Gwangmyeong charcoal grill restaurant: three pork cuts at Sammokjip

In short

Sammokjip Gwangmyeong Sageori Station Branch is a charcoal-fired Korean BBQ restaurant in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi, with its original location at Cheolsan Station. The order was one serving each of Samok whole-scallion galmaegisal (pork skirt meat), Samok teukmoksal (premium pork neck) and Samok tonghangjeongsal (whole pork jowl), plus pork kimchi stew, with staff grilling everything at the table — and of the three, the tonghangjeongsal was the best. Sammokjip is a 2-minute walk from Gwangmyeong Sageori Station and a good pick when you want to compare three cuts in one sitting.

A great new meat restaurant just opened! I visited Sammokjip's Gwangmyeong Sageori branch! The main location is at Cheolsan Station, but now there's one at Gwangmyeong Sageori Station too! Since they specialize in charcoal-grilled meat, I was really looking forward to that smoky charcoal flavor!!!><

What is the restaurant like inside?

The inside of Sammokjip Gwangmyeong Sageori Station Branch was clean and comfortable. On this day especially, the door was left open, so we got to grill meat while enjoying a cool breeze — it really suited the mood of charcoal grilling!

Eating in this kind of setting felt like being outdoors, way better than a stuffy, closed-off BBQ place!!!

The three signature cuts on Sammokjip's menu

Table set with Sammokjip's signature whole-scallion galmaegisal

Sammokjip's signature dish! It's the samok whole-scallion galmaegisal (skirt meat)! We ordered one serving each of samok whole-scallion galmaegisal, samok teukmoksal (premium pork neck), and samok tonghangjeongsal (whole pork jowl), plus a pork kimchi stew and rice to finish the order!!

Charcoal placed on the grill along with kimchi and fermented anchovy sauce

When we ordered the meat, they first brought out the charcoal, and the quality of the charcoal looked really good! They also placed kimchi and fermented anchovy sauce on top of it! Since the charcoal was properly heated, the heat was seriously intense!

Banchan spread of wild garlic leaves, aged kimchi, lettuce, and sauces

The banchan (side dishes) included wild garlic leaves, aged kimchi, lettuce, and a variety of sauces. It was a great lineup to pair with the meat, so we could mix and match according to taste, and since it's a self-serve bar, we could help ourselves as much as we wanted.

Samok whole-scallion galmaegisal (pork skirt meat)

As soon as the meat went on the grill, the sizzling sound had me drooling. Sure enough, the samok whole-scallion galmaegisal came with the skirt meat rolled around a whole scallion! Wow, this looked so good!!

Galmaegisal rolled around a whole scallion

Best of all, the staff grilled the meat themselves and cut it into bite-sized pieces for us, so we could eat comfortably.

The taste of grilling scallion and galmaegisal together over charcoal...! As the scallion turns golden brown, it develops a savory, subtle sweetness, and combined with the nutty, chewy galmaegisal, it's truly a killer combo..!!!!

Golden-browned scallion and galmaegisal combination

The galmaegisal itself had a chewy texture, and the more you chewed, the more you could taste its nutty flavor. If you're looking for a Gwangmyeong Sageori restaurant and want to try a slightly different pork dish, order the whole-scallion galmaegisal!

Samok teukmoksal: thick, juicy pork neck

A plate of thickly sliced samok teukmoksal

Next up is the samok teukmoksal (premium pork neck). The meat is quite thick, and since the charcoal heat is so intense, the outside cooks quickly to a golden brown while the inside stays moist and juicy!

Thick teukmoksal grilled over charcoal, still juicy

The thick pork neck was so tender! When you bite into it, the juices are moist and the savory pork flavor really comes through! If you love pork neck, this thick style is the pick! It was great wrapped in wild garlic leaves, and also went well with the aged kimchi.

Samok tonghangjeongsal: the best of the three

And finally, the last thing we ate — samok tonghangjeongsal (whole pork jowl)! Of everything I ate that day, the pork jowl was my absolute favorite!!! If you love pork jowl, you have to try this!! Grilled whole and thick over the charcoal, the outside turned golden brown while the inside stayed tender. That signature nutty, chewy texture of pork jowl was still there, and it just got better the more I chewed.

Combined with the charcoal aroma, the savory flavor really came alive! If you're a pork jowl lover looking for a meat restaurant near Gwangmyeong Sageori, this is right up your alley!

Pork kimchi stew to finish the meal

Kimchi stew packed with pork

The kimchi stew was loaded with pork! The broth was spicy and sharp, which was perfect after eating meat. Eating it with rice made it impossible to stop — total rice-thief material. After the charcoal-grilled meat, finishing with kimchi stew was the perfect way to wrap up the meal.

Final verdict after trying all three cuts at Sammokjip

Overall, Sammokjip was a place where I could really feel the charm of charcoal grilling! In particular, dishes like the samok whole-scallion galmaegisal that you can only get here were special, and the teukmoksal and tonghangjeongsal each had different textures and flavors, so I'd recommend ordering a variety!
