Samgye, Gimhae set-menu Korean restaurant for three: Gaya Kkeutjip

Gaya Kkeutjip Samgye is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-menu) restaurant on Gaya-ro 181beon-gil in Samgye, Gimhae, serving gochujang bulgogi, gaori-jjim (steamed ray) and bossam set meals. The writer visited with her mother and ordered the Kkeutjip steamed ray set for three at 23,000 won per person, 69,000 won in total, and found the hearth-grilled mackerel moist with no fishy smell and the steamed ray as big as a large a la carte portion. With one hour of parking supported in the lot beside the restaurant, Gaya Kkeutjip Samgye works well for family meals and company dinners.

Psyche is a beef omakase restaurant with four private rooms in Chojeon-dong, Jinju, Gyeongnam. Jung-dong izakaya in Changwon for tsukune skewers: Yakitori Gong

Yakitori Gong is a Japanese-style izakaya on the 3rd floor of Urban Brix in Jung-dong, Uichang-gu, Changwon. The order was mentaiko scallop cream pasta, tsukune (grilled chicken meatballs) and three yakitori skewers — spring onion chicken thigh, chicken skin and heart — with the chicken skin the clear favourite and the tsukune grilled quite dark on the outside. Yakitori Gong suits two people who want a quiet drink and an easy conversation.

Hanpanjip Changwon Gaeum Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant that recently opened in Gaeumjeong Market in Changwon, Gyeongnam. The 550g minari platter costs 39,900 won and arrives fully grilled with a free steamed egg and seven sauces, and adding kimchi cheese fried rice and bibim noodles at 4,000 won left two people completely full. Wondaepo Sogalbisal is a charcoal-grilled beef short rib restaurant in Oe-dong, Gimhae, Gyeongnam. Arriving around 9pm, I ordered one plate of marinated beef short rib (500g, 32,000 won) with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew); the marinade was mild enough to let the beef flavour come through, and the stew was good enough to finish two bowls of rice. With prices rising everywhere, Wondaepo Sogalbisal is worth a return trip for the value on beef.

Mulgeum, Yangsan sushi restaurant with booth seats: Shirokuma

Shirokuma is a sushi restaurant in Mulgeum-eup, Yangsan, right beside Yangsan Pusan National University Hospital. On an evening reservation, the writer and her boyfriend took a table divided by partitions and ordered salmon 5p + eggplant 5p for 18,500 won and the popular à la carte set of 12 pieces for 22,000 won, with Shirokuma's signature eggplant sushi — crisp outside, moist inside — the standout. With partitions between every table, Shirokuma works easily for a date or even a first blind date.

Kalguksu restaurant in Yangsan with a group room: Eonyang Dak Kalguksu

Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch is a chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant with house-made noodles, right in front of Tongdosa Temple in Habuk-myeon, Yangsan, Gyeongnam. After a walk around the temple we ordered two chicken kalguksu, one chicken gomtang and one plate of chewy mandu, and got a whole chicken sitting on the noodles, a perilla-seed chicken bone broth and dumplings with skins as translucent as starch wrappers. With a large dedicated parking lot and a private group room at the back, Eonyang Dak Kalguksu Tongdosa Branch works well for family and group meals.

Bongga Gukbap is a local gukbap (pork rib soup) restaurant on Giseong-ro in Geoje-myeon, Geoje. The writer ordered mixed gukbap, pork gukbap, and small suyuk (boiled pork), and with a child along, the owner made a clear-broth pork gukbap without dadaegi (chili paste) and even provided a baby spoon. Opening at 7:30 AM, it's a great first meal for a Geoje trip.

Milyang Dol Jjamppong is a Chinese restaurant near Milyang City Hall serving stone-plate jjamppong and jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) with crispy scorched rice at the bottom of the sizzling hot plate. Visiting as a couple on a weekend at noon, we waited 30 minutes and ordered the Dol Jajang plus Pork & Chicken Tang set for ₩37,000, and the way the sauce reduced into a salty, savory glaze along with the crispy rice at the bottom of the stone plate were the standout parts. It's a great pick if you're looking for a memorable jajangmyeon lunch while traveling in Milyang.

VOG HAIR Changwon City Seven Branch is a men's hair salon on the 3rd floor of The City Seven Skycon in Changwon, Gyeongnam. The boyfriend wanted a baby perm but settled on a see-through shadow perm instead, going through a scalp diagnosis, cut, two rounds of heat treatment, and an oil massage, and despite worries that his thin straight hair wouldn't hold curl, the result came out naturally. Slim on the sides with volume revived on top — a very satisfying result.
