pepper to get rid of any meaty smell(?), we piled up the beautifully cooked meat and dug in at full speed.

It had been a while since I’d had frozen pork belly, and it cooked quickly; the gas burner had great heat too, so we ate really well. Along with the upbeat songs and the kind service from the staff~~

Finishing with skillet fried rice

After the frozen pork belly, we couldn’t possibly skip the essential finish: skillet fried rice. We ended the meal completely stuffed. Even though the restaurant was packed and incredibly busy, every staff member served us kindly with a smile.

There were lots of younger diners too, but many older office workers seemed to be having alumni reunions? Or company dinners. We’re officially regulars from now on 🤩 If you love frozen pork belly, definitely visit Taejang Sikdang near Suwon Station, haha.
