Pohang mulhoe restaurant with review-event fried squid: Ppwang Mulhoe

Ppwang Mulhoe is a squid mulhoe (spicy chilled raw fish soup) restaurant on Haean-ro, right in front of the sea at Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, Gyeongbuk. On a weekend trip to Pohang, the writer dined alone and ordered the 3-combo mulhoe (squid, flounder and mixed fish sashimi), then added side dishes from the unlimited self-bar along with squid soup, thin wheat noodles and a mini fried squid received through the review event. Between the icy broth, the squid sashimi and the ocean view, Ppwang Mulhoe is worth recommending for a mulhoe lunch.

Step-free gamjatang restaurant in Nowon, Seoul: Somunnan Gamjatang

Somunnan Gamjatang is a 24-hour gamjatang (pork bone stew) restaurant on Deongneung-ro in Nowon, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Exit 2 of Sangye Station. Two adults shared the small gamjatang for 36,000 won, a broth where perilla powder and ground white beans led the flavor, and the free sujebi (hand-torn dough) made it more than enough for two. The entrance at Somunnan Gamjatang has no step and an indoor ramp covers the level change, so a wheelchair or stroller can roll straight in.

Beef intestine rice bowl with egg yolk in Jung-gu, Seoul: Mentsuru

Mentsuru City Hall Branch is a Japanese ramen and rice bowl restaurant about 93m from Exit 10 of City Hall Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Dining alone at the bar seats, the writer ordered hormone-don (beef intestine rice bowl) for 15,000 won and peach cider for 4,000 won from the in-store kiosk, and the bowl came piled with beef intestine, meat, egg yolk, onion and scallion. Mentsuru is worth noting near City Hall Station when you want a rice bowl rather than ramen for a solo meal.

Cold-pressed juice of the day at Oldsse Seochon, a Jongno hanok café

Oldsse Seochon is a café inside a hanok on Pilundae-ro in Jongno, Seoul, known for wellness juice cold-pressed every morning and an interior shaped by artists' work. On an autumn walk through Seochon I took a window seat with the juice of the day (8,000 won) and looked around the mural showing how a cup of coffee comes to be. Oldsse Seochon suits a short break soaking up the hanok mood more than a long sit-down.

Wondang Station Korean restaurant with sungnyung finish: Kim Myeongju

Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Station Branch is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant across from Exit 1 of Wondang Station in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. The Tteuranchae Bapsang set for three costs 13,000 won per person, and adding boribulbi (dried croaker) for 18,000 won brought 12 side dishes, cheonggukjang (rich fermented soybean stew) and individual stone-pot rice, with the croaker eaten over green tea water and the crust left in the pot poured into sungnyung (scorched rice tea). For a filling Korean spread and easy parking in Wondang, Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang is worth the trip.

Gyeongju pot rice restaurant dinner with kids, 65,000 won: Handa Sot

Handa Sot Gyeongju is a hanok-style pot rice (solbap) restaurant at 111 Cheomseong-ro in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, a short walk from Cheomseongdae and Hwangnidan-gil. Dining with two children, the writer ordered three pots — soy-braised pork belly, abalone and flame-grilled eel — for a total of 65,000 won, and the baby chair plus the wooden tray of side dishes made the family dinner easy. The kids ate the mild soy-braised pork belly pot rice best, while the flame-grilled eel pot rice was the adults' favorite at Handa Sot Gyeongju.

Family dinner in Gangnam: juanjang set and pork gomtang at Yangjaeok

Yangjaeok is a hanok-style Korean restaurant within 300 meters of Exit 4 at Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul. On a weekend evening out with a child and grandparents, the writer ordered the juanjang set (37,000 won) and doeji gomtang (11,000 won), a clear pork soup, and the set arrived as one big platter of jeyuk bokkeum, bossam, dubu kimchi and zucchini pancake, so nobody had to agonize over the menu. The child polished off a whole bowl of pork gomtang, making Yangjaeok an easy pick for a family meal near Yangjae Station.

Sunday dinner at a Naseong-dong Thai restaurant in Sejong: Mekong Thai

Mekong Thai Sejong Naseong Branch is a Vietnamese and Thai restaurant on the 2nd floor of the NS Building in Naseong-dong, Sejong. On a Sunday evening we took a window seat and ordered beef pho (medium), nasi goreng and shrimp pencil spring rolls, then got an extra portion of pho noodles through the receipt review event. Mekong Thai adjusts spice levels and adds bean sprouts, cilantro or lemon on request, and 2 hours of free parking made it an easy, relaxed meal.

Solo kadaif shrimp and tenderloin gyukatsu at Mapo Station: Gyudo

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a gyukatsu restaurant on basement level 1 of the Obelisk APT shopping arcade, linked underground to Exit 1 of Mapo Station in Seoul. Eating solo, the writer ordered the hire gyukatsu (tenderloin) set, limited to 15 servings a day, with 2 pieces of kadaif-crusted fried shrimp and a Kirin Ichiban draft beer, then poured self-bar broth over the pot rice to finish it ochazuke-style. The weekday visit meant no wait at all, and Gyudo's tenderloin gyukatsu ranks as a personal best.

Jeonju Hanok Village foot bath café for a moms' day out: Jeonmang

Anma Jogyok Cafe Jeonmang is a foot bath and massage café on the 2nd floor of a building on Eunhaeng-ro in Jeonju Hanok Village. After dropping the kids off at daycare, two moms settled in for a 40-minute peppermint aroma foot bath at Anma Jogyok Cafe Jeonmang, ran the shoulder massager twice, and used the hand massage tool with a free drink while looking out over the hanok rooftops. The window view made it an easy way to shake off parenting fatigue, and the next day their heels were noticeably less flaky.

Seongsu night café for latte and bread after shopping: LOOOP Bakery

LOOOP Bakery is a large three-floor bakery café on Yeonmujang 5-gil, near Exit 4 of Seongsu Station in Seongdong, Seoul. The writer stopped by at night after shopping and ordered a café latte with a few breads — crisp outside, soft inside, and coffee that was nutty with no sourness, both better than expected. Missing the rooftop in the dark was the one letdown, but LOOOP Bakery is an easy place to sit and rest even late at night.
