Dongin-dong Korean restaurant for bossam set meals: Uldong Bossam

In short

Uldong Bossam is a Korean restaurant on Gyeongsang gamyeong-gil in Dongin-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu. I visited with my boyfriend and ordered two large-meat bossam sets plus potato pancake; the two pork cuts, stew, side dishes, and generous portions made for a filling dinner, though we left some behind.

Where is Uldong Bossam, and is parking available?

I visited Uldong Bossam (울동보쌈) in Dongin-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, with my boyfriend on a weekend evening. The address is 279 Gyeongsang gamyeong-gil, 1st floor, and the distance listed in the original guide is 785 m from Chilseong Market Station Exit 3. There is no parking at the restaurant, so visitors need to use a nearby public parking lot.

The hours listed at the time of my visit were 11:00–23:00. The break was from 15:00–16:30, and last order was at 21:30.

Even in the evening, the sign stood out from a distance, and the exterior had a clean look.

What were the atmosphere and seating like?

As soon as I entered, I saw a variety of whiskies and maesil tea, a plum tea served for dessert.

I heard it had recently opened, and the interior was also clean when I visited.

There were cozy room-style tables toward the back. Oriental-style framed artwork gave the space a traditional feel.

How much were the bossam set meal and potato pancake?

Each table had a table-order system, which made ordering convenient. Besides the bossam set, the menu included potato pancake, minari pancake, and boiled-pork hot pot. There were also various alcoholic drinks and whiskies.

We each ordered a bossam set and added a potato pancake. These were the items and prices we ordered during the visit:

  • Bossam set, large-meat option: ₩12,900 × 2
  • Potato pancake: ₩9,000

What came with the bossam set, and how did the two cuts taste?

Once a set arrived for each of us, it looked filling enough for dinner.

The bossam came in two cuts: gabrisal, pork shoulder blade, and samgyeopsal, pork belly. Stew and side dishes were served alongside them, making the set feel generous.

The owner showed us how to crush the sesame seeds served with the meal, mix them with soy sauce, and dip the bossam in it. This added a nutty flavor.

Both cuts were tender, but their flavors and textures were slightly different.

I liked how the samgyeopsal bossam brought together the characteristic flavor of pork belly and its fat.

The moist, soft gabrisal suited my taste better. It was good on its own, with bossam radish kimchi, or with the sesame soy sauce.

Was the accompanying stew very spicy?

The stew tasted like a combination of doenjang-jjigae and sundubu-jjigae. It contained beef brisket, tofu, and zucchini, among other ingredients. It was hot and peppery, but not very spicy to me. My boyfriend ate it with a bowl of rice.

How much food was there, and what was the potato pancake like?

The potato pancake was large. Since we each ate a bossam set and shared the pancake, there was more than we could finish, so we left a little.

The potato pancake was thin and crisp. They could sprinkle cheese on it if requested, and the cheese went well with the crispy pancake. Soy sauce and ketchup were also served for dipping, depending on your preference.

The sesame soy sauce served with the bossam was also good with the potato pancake.

What kind of meal or gathering would suit this restaurant?

We went for dinner for two, and I was satisfied with the value: for ₩12,900, each set included two cuts of bossam, stew, and side dishes. Since it comes as a complete set, I also felt it could work for an office-worker lunch.

With room-style tables, pancakes, boiled-pork hot pot, alcohol, and whisky, it also seemed suitable for a group dinner or drinks gathering.
