Friday-night whole chicken timed to the roast at Jangjakgun, Seongnam
In short
Jangjakgun Main Branch is an oak firewood roast chicken restaurant a 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of Dandaeogeori Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. On a Friday evening outdoor table, the writer ordered the hanbang nurungji tongdak (herbal crispy-rice roast chicken) with a grilled boneless chicken feet set and a rice ball, scraped up the crispy rice at the bottom of the stone plate, and liked it enough to take two more birds home. The roast chicken comes out at a fixed time each day, so it's best to call ahead.

The moment I arrived, the smell of burning oak firewood hit me. Drum-can stools and round steel tables — this place looked like it had the outdoor drinking-tent vibe down perfectly.
On a Friday evening I wanted a proper drink with a friend but didn't want to go to the usual spot, and I also wanted to fill up on something solid. So I went to Jangjakgun, a well-known spot near Dandaeogeori. Spoiler: I ended up falling for the seating atmosphere even more than the chicken. But there's one thing you need to know before you go, or you might make a wasted trip — so let me start with that.

Jangjakgun's location and hours
📍 Location A 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of Dandaeogeori Station. It sits right next to Starbucks and Ediya, so it's easy to spot from the street.
🕕 Hours Weekdays 16:30–23:00 Weekends 16:00–23:00 Last order 22:00 Note that weekend and weekday hours differ, so plan your visit accordingly!

This is the view from the outdoor seating. The windows are all left open so inside and outside just flow together. Perfect seating for this kind of weather.
🅿️ Parking You can use the public street parking out front or the Save Zone parking lot across the street. At Save Zone, even buying just a pack of ramen gets you a 4-hour discount, and parking is free after 9pm. Parking really matters, right 👍
90 minutes at 400 degrees over oak firewood — chicken with all the fat rendered out

There's a big stack of firewood next to the grill. They roast the chicken over oak firewood at 400 degrees for about 90 minutes, which is why the fat renders out completely while the meat stays tender. Everything on the menu is available to go, and dogs are welcome too 👀

When the roast chicken comes out, and reservations
⏰ This is the most important part. As the sign out front says, the roast chicken comes out at a fixed time. Weekdays it's 4:30pm, weekends and holidays it's from 4pm. Makes sense, since it needs a full 90 minutes of roasting.
Same-day reservations are possible, but only by phone and only before opening time, so it's much easier if you call ahead. I went early around 5pm and got seated with no wait, but apparently there's a wait during the after-work rush between 6 and 7pm, so I'd recommend avoiding that window or calling ahead.

Self-serve side dishes and menu prices
Side dishes are self-serve. Utensils, small plates, and sauces are all gathered in one spot, which made things easy to navigate. There's a sign asking you to only take as much extra side dish as you'll eat, just so you know!
You order through the tablet on the table. No need to flag down staff, which is definitely convenient ❗ Here's what the menu prices look like.
- Hanbang nurungji tongdak (herbal crispy-rice roast chicken) ₩21,000
- Grilled boneless chicken feet ₩18,000
- Stone plate corn cheese ₩8,000
We got the set that bundles the roast chicken with boneless chicken feet for ₩37,000, and added a rice ball for ₩4,000 and a zero-sugar cider for ₩2,000.
The basic side dishes were pickled radish, yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), and cabbage salad, served with salt, mustard, and chili sauce. Not a flashy spread, but since this place is all about the roast chicken, the simplicity actually felt right.

Hanbang nurungji tongdak, a whole bird on the stone plate
The signature dish at Jangjakgun: hanbang nurungji tongdak. A whole bird comes out on the stone plate. Look at that skin color — glossy is the only word for it 👀 Underneath is a bed of glutinous rice nurungji (crispy scorched rice), which soaks up the chicken fat while it roasts.
You have to eat the breast meat first — there's none of that dryness here

Once you're seated, staff come over and debone the breast meat for you. They even tell you the order to eat it in — apparently eating the breast first keeps it from tasting dry.

...👍 They were right. Maybe because it's roasted for a full 90 minutes, the texture holds together but the inside is moist — none of that usual dry-breast texture. All the fat is rendered out, yet it's somehow even more tender. Managed to pull off something that's genuinely hard to do.
Try dipping it lightly in just salt. It's seasoned perfectly even without sauce — turns out that's the fundamental combo 😁 Following the order really matters, so I'd recommend breast first, then moving on to the legs and wings.

Good pairings: grilled boneless chicken feet and rice ball
There's one more thing worth ordering alongside the roast chicken at Jangjakgun — the grilled boneless chicken feet that come with the set.

It comes with stone plate corn cheese on the side. Stretch the spicy chicken feet through the cheese and the heat gets tamed while the savory flavor comes through. Since the roast chicken itself is on the mild side, having this spicy dish alongside balances things out nicely.

I also tried the ₩4,000 rice ball. It comes with seaweed flakes, flying fish roe, and pickled radish, and you mix it yourself. The flying fish roe pops and the pickled radish stays crunchy, so the rice doesn't feel heavy — it goes down light. Topping it with a piece of chicken feet is also a real treat.

A setup like this wouldn't feel complete without something fizzy. Having a drink outdoors with the smell of firewood in the air made for a proper way to close out the evening 🖤
Once you've finished the chicken, the crispy rice stuck to the stone plate is left — the real final course

After picking the chicken clean, there's crispy scorched rice left stuck to the bottom of the stone plate. It's soaked in chicken fat and savory, so I scraped it up with a spoon and ate every last bit. You know that stretch where you're full but your hands just won't stop 😁
Honest overall thoughts and drawbacks
I'd definitely come back to Jangjakgun. Not many places commit this hard to a single roast chicken dish. That said, the outdoor seats are drum-can stools with no backrest, so if you plan to sit for a long time, indoor seating might be better. And since the roast chicken comes out at a fixed time, they can sell out if you go too late — worth calling ahead!

I was so satisfied while eating that I ended up taking two more birds home to go. Takeout is available, so definitely keep that in mind!
