Pick-your-own combo sashimi with perilla wraps in Guwol-dong: Veteran

Veteran General Fish Market Incheon City Hall Branch is a raw fish restaurant with outdoor patio seating in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon. The small combo sashimi platter here can be picked fish by fish, and this visit paired in-season fall gizzard shad with salmon, wrapped in perilla leaves with garlic and ssamjang from the self-serve bar alongside kimchi pancake. The gizzard shad was thick and nutty and the salmon soft, making Veteran General Fish Market a good choice when you want to build your own sashimi platter.

Jeonpo-dong curry restaurant near Jeonpo Station Exit 8: Sarugak20

Sarugak20 is a Japanese curry restaurant in a basement across from Jeonpo Community Center in Jeonpo-dong, Busanjin, Busan, and the second branch of Moru Sikdang on the Jeonpo cafe street. The writer ordered the half-and-half curry, the special curry and a Sprite, comparing the two curries at a sunlit window bar table. Sarugak20 is an easy walk from Jeonpo Station Exit 8, but there is no parking space or parking fee support, so drivers should use a public parking lot; Sundays close at 17:00.

With corkage-free dinners and two hours of free parking under D-Palace, Wongiok Gwanghwamun is an easy pick for a family meal.

The Musoettuk Samgyeop set for 3-4 people came with minari (water dropwort), tofu, aged kimchi and meljeot (salted anchovy) sauce, and the meal ended with doenjang jjigae, kimchi-mari guksu (cold kimchi noodles) and kimchi fried rice topped with a fried egg. Musoettuk Samgyeop suits a family meal out with kids, since nobody at the table has to grill.

Seongsa-dong fish restaurant for a 5-person in-law meal: Min Cook

Min Cook Apbadang Seongsa is a seasonal fish restaurant in Seongsa-dong, Goyang, Gyeonggi. Five people — in-laws, the writer and the children — shared three seasonal grilled fish sets and two mixed braised fish sets, and that day's grill came with croaker gulbi, flounder, deep-sea cod, gurnard and cutlassfish. Alternating mild grilled fish with spicy braised fish made Min Cook Apbadang Seongsa an easy choice for a family meal with kids.

Sutonggol Korean restaurant with gorgonzola pizza set: Boksakkot

Boksakkot Pineun Jip Daejeon Branch is a large Korean restaurant next to the Sutonggol apartment complex in Yuseong, Daejeon, where sets for two or more come with a handmade wood-fired pizza and coffee. On a weekend visit at 3pm there was no wait, and the table held fire-grilled pork stir-fry, fire-grilled octopus stir-fry, ilpum jumeokbap (signature rice balls), a gorgonzola pizza and an ashatchu (iced tea with an espresso shot) for dessert. Because the meal, pizza and drinks all arrive in one place, Boksakkot works as a family outing with no separate café stop afterward.

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a gogi guksu (pork noodle) restaurant on Aewol-ro in Aewol-eup, Jeju, where Jeju locals and foreign tourists eat side by side. For a can't-go-wrong bowl of noodles in Aewol with children, Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch was the answer.

Dinner grilled meat had to wait for another day, but the Yeoyejeong lunch special alone made a filling meal.

Solo-friendly Cheongju restaurant: short rib pot rice at Sorori Sotbap

Sorori Sotbap Culture Factory Branch is a sotbap (Korean pot rice) restaurant on the first floor of the Wonder Aria building at the Culture Factory in Naedeok-dong, Cheongju. Eating alone, I ordered the best-selling braised short rib sotbap for 16,000 won and packed a salmon buckwheat gimbap (seaweed rice roll) for 13,000 won to take home for dinner; the scorched rice at the bottom of the pot, stirred with butter, was the highlight. With a spacious dining room and a view over the grass plaza, Sorori Sotbap works just as well for a solo meal as for lunch with parents.
