Guwol-dong grill house: 86,000-won Premium Ugalbi Set, Sip Sam Dae

Sip Sam Dae is a grill house in Guwol-dong, Namdong, Incheon, behind the Gachon University Gil Hospital emergency room, specializing in 13-day aged ugalbi (thick beef ribs). Two of us ordered the Premium Ugalbi Set (86,000 won) and the staff grilled the ugalbi and pork belly for us, ending with doenjang sulbap (soybean-paste rice), plus homemade cream cheese on the house. A vent built into the center of the grill keeps the air clear and the face across the table in full view, so Sip Sam Dae works for both team dinners and dates.

Sashimi and grilled skewers at Gyeongseong Sanghoe, a Sadang izakaya

Gyeongseong Sanghoe is an izakaya on Bangbaecheon-ro near Sadang Station in Seocho, Seoul, with counter (dachi) seats and table seats. Over beer, the order was today's assorted sashimi for two at 38,000 won and the five-piece assorted skewers at 19,000 won, eaten in alternating bites of cold sashimi and skewers straight off the grill, with a complimentary otoshi of salad, soy-braised beef and pickled chili peppers. Gyeongseong Sanghoe suits a night in Sadang when the goal is a drink with good snacks rather than a full meal.

Uijeongbu pork BBQ restaurant open in the morning: Geuttaegeujip

Geuttaegeujip is a Korean pork (handon) BBQ restaurant in the Uijeongbu Station food alley in Gyeonggi, open 24 hours every day of the year. After dropping the kids at kindergarten, a couple grilled one serving of fresh pork belly and one of pork jowl (hangjeongsal) on a cauldron lid at Geuttaegeujip, added soft tofu sujebi (hand-torn noodle stew), and liked it enough to order a second serving of pork belly. For parents who need a morning or lunchtime meat outing, Geuttaegeujip is an oasis.

Gujwa black pork grill house, Jeju: babymoon set for two at Don Gueo

Don Gueo is an aged black pork grill restaurant on Sepyeonghang-ro in Gujwa-eup, Jeju, a 1-3 minute drive from Sehwa Beach. On a babymoon trip we ordered the Jeju black pork set for two at 21,000 won, which comes with 180g of aged five-layer black pork belly, black pork kimchi stew and rice, then added a 200g portion of aged black pork neck. Grilling bracken fern and kimchi on the pan next to the meat was the standout combination, and Don Gueo scored well on both value and cleanliness.

Soy crab banchan at Hanjan Meokgo Gajami, a Daegu sashimi restaurant

Hanjan Meokgo Gajami is a wild-caught flatfish sashimi restaurant inside Daepyeongri Market in Pyeongri-dong, Seo-gu, Daegu. The writer ordered the small yellowfin flatfish sashimi boneless, and the refillable side dishes — soy-marinated crab, macaroni corn cheese, steamed egg and a large grilled saury — were as memorable as the main plate. With everything from the banchan up made in house, Hanjan Meokgo Gajami is an easy recommendation in Daepyeongri Market.

Sokcho egg tart bakery, gift box instead of dakgangjeong: Doris

Doris Patisserie is an egg tart bakery just off the main street of Sokcho Central Market in Gangwon. A pickup order placed through the Naver Place notice tab covered an Original box (6 tarts) and a cream cheese–walnut box (3 cream cheese, 3 walnut), opened back at the accommodation with crisp pastry and custard that was not overly sweet. For a Sokcho travel gift, Doris Patisserie's egg tarts travel better than the market's usual dakgangjeong (sweet-and-spicy fried chicken bites).

The pistachio cream, made with tofu cream cheese, tasted light rather than heavy, making it a strong pick among the first fig menus of autumn.
