Suwon date café with fortress-wall window seats: Caffeine Focus

In short

Caffeine Focus is a bakery café spread over three floors on Changnyongdae-ro in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. On a hot day walking Hwaseong Fortress, the window seats on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Caffeine Focus looked straight out at the fortress wall and its grassy hill, over an ube cream matcha latte and a strawberry latte — the cream smooth, the strawberry thick with real fruit pieces. A good place to rest with your partner mid-walk and enjoy the fortress view.

My husband and I were out at Hwaseong Fortress and got too hot, so we wanted to duck in somewhere for a bit. While looking for a nice café near Haenggung-dong, we found Caffeine Focus, a bakery café in Haenggung-dong known for its ciabatta.

What is Caffeine Focus known for? Sourdough ciabatta

Right by the entrance stood a sign explaining that they bake sourdough ciabatta fresh in-store every morning. There were quite a few kinds — plain, cheese olive, squid ink cheese, even a ciabatta sandwich — so I imagine plenty of people come here specifically looking for sourdough in Haenggung-dong, Suwon.

What's on the menu at Caffeine Focus

Being a bakery café, ciabatta seemed to be one of the standout items. We'd just walked in from the heat, so we only ordered cold drinks, but looking around at the other tables, quite a few people were eating ciabatta. Now I'm curious — I'll have to try it next time.

Three floors at Caffeine Focus, each with its own mood

Caffeine Focus uses all three floors, from the 1st to the 3rd. Overall it felt clean and calm, and the higher up you went, the quieter and cozier it got.

One wall in particular was all glass, letting soft sunlight in, and it made the space feel really pretty. The tables were spaced generously too, so we could talk comfortably without worrying about the neighboring table.

Which seats have the Hwaseong Fortress view?

What I liked most about Caffeine Focus was, of course, the view out the window. From the 2nd and 3rd floor window seats, you can see the Hwaseong Fortress wall and the grassy hill right there — much closer than I expected. It wasn't just a faraway glimpse of scenery; the fortress wall stretched out in full view, so "café with a Hwaseong Fortress wall view" really fit.

The weather was so nice that looking out at the green grass and blue sky felt like a painting. We'd only come in to rest from the heat, but the view outside was so pretty that we ended up sitting there for a long while just taking it in. We visited during the day, but sitting by the window, I thought it would be lovely to come back around sunset too.

And it was a nice touch that they had blankets ready for anyone who got cold from the air conditioning.

How do the ube cream matcha latte and strawberry latte taste?

Two drinks: ube cream matcha latte and strawberry latte

I ordered the ube cream matcha latte and my husband got the strawberry latte. The ube cream matcha latte won me over just by looking at it. The matcha's characteristic bitterness paired well with the soft sweetness of the ube cream, so neither flavor overpowered the other.

The cream on top was especially smooth — smooth enough that I wanted to eat it on its own — and it really suited my taste. I also tried a sip of my husband's strawberry latte, and the strawberry flavor was quite rich. You could even taste bits of fruit pulp, so it wasn't just artificially sweet — you could taste the actual strawberry, which I liked.

Sitting by the window looking out at Hwaseong Fortress with a cold drink in hand really washed away the fatigue from all the walking.

Instagram-frame-shaped photo zone outside the café

Why Caffeine Focus is a good rest stop on a Hwaseong Fortress date

Outside the café there's also a photo zone shaped like an Instagram frame, so on our way out my husband and I took a commemorative photo together for the first time in a while. Walking around Hwaseong Fortress or Haenggung-dong ends up being more walking than you'd think.

If you want somewhere to rest partway through and take in a pretty view at the same time, this is a good place to stop. The drinks were tasty, but honestly the view was the real star. Next time I'd like to visit around sunset instead of midday to see a different mood.
