Ansan soup restaurant with an in-house butcher shop: Morakmorak

Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specialising in seolleongtang (ox bone soup) and galbitang (short rib soup), located in the basement of Star Plaza in Seongpo-dong, Ansan. The same space also holds a butcher shop and a takeout-only counter, and one seolleongtang and one galbitang shared between two people came with deep broth, generous meat and unlimited banchan from the self-serve bar. Morakmorak Seolleongtang is an easy Seongpo-dong pick whenever a hot bowl of Korean soup is in order.

On a day when you want something softer than jokbal, The Jokbal's bossam and jaengban-makguksu pairing is the one to order.

Hongdae BBQ with tableside grilling, weekday dinner: Gogikkun Gim

Even on a repeat visit, the meat, the cold noodles and the fried rice at Gogikkun Gim Chunbae all tasted better than before.

Seolak Chueotang Hwadeok Saenggeongui Mulwang Reservoir Main Branch is a Korean restaurant serving chueotang (loach soup) and wood-fired grilled fish at the entrance to the restaurant row beside Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Gyeonggi. The abalone chueotang comes with two whole abalones, and the freshly cooked stone-pot rice goes straight into the soup with no water added, making a thick, nutty bowl I finished to the last spoonful. A staff member directs parking, so even on a busy day parking is easy, which makes Seolak Chueotang a good stop on a weekend drive.

Chang beer and mu thod curry lunch at Thanon55, a Seongsu Thai spot

Thanon55 is a Thai restaurant on the second floor of an alley building near Seongsu Station in Seongdong, Seoul. Lunch at Thanon55 was the gamjatang rice noodle soup + shrimp fried rice set, a mu thod curry (S) and a bottle of Chang, the Thai beer, and the mu thod curry topped with fried pork jowl tasted better than the version eaten at a Bangkok restaurant years ago. If you love Thai food, Thanon55 is worth the trip out to Seongsu.
