Dog-friendly burger restaurant in Gangneung with two kids: Burger Bar

Burger Bar is a handmade burger restaurant right in front of Sageunjin Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon. Visiting with two kids on a family trip, the writer ordered a lobster burger for 23,500 won, a Daegwallyeong songgo mushroom burger for 17,500 won and fries for 5,000 won at the kiosk, and the outdoor terrace had room for both a dog and a stroller. Burger Bar runs on self-service, so tables turn over quickly, and the burgers are packed fuller than their size suggests.

Sunset hill walk at Geurimseu Cafe, a Cheonan café with pumpkin bread

Geurimseu Cafe is a large brunch café set on high ground on Mijuk 5-gil in Dongnam-gu, Cheonan. Arriving near sunset, we walked the outdoor hill path behind Geurimseu Cafe for mountain views, then ate basil cream pasta and sweet pumpkin campagne at an open indoor table. With green views and a big parking lot, Geurimseu Cafe is an easy place to unwind near Cheongdang-dong in Cheonan.

The set feeds 3 to 4 people and leftovers can be packed to go, so it is worth a return trip.

Soy crab restaurant near Gyeonggijeon, Jeonju: family set at Hanjamae

Hanjamae Ganjang Gejang Jeonju Hanok Village Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Gyeonggijeon-gil in Jeonju that specialises in crab marinated in its own patented fish-sauce soy. In autumn blue crab season a family ordered the soy + spicy combo set at 39,000 won per person, which brought soy-marinated blue crab, shrimp, abalone and salmon alongside spicy crab and spicy shrimp. Nothing was over-salted, so a small scoop of rice in the egg rice was enough, and the spicy sauce sat just above Shin Ramyun heat — easy enough for a family with a child.

On an early weekday evening the writer's family ordered grilled mackerel and aged kimchi mackerel stew with stone-pot rice and side dishes from the self-serve bar, then added a 2,000 won ice cream. Of the two mains, the aged kimchi mackerel stew suited the writer's taste better.

Uijeongbu pork belly grill with ₩3,000 fried rice: Cheonpo Hoegwan

Cheonpo Hoegwan Uijeongbu Main Branch is a minari (water dropwort) pork belly restaurant in the new town area near Uijeongbu Station, Gyeonggi, where one 200g serving of pork belly costs ₩16,000 and the domestic kimchi and minari refill without limit. Two diners ordered three servings and worked through beef tartare, a self-grilled minari kimchi pancake, ₩3,000 fried rice and sungnyung (scorched rice tea) from the stone pot, and the aged pork belly stayed juicy even seared crisp. Cheonpo Hoegwan is worth a stop if you want good-value pork belly near Uijeongbu Station.

Haebangchon pizza bar in Seoul with terrace beer seats: TPM hbc

TPM hbc (더피제리아마켓) is a pizza bar tucked into a Haebangchon alley in Yongsan, Seoul, serving seasonal-ingredient pizza alongside beer and natural wine. On the terrace, the bill came to 71,000 won in total: Seoul Margherita 28,000 won, lactic-fermented pickle 5,000 won, Rolleve Premium beer 18,000 won, and a 20,000 won corkage fee for a sour beer brought from outside. Sinseong Agujjim Asan Branch is a neighbourhood seafood stew restaurant on Samdong-ro 28beon-gil in Asan, Chungnam. The order was algonijjim (spicy braised fish eggs and roe) for two with extra gonyi (soft cod roe) at spice level 2, along with the cheese and sweet potato rice cakes that come included and a fried rice finish. The roe at Sinseong Agujjim was soft with no fishy taste, so paying for the extra portion was the right call.

Tongyeong brunch café with squid ink risotto: Brown Hands Tongyeong

Two couples and their in-laws shared squid ink risotto at 19,000 won, burrata cheese tomato pasta at 20,000 won, Margherita pizza at 24,000 won and a pork cutlet at 16,000 won, and all four dishes were satisfying. Even the family living in Tongyeong had never heard of Brown Hands Tongyeong, which makes it a great sea-view Western restaurant for a group meal.
