Bangi-dong bar for daechang hot pot with garlic scapes: Horanggul

In short

Horanggul Bangi Branch is a bar in the Bangi-dong dining alley in Songpa, Seoul, specialising in hot pot with beef gopchang (small intestine) and daechang (large intestine). Diners set a 10-minute timer, eat the tofu skin and vegetables first and then the intestines, dipping them in yuzu soy sauce with garlic scapes on the side, then leave half the broth to finish with egg risotto. Horanggul Bangi Branch suits an evening gathering or a Songridan-gil date meal for anyone who wants beef intestines served a different way.

Beef gopchang and daechang hot pot spread at Horanggul Bangi Branch

Why Horanggul Bangi Branch in the Bangi-dong dining alley?

If you search around the Bangi-dong dining alley there's everything from grilled meat spots to izakayas, but this time we decided to try something a bit different: a hot pot with beef gopchang (beef intestine) and daechang (beef large intestine)!

The vibe is relaxed and the menu is generous, so it works well for a proper dinner or for pairing with a few drinks!

Beef gopchang and daechang hot pot: the 10-minute timer eating order

We ordered the beef gopchang and daechang hot pot! It's not a dig-in-right-away dish — the staff handed us a timer. They explained you simmer it for about 10 minutes, then eat in order, so even first-timers could follow along easily.

By the way, these garlic scapes are a total kick .. 🤍

First you set the 10-minute timer and let it boil. The pot has tofu skin and various vegetables inside, so the broth got richer and richer as it simmered. Once the timer's up, you eat the tofu skin and vegetables first — not straight into the gopchang or daechang. Then you simmer for another 2-3 minutes before eating the meat, daechang, and gopchang.

Having a set eating order like this also seems to keep the gopchang and daechang from getting overcooked and chewy!

Daechang dipped in yuzu soy sauce: does it cut the richness?

The yuzu soy sauce served alongside was a real highlight too. The gopchang and daechang are tasty on their own, but dipping them lightly into the yuzu soy sauce adds a subtle citrusy note that cuts the richness and pairs really well. It especially suited the daechang, which has a nutty, oily richness — the bright yuzu flavor matched it nicely.

Egg risotto: save half the broth first

After working through the hot pot for a while, we also ordered the egg risotto! This was personally one of the most memorable dishes of the night — since it's made using the leftover hot pot broth, all the flavor we'd been eating carried straight through.

For the egg risotto, you shouldn't leave too much broth behind — it's best made once the broth is down to about half. Worth keeping in mind when you order haha.

Once the risotto was ready we ate it with the garlic scapes that had been sitting alongside — the crunchy texture and slightly tangy flavor of the garlic scapes went surprisingly well with it. The savory, rich hot pot broth combined with the soft egg, and the garlic scapes kept cutting through with a bit of brightness in between, so I kept going back for more.

Is Horanggul good for a group dinner or a Songridan-gil date?

At first I thought a hot pot with beef gopchang and daechang might feel a bit heavy, but with sides like the yuzu soy sauce and garlic scapes, you could mix it up in a lot of different combinations, which I liked.

Overall, having a set process for how the food arrives and how you eat it made for a nice, slow-paced conversation meal, and it also worked well as one shared pot for a group. So it seems like a good fit for anyone looking for a Bangi-dong spot for a work dinner, or for catching up with friends over dinner.

If you're planning a date around Bangi-dong toward Seokchon Lake or Songridan-gil, this is worth considering as a meal spot too. It's a bit different from the Japanese food people usually think of for a Songridan-gil date — a warm hot pot that made for a comfortable atmosphere to talk over. And if you're someone who loves beef gopchang and daechang, being able to enjoy everything from the hot pot to the risotto in one sitting is even more satisfying!!

If you're looking for somewhere in Bangi-dong to eat well with a drink, or want to try gopchang and daechang in a different way, it's worth trying the beef gopchang and daechang hot pot at Horanggul Bangi Branch.

Kakao Map review event signage

They said leaving a Kakao Map review gets you a free Tico drink, so it's worth taking part!! We forgot to do it, so unfortunately we missed out haha.
