Goseong raw fish restaurant, kid-friendly sashimi to go: Bongpo Hoega

Bongpo Hoega is a raw fish restaurant near Bongpo Beach in Goseong, Gangwon, that brings in its fish every morning from the local fish market auction. On a family trip with a young child, the writer skipped dine-in and took the assorted sashimi platter, medium (69,000 won), back to the rental instead, and Bongpo Hoega packed chojang, soy sauce, wasabi and chopsticks generously enough that setting the table was all that was left. With plump shrimp and a nutty homemade ssamjang included, takeout from Bongpo Hoega turned out to be the right call.

Sweet shrimp sashimi and salt gimbap in Sokcho: Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo

Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo is a sashimi and sushi takeout shop at stall 6 in the chicken alley of Sokcho Tourist Fish Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. Sokcho sweet shrimp sashimi (30,000 won) and flounder-and-aged-kimchi salt gimbap (seaweed rice roll, 20,000 won) went back to the room to eat: the peeled shrimp were springy and turned sweet as you chewed, and the tangy aged kimchi in the gimbap woke up the appetite. Sokcho Daeilho Bangeo is an easy stop for packing a seafood dinner along with other market snacks.

Incheon tuna restaurant ₩38,000 royal course: Donggyeong Sukseong

Donggyeong Sukseong Chamchi is an aged tuna all-you-can-eat restaurant in Yongyeon-dong, Michuhol-gu, Incheon. Booking ahead for a weekday evening, two diners ordered the royal course (₩38,000 per person) and worked through four rounds of cuts, from head meat to belly, then finished with corn cheese, udon, braised and grilled dishes, tuna soup, fried bites and albap (rice with fish roe). With no fishy taste and plenty of umami, Donggyeong Sukseong Chamchi is a solid pick if you want aged tuna at a fair price.

Cheomdan Chinese restaurant, sujebi jjamppong pot for 2–3: Mayway

Mayway is a new Chinese restaurant on Cheomdangangbyeon-ro in Gwangsan, Gwangju, near the Cheomdan Lotte Mart. The handmade sujebi (hand-torn dough) jjamppong arrives in a basin-sized bowl for 2 to 3 people with a plate of beef brisket and mung bean sprouts to boil in at the table, and an opening event gives tangsuyuk for 1,000 won with two draft beers. Ask at the end and Mayway brings out fresh noodles free of charge, which is how the broth gets finished to the last spoonful.

Gwangju black pork belly restaurant: Signature BBQ A Set at Jeju Oktop

Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch is a Jeju black pork restaurant on Gwangju-daero in Gwangju, Gyeonggi. The Signature BBQ A Set for 2–3 people costs 55,000 won, and swapping the pork skin for 100g of a special cut for 4,000 won more brought bonsamgyeop (rib-end pork belly) and gabrisal (pork collar), which staff trimmed and grilled to bite-size pieces at the table. Alternating the juicy bonsamgyeop with the chewy gabrisal kept the meal interesting right to the last piece.

Summer yeolmu bibimbap at Cafe Dongi, a Daegu Korean restaurant

Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant for solo diners in Suseong, Daegu, a 5-minute walk from Exit 4 of Daebong-gyo Station on Line 3. The menu tried here included the seasonal-special yeolmu bibimbap (young radish green rice bowl) at 7,900 won, the grandma-style stir-fried baby octopus set at 16,900 won, the Dongi fire-grilled spicy pork set at 12,900 won and the yeast-aged sweet and sour pork for three at 23,900 won, plus a service bar with free refills of fried eggs, five-grain rice and barley candy. A filling, well-priced Korean meal for a summer day with no appetite.

Jjimgoeul Main Branch is a 30-year-old agujjim (spicy braised angler fish) restaurant in an alley in downtown Jinju, across from the Jinju Youth Training Center. A regular since 2015 ordered the boneless agujjim at spice level 1 and liked the plump fish that needs no bone-picking and the crunchy bean sprouts. Jjimgoeul is worth remembering for a spicy Korean meal near Jinjuseong Fortress and the car-free street.

Jeju hangover soup breakfast at Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi, Hyeopjae Beach

Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi is a haejangguk (hangover soup) restaurant right in front of Hyeopjae Beach in Hallim-eup, Jeju City. On an early morning visit we ordered one bowl of each: the clear Jeju Hyeopjae bomal haejangguk (top shell soup) and the red-broth hanwoo myeongpum naejangtang (premium beef tripe soup), comparing the light broth packed with top shells against the heavy ox-bone tripe soup. Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi is an easy, gentle-on-the-stomach breakfast bowl near Hyeopjae Beach.

Mixed seafood jjim for 28,000 won at Jjimgoeul, a Jinju restaurant

Jjimgoeul Main Branch is a 30-year-old local seafood jjim (spicy braised seafood) restaurant on Namgang-ro in Jinju, Gyeongnam, near Jinjuseong Fortress. On a fourth visit this year the small mixed seafood jjim cost 28,000 won, ordered at medium spice, and came with blue crab, shrimp, jjukkumi (webfoot octopus), scallops and mideodeok (sea squirt), with no fishy taste and crisp bean sprouts. With agujjim, daegu ppol-jjim and kkotge-jjim also on the menu, Jjimgoeul is an easy stop on a Jinju food trip.

Goseong charcoal-grilled pork galbi dinner: Yongchon Gogi-jip

Yongchon Gogi-jip is a pork galbi (pork rib) restaurant on Yongwon-ro in Toseong-myeon, Goseong, Gangwon. For a travel dinner in Goseong, the writer ordered 3 servings of hand-butchered raw pork ribs and 1 serving of salt-aged marinated pork ribs, grilled them over charcoal, and added steamed egg and ugeoji doenjang stew (soybean paste stew with dried cabbage leaves). Because the marinade at Yongchon Gogi-jip is salt-based, it barely burned on the grill and never felt heavy, making it a low-risk dinner choice on a Goseong trip.
