Suwon café for Basque cheesecake and yuzu ade: Caffeine Focus

In short

Caffeine Focus is a three-story sourdough bakery café in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, directly across from the Hwaseong Fortress wall. On a weekend outing we ordered the Basque cheesecake, a low-sugar energy ade and a yuzu ade, and found a different fortress view from every floor. The views beat the busier Haenggung-dong cafés, so Caffeine Focus is an easy pairing with a walk along the fortress wall.

If you want to meet the best coffee of your life with the Hwaseong Fortress wall as your backdrop, don't overthink it — come here!

Finding Caffeine Focus on a day out in Haenggung-dong, Suwon

Caffeine Focus is a café in Suwon's Haenggung-dong with the Hwaseong Fortress wall directly across from it. I went on a Haenggung-dong outing on a nice weekend after a long while, wandering around here and there, and that's how I found Caffeine Focus. Personally, the view was so much prettier than the busy, crowded Haenggung-dong cafés — I kind of wanted to keep it to myself, haha, sob.

Walking along the Hwaseong Fortress wall path

Hwaseong Fortress is beautiful in every season, but I really want to tell you to go right now. Walking along the fortress path on a sunny day especially felt like pure healing.

Caffeine Focus bakes with sourdough

Caffeine Focus bakes its bread using natural sourdough starter. The charm of this Hwaseong Fortress-view café is really the bakery, made with so much care. I actually really love sourdough haha — maybe that's why, but the bread is clean and nutty, crisp outside and moist inside, and the texture is outstanding.

I ordered the Basque cheesecake. It's said to be packed with rich, dense cheese flavor.

Caffeine Focus drink menu board

The drink menu was really varied too. This place is known for good coffee, so you should definitely try the coffee. But I'd already had coffee that day, so I ordered the low-sugar energy ade and the yuzu ade — a perfect match for the weather that day, haha.

What makes Caffeine Focus worth a stop?

Without a doubt, it's the Hwaseong Fortress wall view. Since it sits right across from the wall, sitting by the window lets you take in the beautiful fortress scenery at a glance. It's a more distinctly Korean landscape rather than an exotic one, and that's what made it beautiful.

The café uses the entire three-story building, so each floor has a slightly different charm of view. The 1st floor feels closest to the fortress and has a terrace with an open, breezy feel; the 2nd floor has lush green grass and a cozy feel; the 3rd floor feels a bit closer to the sky, where you can take in the fortress's beautiful curves at a glance.

Different spaces on each floor of Caffeine Focus

Which desserts at Caffeine Focus are most popular?

The sourdough-based ciabatta and the Basque cheesecake are the popular picks. Crisp-outside, chewy-inside ciabatta and the rich, cheesy cake pair perfectly with coffee, haha. I heard the sandwiches are that delicious too.

Colorful low-sugar energy ade and yuzu ade

Colorful and pretty, right? The light green one is the low-sugar energy ade, which had a refreshing charm, and the yuzu ade was sweet enough to feel like a real sugar recharge.

Quiet, cozy seating on the 2nd and 3rd floors

What is the atmosphere like on each floor?

The 1st floor has a lively, open feel, while the 2nd and 3rd floors are quiet and cozy. You can pick the space that fits your mood. There's also a terrace seat on the 3rd floor, on the side facing away from the fortress.

Basque cheesecake with a scorched surface

How does the Basque cheesecake taste?

Baked golden brown in the oven, this Basque cheesecake was impossible to just walk past visually. The deeply scorched surface looked appetizing just to look at, and I could feel that signature dense yet soft texture right away.

Cross-section of a bitten Basque cheesecake

With one bite, the slightly bitter, nutty surface and the creamy cheese inside gave off a dense, genuine cheese flavor without being overly sweet — it spread gently and paired perfectly with a refreshing ade or coffee.

Where can you park at Caffeine Focus?

Parking is available briefly for 1-2 cars in front of the store, and you can freely use the resident-priority parking spots in front until 6pm — but not after 6pm. There's a public parking lot nearby, so parking there should work fine :) If you want to enjoy delicious bread and coffee while taking in the Hwaseong Fortress wall view, I recommend Caffeine Focus.

If you're looking for a café with a Hwaseong Fortress wall view, head to Caffeine Focus in Haenggung-dong this weekend without a second thought. The open fortress scenery, the nutty sourdough, and the rich Basque cheesecake together might just give you an unforgettable, perfectly healing time.
