Cheonan Korean restaurant with a kid: mackerel gondre rice, Hyangtaek

In short

Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is a Korean rice-bowl restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, serving gondre (dried aster greens) rice, rice bowls, and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi. The writer stopped in for lunch after her child's class, waited about 10 minutes behind 3-4 parties, and ordered mackerel gondre rice and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi so her child could eat plenty of fish and seasoned greens. Mild and neatly prepared, Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is worth remembering for family meals with kids in Buldang-dong.

I hadn't had lunch with my kid in a while, so after class ended we went out to eat together. I'd heard a new restaurant called Hyangtaek had opened near our house and was curious, and it happened to line up with lunchtime, so we stopped by.

Hyangtaek menu: which dishes work for kids?

Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch's main menu includes mackerel gondre (dried aster greens) rice, eggplant doenjang rice bowl, yukhoe (raw beef) bibimbap, Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi, deodeok mushroom grill, mushroom platter, and galbi platter, plus a seasonal pollack yukhoe cold noodle soup. How long is the lunchtime wait at Hyangtaek?

When I arrived at Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch at lunchtime, there were already people waiting outside, and 3–4 parties were ahead of us, so we had to wait a bit. Once inside, the place turned out to be bigger than I expected. Whether it was word of mouth or just lunch hour, it was busy.

Luckily the turnover was good, so we didn't wait too long. It felt like about 10 minutes before we were seated. Places that are busy at lunch always make me worry about a long wait, but this was manageable.

What side dishes come with the meal?

After sitting down and looking over the menu, we ordered the mackerel gondre rice and the Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi.

Hyangtaek offers more than just mackerel gondre rice — there's also eggplant doenjang rice bowl, yukhoe bibimbap, and other rice bowl options, so it's easy to pick something to your taste. There's also a seasonal pollack yukhoe cold noodle soup, which made me want to try something different next time.

The basic side dishes came out first, and overall they were clean and not spicy or heavy-handed. Each one was neatly plated and looked nice, and they were the kind of sides that cut through richness well when eaten with the main dish.

Mackerel gondre rice and Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi: how did the kid like them?

Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch's mackerel gondre rice was loaded with gondre and other greens plus mushrooms — it looked healthy just by looking at it — and the Cheongsong-style chicken bulgogi we ordered alongside had tender chicken in a slightly sweet sauce that went great with rice. Then the main dishes we'd been waiting for arrived.

It's usually not easy to get my kid to eat greens at home, so a menu like this was welcome. Eating rice, greens, and mushrooms together with mackerel on top felt less like a regular meal and more like a proper nourishing one.

When eating out with a kid, taste matters, but so does whether they'll actually eat a balanced mix of rice and side dishes. That day I managed to get plenty of fish and greens into my kid, and as a mom, that made me quietly proud.

My kid ate better than I expected too. If I say 'eat your greens!' at home, she won't touch them, but when it comes out on a nicely arranged plate at a restaurant, she eats it up. I think moms everywhere know this feeling.

If the mackerel gondre rice felt clean and healthy, the chicken bulgogi was a bit more familiar and appetite-driving. I was glad we ordered both together.

Is Hyangtaek in Buldang-dong good for a family meal out?

Hyangtaek also has a variety of side dishes like deodeok mushroom grill, mushroom platter, and galbi platter, so if you're visiting with a group, adding a few extra dishes to share sounds like a good idea.

Overall, the food was clean and neatly presented, making it a good atmosphere for a family meal. If you're looking for a Buldang-dong restaurant to have lunch with a kid, or to bring your parents to, this kind of Korean restaurant seems like a solid choice.

Sometimes you crave this kind of proper Korean meal — rice, greens, fish — more than something spicy and heavy, and Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch fit that craving exactly.

The restaurant itself is fairly spacious and the food was clean, making it a good spot for family dining. Just getting my kid to eat plenty of mackerel and greens that day was, as a mom, a satisfying meal in itself.

A good place to stop by in Buldang-dong when you're craving clean Korean food or a healthy meal. If you're eating with a kid, Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is worth a visit.

Next time I'd like to try the eggplant doenjang rice bowl or the yukhoe bibimbap, and I'm curious about the seasonal pollack yukhoe cold noodle soup too. The menu is varied enough that this feels like a place I'd want to return to for something new rather than a one-time visit.

It was just a lunch after my kid's class, but it was a good day — getting to eat fish and greens together with her for a filling, satisfying meal after a while. If you're looking for a good Buldang-dong restaurant, Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is worth remembering for a relaxed Korean meal with family.
