Daegu Korean restaurant for bossam and potato pancake: Uldong Bossam

I went to Uldong Bossam (울동보쌈) in Gyodong, Daegu, for lunch with my child. I had noticed the space on social media because it looked like a café, then learned it was a bossam restaurant and decided to visit. We ordered Uldong Bossam and a potato pancake to share.

Where can you park if you drive?

It was difficult to find a place to park around Daegu City Hall and the alleys of Gyodong, so we used the public parking lot in front of City Hall. It was about a one-minute walk to the restaurant, and we walked there chatting with our child.

What was the restaurant like for dining with a child?

The entrance combined red brick, clear glass, and wood-like materials. Inside, traditional Korean decorative items were placed among white and wood tones, creating a calm overall atmosphere.

A chilled maesil-cha (plum tea) was available near the entrance, and whiskey bottles were displayed under the lights. For us, visiting with a child, the clean, well-maintained high chair was especially useful. It helped us settle in comfortably.

What did we choose for lunch?

The menu included bossam set meals, individual bossam, pancakes, and side dishes. We chose Uldong Bossam and a potato pancake.

The side dishes arrived not long after we ordered. The lettuce and perilla leaves were fresh, with no wilted parts, and the banchan (side dishes) were neatly arranged.

It was fun to make the dipping sauce by grinding sesame seeds and mixing them with a special soy sauce. A savory aroma rose as we ground the seeds, and my child carefully tried grinding them too. It kept my child entertained while we waited for the food.

How were the bossam’s texture and accompaniments?

The warm bossam had a tender, juicy texture from the combination of lean meat and fat. Adding a little raw onion brought out more sweetness and reduced the richness. My husband enjoyed it too.

We also made wraps with a perilla leaf, a thick slice of meat, and spicy-sweet musaengchae (shredded radish salad). I did not notice any unpleasant pork smell, and the crisp radish salad went well with the meat’s savory richness.

How did the potato pancake pair with the bossam?

When the potato pancake arrived, a staff member grated snowflake cheese over it at the table. The potatoes were not grated; they were cut into very thin strips and pan-fried, making the outside crisp and the inside moist.

My child dipped the potato pancake into the sesame soy sauce we made with the ground sesame seeds. The salty soy sauce, nutty sesame, and rich cheese worked well together. With the sauce, it tasted less greasy to me, so I kept reaching for another piece.

Was it satisfying for a family lunch?

My child ate the tender bossam and nutty potato pancake well. After giving it a thumbs-up, my child finished a whole bowl of rice independently.

After we finished eating, I looked around and noticed jars and traditional decorative items placed throughout the restaurant. It was not busy when we visited, so it was easy for our family to eat while talking quietly. This time I came with my child during the day, but next time I would like to come with my husband in the evening for a drink.
