A kalguksu restaurant with 25 years of history near Suwon Station

While hunting for an old-school favorite near Suwon Station, I visited Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, which apparently has a 25-year history. I went in thinking only about kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), but ended up eating barley rice, boiled pork, and grilled octopus stir-fry too, hahaha. Even with a wait, I could tell why people keep coming back.
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch sits close to Suwon Station, so it's easy to reach when you're looking for Suwon Station restaurants. There's no parking lot at the restaurant itself, though, so if you're driving you'll need to use a nearby paid lot. Still, the location makes it convenient to build a schedule around, whether before or after the meal.
It's also a good spot for meeting friends or grabbing a casual bite. If you're planning a Suwon restaurant date, you could easily pair a meal here with wandering around Suwon Station or stopping by a café afterward.
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch has apparently been running for a full 25 years. Plenty of new restaurants pop up these days, but somewhere that's made kalguksu in the same spot for this long naturally makes you curious. And despite being an old-school place, it didn't feel worn-out or uncomfortable — more like a friendly spot you could casually walk into for a meal.
Inside Daseon Kalguksu: a small dining room and a 15-minute wait

When I visited, there were already customers waiting to eat, which confirmed its reputation as a Suwon Station favorite. The wait was about 15 minutes? There were about 3 groups ahead of me. Yes! And the whole time I was eating, the line never let up. But no regrets — it was seriously delicious.
Kalguksu is the kind of easy, satisfying dish that's especially popular at lunchtime, so this felt like the sort of place people looking for Suwon lunch spots would flock to. The restaurant itself is small and cozy — I love that old-school, neighborhood-joint feel! There's a sense that locals keep coming back here, which gives it a different charm from places that mostly draw tourists.
What we ordered: the kalguksu set meal plus spicy stir-fried octopus

We ordered the kalguksu set meal and the grilled spicy octopus stir-fry. The set meal isn't just a bowl of noodles — it comes with bossam (boiled pork), making it a great choice on a day you want a hearty meal. And of course we added the dish I was really looking forward to: the grilled spicy octopus stir-fry.
Honestly, ordering octopus stir-fry at a kalguksu place felt like maybe pushing it a little... but in the end, I was glad we did, hahaha.

Before the main dishes arrived, the side dishes came out first — kimchi, spicy radish salad, and salted shrimp, followed by barley rice. I figured it'd just be a little pre-meal rice, but I ended up liking it more than expected.
I mixed the barley rice with the spicy radish salad, and the crunchy texture paired really well with the plain, clean flavor of the rice. The seasoning wasn't heavy, so it felt like a gentle way to wake up your appetite before the meal. A spoonful of barley rice plus a bite of kimchi before the noodles arrived, and I was thinking — okay, now let's really eat, hahaha.
The boiled pork bossam that comes with the set meal

And then finally, the pork arrived! The bossam that comes with the kalguksu set meal was more delicious than expected — memorable, even. The meat wasn't dry at all; it was soft and tender. Taking a bite, there was no toughness, just a smooth chew, and a little salted shrimp on the side brought out the clean flavor of the meat even more.

I came for kalguksu but ended up properly enjoying the bossam too, so ordering the set meal was clearly the right call. The seasoning on the pork wasn't too strong either, which made it easy to eat alongside the noodles.
How the kalguksu broth tastes: anchovy and clams

Of course, coming to Daseon Kalguksu, the noodles couldn't be skipped. The taste was... wow — clean and so refreshing! The anchovy and clam aromas made me feel like I'd landed at the seaside, hahahaha. Ahyahaha.
The clean, plain flavor of the noodles worked really well. Eating the warm broth and noodles together felt settling, and pairing it with kimchi matched the noodles' cleanness with the kimchi's savory depth nicely.
Big, soft octopus with smoky char in a sweet-spicy sauce

And then, finally, the long-awaited grilled spicy octopus stir-fry arrived! The portion was hefty from the moment I saw it. Piled generously on the plate with big chunks of octopus, my first thought was — this would make a great drinking snack too, hahaha.
And the taste — wow, that smoky char really comes through. But it's not just barreling forward with pure heat. There's a spicy-sweet balance that makes it pleasant to eat comfortably. I can't handle super spicy food for more than a few bites — total spice wimp! — but this was just the right level, hahaha. Definitely spicy, but with enough sweetness backing it up that my chopsticks kept going back for more.
What I liked most was the texture of the octopus! Even though the pieces were huge and thick, they weren't tough at all — soft and tender. Octopus stir-fry can easily turn rubbery if overcooked, but these big chunks had a nice soft bite. And the deep smoky flavor lingered with every bite — that was the standout point.
The seasoning on the grilled octopus was also quite impressive — genuinely tasty enough that I kept reaching for more octopus, hahaha. Since the pieces were so thick, there was real chew to it too. Soft, but not mushy — with just the right springiness, so the more you chewed, the more the octopus's natural nutty flavor came through.
Honestly, this grilled spicy octopus changed my whole impression of Daseon Kalguksu. I went in thinking it'd obviously be a kalguksu place first and foremost, but after eating, I'd say it could just as easily be called a grilled spicy octopus place! With that sweet-spicy seasoning plus the smoky char, it works great as a side with rice, but honestly, anyone who enjoys drinking would love ordering this as a drinking snack too, hahaha.
Came for kalguksu, won over by the stir-fried octopus at Daseon
Overall, the meal felt like proof of why this is a long-running local favorite, hahaha. True to its 25 years, the whole spread was solid from start to finish — the barley rice and spicy radish salad to start, tender bossam, and finally the smoky grilled spicy octopus. Every single dish was delicious.
This felt very much like a place that's competed on food quality, in the same spot, near Suwon Station, for a long time. Starting with barley rice and radish salad, then bossam, kalguksu, and finally the grilled octopus — by the end, I felt like I'd had a truly complete meal, hahaha. The smoky grilled spicy octopus especially is the kind of dish I'll be thinking about again before my next visit.
This place is worth checking out not just for people looking for Suwon kalguksu spots, but also for anyone who loves spicy octopus stir-fry. It's a solid pick whether you're after a Suwon lunch spot or planning a low-key Suwon restaurant date. If you're searching for a long-running favorite near Suwon Station, Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch deserves a spot on your list. I went in thinking only about kalguksu and left completely won over by the tender bossam and the smoky grilled spicy octopus. The octopus especially was big, soft, and coated in that sweet-spicy sauce — I already want to go back for it again.
