Solo-friendly window seats at a Cheonan pork cutlet restaurant: Jinsim

Jinsim Wang Donkatsu Cheonan Buldang is a Korean-style pork cutlet restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan. From a window seat, the writer ate a set of wang donkatsu (giant breaded pork cutlet) with spicy-sweet jjolmyeon (chewy cold noodles) and cream soup, and the crust crackled at the first cut over thick, juicy meat. With a wide hall that suits solo diners and groups alike, Jinsim Wang Donkatsu is a solid pick for a hearty meal in Cheonan.

Buldang-dong Korean restaurant, weekend walk-in bar seats: Hyangtaek

Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is a Korean rice-and-side-dish restaurant on the 1st floor of the Golden Plaza 2 building in Sinbuldang, Buldang-dong, Cheonan. Arriving as a walk-in at weekend opening time with my mom, we took the bar (dachi) seats and shared mackerel gondre rice at 14,000 won, eggplant doenjang rice bowl at 13,000 won and a whole mushroom pancake at 6,000 won. Even if you dislike eggplant, the eggplant doenjang rice bowl with kelp vinegar is worth ordering, and the bar seats work well for two people sharing dishes.

110,000 won sashimi and seafood stew set in Dujeong-dong: Donghae Bada

Donghae Bada Hoetjip is a sashimi and seafood stew restaurant in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan, directly across from the Manghyang Bibim Guksu noodle shop. On a Sunday evening the writer ordered the 110,000 won assorted sashimi and seafood stew set, which brought sea bass, rockfish and bigeye tuna sashimi plus a stew packed with octopus, blue crab, small octopus (nakji) and abalone, and the leftover stew went home for two more meals. With no afternoon break time and a big private parking lot, Donghae Bada Hoetjip is an easy choice when you arrive at an awkward hour.

Sinbu-dong café in Cheonan for 041 walnut milk coffee: Brewers Coffee

Brewers Coffee Cheonan Sinbu Branch is a baked-goods and coffee café in the middle of the Sinbu-dong food alley in Cheonan. On this visit the order was 041 coffee (walnut milk with espresso) at 6,500 won, a salted caramel financier at 3,500 won and a salted choco chip madeleine at 3,600 won, enjoyed at the terrace seats, and the 041 coffee came in a bigger serving than before. After more than 60 visits, the sweet-salty financiers and the terrace mood at Brewers Coffee are still the reason to come back.

Cheonan Buldang-dong sushi with washed aged kimchi: Ganghan Sushi

Ganghan Sushi Cheonan Buldang Branch is a Japanese sushi restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, well suited to eating a sushi set alone. The 12-piece omakase sushi set came with cold soba on the side, and everything from the halibut fin sushi eaten with washed aged kimchi (mugeunji) to the uni and monkfish liver gunkan was satisfying. The cold soba was more than one person needs, but fresh ingredients and a full spread made it a filling meal.

Cheonan Korean BBQ with phone chargers and yogurt: Cham Dwaejitgan

Cham Dwaejitgan Cheonan Dujeong Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan, where staff grill the meat from start to finish. The order was 1 serving of Boseong nokdon (Grade 1 pork) samgyeopsal (pork belly), 2 servings of pork neck, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), steamed egg and 2 servings of fried rice, and Cham Dwaejitgan also keeps phone chargers, hair ties and kids' tableware on hand plus one yogurt per person on the way out. A good choice when you want to talk over dinner instead of watching the grill.

Buldang-dong Korean restaurant off-peak, two bowls for two: Hyangtaek

Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is a Korean rice-dish restaurant on Buldang25-ro in Seobuk-gu, Cheonan. A first visit ended in a turnaround because the wait was too long, so a return trip well past peak time secured a table for mackerel gondre rice and eggplant doenjang rice bowl, eaten with gopchang gim (crinkled seaweed), bibim jeotgal (seasoned salted seafood) and the house sauce. Both bowls were generous enough that two people shared them and still left food behind, though the lack of kimchi was a letdown.

Cheonan dessert café for Nunettine financier takeout: Brewers Coffee

Brewers Coffee Cheonan Sinbu Branch is a baked-goods dessert café on Meokgeori 9-gil in Sinbu-dong, Cheonan. After lunch I ordered an iced americano and took out five baked treats — almond choco madeleine, vanilla canelé, salted choco financier, plain financier and Nunettine financier — then cut each one in half to share with my husband, and the Nunettine financier was the clear winner of the day. Every treat comes individually wrapped, so Brewers Coffee Cheonan Sinbu Branch also works well for gifts.

Thick-cut tuna sashimi set for 3 in Dujeong-dong: Donghae Bada Hoetjip

Donghae Bada Hoetjip is a long-running sashimi and seafood restaurant in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan, serving in-season seafood, grilled fish and raw fish platters. Three of us, including my mom, shared the assorted sashimi and seafood stew set for 3 at 130,000 won, which brought thick-cut tuna sashimi, a seafood stew packed with octopus, abalone and roe, and seasoned fried rice to finish. With private rooms on hand, Donghae Bada Hoetjip works just as well for a team dinner or a meal out with parents.

Cheonan Korean restaurant with a kid: mackerel gondre rice, Hyangtaek

Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is a Korean rice-bowl restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, serving gondre (dried aster greens) rice, rice bowls, and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi. The writer stopped in for lunch after her child's class, waited about 10 minutes behind 3-4 parties, and ordered mackerel gondre rice and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi so her child could eat plenty of fish and seasoned greens. Mild and neatly prepared, Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is worth remembering for family meals with kids in Buldang-dong.

Cheonan coffee shop for a hot flat white and 041 coffee: Brewers

Brewers Coffee Cheonan Sinbu Branch is a signature coffee and baked goods café on Meokgeori 9-gil in Sinbu-dong, Cheonan. On a weekday afternoon here, the 041 coffee with walnut cream and a hot flat white came with an apple Earl Grey financier and a salted choco chip madeleine, and the 041 coffee tasted clean rather than heavy for a nut-based coffee. Brewers Coffee Cheonan Sinbu Branch has no parking of its own, so parking at Shinsegae Department Store and walking over is the easier plan.
