Bongcheon pollock restaurant with Shin Ramyun spice: Sangdo Neulbori

In short

Sangdo Neulbori Bongcheon Station Branch is a braised pollock (kodari) and baby octopus restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 5 of Bongcheon Station in Gwanak, Seoul. Over an evening visit with her mother, the writer ordered siraegi kodari (braised pollock with dried radish greens) for two plus barley bibimbap, and found the heat about as strong as Shin Ramyun, with thick, plump pollock. The best bite was barley rice, pollock and siraegi wrapped in dried gim (seaweed), and the self-serve sungnyung (scorched rice tea) bar and self-mix bibimbap corner made an extra bowl of rice hard to resist.

The first thing I loved was the excellent accessibility. Walk out of Bongcheon Station Exit 5, go about three minutes, and the place is right there in plain sight — even people with a poor sense of direction can find it easily. 🫢 It's really close to the station, so it's great for people getting around by public transit or meeting up in a group.

Inside Sangdo Neulbori: a wide hall with well-spaced tables

The first impression the moment I stepped inside was, wow, this place is way bigger than I expected! The tables are also spaced out generously, making it an ideal spot for office worker group dinners, family outings, or all kinds of club gatherings nearby.

Overall, it's spotlessly clean with a bright atmosphere, making it a great restaurant near Bongcheon Station to bring your parents to.

Menu board listing braised pollock and baby octopus dishes

Along with the spicy-sweet braised pollock near Bongcheon Station, they also sell springy baby octopus as a signature dish! After some deliberation, my mom and I ordered the siraegi kodari (braised pollock loaded with dried radish greens) for two, plus barley bibimbap.

💡 Small tip: the weekday lunch special

Oh! They also sell a great-value lunch special separately. If you come for lunch on a weekday, you can enjoy the delicious braised pollock or stir-fried baby octopus at a much more reasonable price, so keep this in mind if you work nearby or are planning a lunch gathering! 👏

Side dishes: steamed egg and doenjang jjigae come standard

Not long after we ordered, a full spread of tidy side dishes was set out. Usually when the main dish is great, the side dishes can be lacking, but here even the basics were generously plated. 🫢🫢

Warm, soft steamed egg and savory doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) came as standard, which was great for warming up the stomach before diving into the pollock. Each side dish was seasoned lightly and cleanly. 👍👍

How spicy is the siraegi kodari? About like Shin Ramyun

Finally, the star of today's meal appears — siraegi kodari!! The color of the sauce is a mouth-watering red. Tasting it, it was a little spicier than I expected.

The spice level felt about like Shin Ramyun! 🌶️ It wasn't an artificially aggressive capsaicin heat, but a deliciously sharp, addictive savory sauce that clung to my mouth and kept pulling me back for more.

Close-up of plump, flaky pollock flesh

Above all, true to being a great kodari restaurant near Bongcheon Station, the pollock itself was loaded with plump flesh! Just a light lift with the chopsticks and a thick, moist chunk of flesh flaked right off — the texture when chewing was excellent.

And the real star of this place was actually the siraegi (dried radish greens)! With a chewy yet tender texture, the spicy-sweet sauce soaked deep into the greens, and eating them together with the pollock flesh created an explosion of umami. A true delicacy!!

Toss the barley bibimbap we ordered together with the seasoned vegetables to your taste, then top with some pollock sauce for double the nutty flavor, hahaha.

👏 Bbonyo's favourite combo: pollock and siraegi wrapped in gim

A gim wrap filled with barley rice, pollock flesh and siraegi

Put a spoonful of nutty barley rice on a sheet of dried gim (seaweed), top with a plump chunk of pollock and sauce-soaked siraegi, and pop it in your mouth in one bite! You'll truly experience heaven on earth. 🤤 (Not telling you I ordered an extra bowl of rice for this... haha)

The sungnyung self-serve bar and mix-your-own bibimbap corner

And the real killer feature unique to Sangdo Neulbori Bongcheon Station Branch is the self-serve bar!

The self-serve bar has warm, nutty sungnyung (scorched rice tea) ready to go, and sipping it between bites of the spicy pollock really cleansed the heat cleanly.

Self-mix bibimbap corner with sesame oil and seasoning sauce

On top of that, there's a fully-equipped self-mix bibimbap corner with sesame oil and seasoning sauce laid out... so in the end I couldn't resist and added an extra bowl of rice, mixing it thoroughly into the leftover pollock sauce, hahaha. I genuinely ate until I was about to burst! 👍
