Gyeongju dessert shop with every mochi flavor left at 11am: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a fruit mochi and tart takeout dessert shop on Sajeong-ro in Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil. Arriving around 11am on a weekend, when every mochi flavor was still in stock, we took home mango yogurt, dark chocolate, fig, and pineapple mochi for 22,500 won in total, with 500 won off each piece for buying four or more. Of the four Tareudang mochi, the juicy pineapple and the pave-chocolate-like dark chocolate were the most satisfying.

What is Tareudang? A takeout dessert shop in Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil

Tareudang is a dessert shop specializing in fruit mochi and tarts at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk, in Hwangnidang-gil. While wandering around Hwangnidang-gil on a Gyeongju trip, I stopped by Tareudang, which is famous for its desserts. I wanted to recommend it right away as one of the best dessert spots in Hwangnidang-gil.

Tareudang was already famous as one of the best dessert spots in Hwangnidang-gil, so I'd known about it for a while — finally made it here! ୧⃛(๑⃙⃘◡̈๑⃙⃘)୨⃛

Front of the small, takeout-focused Tareudang shop

Tareudang isn't really the kind of café where you sit at a table with your drink and dessert — it's a small shop run mostly for takeout.

They sell mochi and tarts together, so it's perfect for picking something up as you pass by!!

Eye-catching orange exterior of Tareudang

Isn't the exterior really cute too? The orange color stands out nicely among all the other shops in Hwangnidang-gil.

Tareudang menu: the tart and fruit mochi lineup

At Tareudang they sell an egg tart set, cheesecake tart, and fruit mochi together. Since it's tart-focused, they also carry the egg tart set.

They also sell cheesecake tart, which I imagine would pair really well with milk.

Since I came specifically to focus on the mochi ㅎㅅㅎ, I checked out the mochi lineup — they even had persimmon and a low-sugar mochi, which is great news for anyone watching their sugar intake.

I thought the mochi seemed a bit pricey at first, but once you see the size, that thought disappears completely!! They're giant mochi, seriously huge. Honestly the price felt more like good value for what you get.

Tareudang mochi prices and sellout time: all flavors left at 11am on a weekend

Tareudang makes its mochi fresh every day. Once they sell out, the shop closes early, so it's a good idea to call ahead and check!! We visited around 11am on a weekend and every single flavor was still in stock.

How Tareudang packs the mochi: cooler bag, ice pack, and hanji wrapping

Tareudang cooler bag packaging with an ice pack

They packed everything in a box like this and gave us an ice pack inside a cooler bag, so it seemed like it would easily hold up for 4-5 hours.

Four Tareudang mochi packed in a box

Each one was wrapped nicely in hanji (traditional Korean paper), which makes it great for gifting too ✨❤️

I chose fig, pineapple, mango, and chocolate — the smallest wrapping was for the chocolate mochi!!

Taste review of four Tareudang mochi flavors

Pineapple mochi (5,500 won)

It's hard to tell the size from photos, but it's genuinely huge — about the size of an adult man's fist 🫢

Cross-section of Tareudang pineapple mochi packed with pineapple and fresh cream

You can see it's packed full of pineapple and fresh cream. The rich, sweet pineapple juiciness hits first, and the cream follows behind with a mellow sweetness — sweet and tangy at once. So much juice too — this was the one I enjoyed the most ✨🤍

Mango yogurt mochi (7,500 won)

Mango yogurt mochi is, exactly as the name says, a combo of sweet mango and yogurt cream.

Seriously giant-sized... 🫢

Cross-section of mochi showing mango and yogurt cream

The mango was so soft to bite into, and the texture blended really well with the chewy mochi skin. If you like mango itself, this is a menu you'll be 100% satisfied with. The yogurt cream wasn't too acidic and had just the right tanginess, so it paired well with the mango.

Fig yogurt mochi (5,500 won)

Fig had the fewest pieces left and looked the most popular, so that's why I picked it up.

This one was a combo of red bean + yogurt cream + fig.

You can see the whole fig inside... 🥹 Figs have their own gentle sweetness, and with the yogurt added inside, the whole thing feels really refreshing!! The fig seeds give a slight crunchy texture, which is great sitting between the soft yogurt and chewy mochi. If you prefer fruit-based desserts that aren't too heavily sweet, this one comes highly recommended!!

Dark chocolate mochi (5,500 won)

Unlike the fruit-based mochi, this one is chocolate-centered, so despite being small, it felt heavy.

Small but heavy Tareudang dark chocolate mochi

Biting into the chewy mochi skin, the rich chocolate flavor inside comes through strongly, layered with that characteristic soft, sticky mochi texture — genuinely so good... ❤️

Cross-section of dark chocolate mochi filled with pave chocolate

It's not a chocolate-mixed cream but truly rich, luxurious pave chocolate through and through, which gave it the strongest 'proper dessert' feel of the four. I think this would suit anyone who loves sweet chocolate desserts. The pineapple and chocolate mochi were my favorites 💛

  • Fruit mochi that's easy to enjoy while exploring Hwangnidang-gil
  • A combo of chewy mochi and generous chunks of fruit
  • Wide menu choice from dark chocolate to yogurt fruit flavors
  • A Gyeongju Hwangnidang-gil dessert great for packing multiple flavors to share
  • Good as a snack while sightseeing around Hwangnidang-gil

Is Tareudang mochi worth it as a Gyeongju dessert gift?

Of all the desserts I tried around Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Tareudang's fruit mochi was the most satisfying!! The chunky fruit inside the chewy mochi skin catches the eye visually, and the flavor and texture change noticeably depending on the fruit, making it great to pick several and share. It's a great Hwangnidang-gil café to stop by if you're looking for a simple dessert while walking around, or want to pack something a little different as a Gyeongju trip souvenir 🍡🍑✨❤️
