Once the breeze turns cool, I find myself craving that outdoor grilling-and-soju feeling. A few days ago, my friend and I went looking for a good BBQ spot near Bangwha Station with both atmosphere and quality meat after work, and found the one place with outdoor terrace seating. I fell for the combination of fragrant minari and nicely charred meat — here's my honest review of Hwapyeongjip, a BBQ restaurant in Bangwha-dong.

Hwapyeongjip is located at 1F 114-115, Bangwha Charmant 1 Officetel, 7 Banghwadaero 47ga-gil, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Free parking is available in the building.

How to get there: exit Line 5 Bangwha Station at Exit 2, turn left along the ticket gates and go straight — you'll spot the restaurant on the right, lit up with string lights.

Do you need a reservation for the Hwapyeongjip terrace?

Hwapyeongjip's outdoor terrace has about 4 tables set up, giving off a camping-or-picnic kind of vibe in cool weather. When we visited, the terrace was already full. If you want to enjoy the terrace atmosphere, I'd recommend booking ahead.

• Seat requests and groups: if you want a specific table or you're coming as a group of 8 or more, calling the restaurant directly gets you friendly guidance.

What the inside of Hwapyeongjip looks like

Inside, there are neatly arranged round tables and about 8 comfortable sofa tables. Overall it's clean and pleasant, a good place to eat without feeling cramped.

What comes in the Hwapyeong Set for Two (49,500 won)

We went for the great-value Hwapyeong Set for Two. The set (₩49,500) includes pork belly & pork neck 500g + minari + doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) + your choice of truffle scallop risotto or naengmyeon (cold noodles).

Once you order, the basic side dishes are set out on a tidy retro metal tray. Then come three thick, hearty chunks of domestic pork belly and pork neck.

We didn't sit on the terrace, but we got a round table right in front of the outdoor seating area! The open, airy feel made this a great spot too — recommended!

Minari pork belly: what happens when you grill the greens on the plate

Laying minari lightly on top of the golden-browned meat on the grill plate really brings out its fragrance. The rich meat juices paired with the fresh minari cut through the greasiness, so we never got tired of it — kept going back for more. The fresh, distinct flavor of minari pork belly is the best!! Next time, I'm definitely ordering extra minari (₩5,000)!

The doenjang stew included in the set

A classic BBQ-restaurant doenjang stew!!! The stew included in the set was savory, packed with tofu and onions that helped cut the richness of the meat — I bet it'd also be great turned into doenjang bokkeumbap with a bowl of rice added in!

Choosing the truffle scallop risotto as the set side

After some deliberation, we went with the risotto for our side dish, since it's a specialty unique to this place. I worried a creamy risotto alongside pork belly might feel too heavy, but it turned out savory and had a nice chewy bite from the scallops. It paired well with the soju we had alongside it, and we cleared the bowl down to the very last spoonful.

Hwapyeongjip stands out as a rare Bangwha-dong BBQ spot that pairs quality meat with atmospheric outdoor terrace seating. It's close to nearby spots like Bangwha Neighborhood Park and the Gaehwasan trail, making it a nice stop for a weekend outing or after a walk. It's also close to Magok District and Gimpo Airport, making it perfect for an after-work gathering!
