I visited Uldong Bossam (울동보쌈) near Daegu City Hall’s Dongin Building because I wanted to eat bossam with a variety of side dishes. We ordered Uldong Bossam and a potato pancake. The combination of moist pork and a crisp potato pancake, eaten alternately, stayed with me.
Where is Uldong Bossam, and when is it open?
Uldong Bossam is on the first floor at 279 Gyeongsanggamyeong-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu. It is in the Dongin-dong area near Daegu City Hall’s Dongin Building, so I thought it would be convenient for lunch if you work nearby. The hours listed in the original are 11:00–23:00, with a break from 15:00–16:30.
What is the restaurant atmosphere like?
This restaurant serves a home-style Korean meal with several dishes, making its bossam and side dishes in-house and preparing seasonal banchan (side dishes). The atmosphere felt bright and clean, like a straightforward Korean restaurant.
The exterior was a red-brick building with the restaurant name displayed in large letters. It was neat without being overly decorated, and it also had the comfortable feeling of a neighborhood restaurant.
Inside, wood-toned tables and chairs created a warm, calm setting. It was not overly formal, so it felt easy to sit down and eat comfortably.
Is it suitable for eating bossam alone?
The tables were not cramped, and there were seats suited to one or two people. Since there is a one-person bossam set, I felt it would be less intimidating for a solo lunch.
Each table had an ordering device, so we could look through the menu and order right away. We chose Uldong Bossam to share, but if I visited alone, the bossam set would probably catch my eye.
How much are the bossam and side dishes?
When I visited, the bossam set was ₩10,900, and the set with extra meat was ₩12,900. It comes with rice, soup, and side dishes alongside the bossam, so it looked suitable for a lunch meal.
The shareable Uldong Bossam cost ₩29,000 for small, ₩39,000 for medium, and ₩49,000 for large. The potato pancake and minari pancake were ₩9,000 each, and the boiled pork hot pot was ₩35,000.
The menu seemed suited to having a bossam set for lunch, or ordering bossam or boiled pork hot pot with a pancake and having a drink in the evening. We added a potato pancake to our Uldong Bossam.
What side dishes come with Uldong Bossam, and how does it taste?
When the food arrived, I noticed that more dishes had been set out than I expected.
The table filled out with bossam, kimchi, minari, ssam vegetables, various side dishes, and even a bubbling stew.
The pork was sliced to a moderate thickness, giving it a satisfying chew. Because lean meat and fat were attached together, it was moist rather than dry. I did not notice any unpleasant pork smell when I ate it.
I tried it with kimchi, then added minari and bean sprouts, and also wrapped it in ssam vegetables. The flavor changed depending on the side dish, which made it enjoyable to alternate between combinations.
Hangjeongsal (pork jowl) also came with the order, and it was a nice special bite to have between pieces of bossam.
I also remembered the way we ground sesame seeds ourselves and ate them with soy sauce. They added a nutty flavor that felt different from saeujeot (salted shrimp) or ssamjang. Changing between the side dishes and sauces kept the meal from becoming tiring.
With rice and doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), I felt I had eaten a filling Korean meal.
Did the cheese-topped potato pancake pair well with bossam?
I ordered the potato pancake to have with the bossam. It arrived as a wide, pan-fried pancake topped with grated cheese. The menu information said they would grate as much cheese as desired.
The edges were crisp, while the inside retained the moist texture distinctive of potatoes. The cheese added a nutty, slightly salty flavor, and it tasted better while warm. Since the moist bossam and crisp potato pancake had different textures, I felt ordering both was a good choice.
What would I order on a return visit?
This time, I liked the combination of bossam with kimchi and minari, along with the potato pancake. If you visit with at least one other person, sharing like we did would work well. If I went for lunch alone, I would choose the bossam set.
If I return, I would like to order the minari pancake or boiled pork hot pot, which I did not try this time, along with the bossam.
