I thought I'd been to pretty much every dessert spot near Balsan Station, but somehow I kept putting off Byway Bakers even though I knew it existed. The shop's a bit spacious, so it felt more like a place to go with a friend than to grab takeout alone, and it's also in the opposite direction from where I usually walk, so I needed to really plan a trip there. It's less than a 10-minute walk from Balsan Station. The entrance doesn't face the main road but the opposite side, so if it's your first visit, it's worth checking the exact spot beforehand.

Salty financier vs fig financier: how do they taste?

There wasn't really a plain basic flavor, so I went with salty and fig. The salty one had a crackly texture I hadn't felt in a long time.

It even felt fairly firm when I cut it with the knife they gave me — the crust was on the thicker side, giving both a crackly and chewy texture together, while the inside felt dense throughout. The sweetness leaned more toward caramel, so pairing it with coffee when it got a bit too sweet worked perfectly. The fig one had figs piled generously on top — usually fig financiers have a lot of cream cheese and end up closer to a pound cake, but

here it was just figs cleanly on top, keeping that distinct financier feel, which I liked. I started cutting it with the knife but ended up finishing with a fork haha. There were bits of fig inside too.

The egg tart seemed freshly made — it was still a little warm. The pastry was just the right thickness, and the egg custard was so soft and smooth there was no eggy smell, just good texture. This was on the sweeter side too.

With such a wide variety of financiers, this is the kind of place that makes you want to try one of each. Between the cozy solo-friendly seating and all the office workers dropping by, it seems like a solid spot near Balsan Station for dessert or snack bread. Grabbing one or two financiers for an afternoon snack would be perfect. Next time I'll have to try the salt bread too.
