Gyodong izakaya in Daegu: sake-steamed clams with pasta at Naiba Hutto

In short

Gyodong Naiba Hutto is a Fukuoka street-stall-style izakaya in Gyodong, near Dongseong-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu. The set of 7 yakitori skewers plus sake-steamed clams (bajirak suljjim) costs 32,000 won, and adding pasta to the clam broth turns it into something close to vongole; chicken nanban and yaki gyoza round out the order. With binchotan-charcoal yakitori and a long highball and sake list, Naiba Hutto suits a drink after work or a small group night out.

I was after a place that could capture the real feel of a Japanese street stall when I wanted a light drink after work, and that's how I found Naiba Hutto, a new izakaya in Dongseong-ro/Gyodong. The vibe and the food quality both hit the spot, so I'm writing it down.

Naiba Hutto's entrance and signboard

The name "Naiba Hutto" comes from the Japanese-style pronunciation of "neighborhood," apparently.

Inside Naiba Hutto: bar seats, terrace and group tables

Inside, Naiba Hutto is styled after the street-stall alleys near the Naka River or Tenjin Station in Fukuoka. They say they're going for a space you can drop into anytime like visiting a neighbor, and the moment I walked in I felt that cozy, exotic atmosphere.

From bar tables to a terrace to group seating for 3 up to 8 people, it works well for a date or a small get-together.

On cooler days, the outdoor terrace seats seem like they'd be pretty romantic. We wanted to try them too, but unfortunately they were already full, so we missed out :(

Naiba Hutto's menu and what we ordered

From the set menus, we ordered the 7-piece yakitori + clam hot pot (₩32,000), plus chicken nanban and yaki gyoza.

The drink lineup was seriously stacked! From over 10 kinds of highballs to sake by the glass, 250ml tokkuri, and bottles, there's plenty to casually pick and choose from.

7 yakitori skewers grilled over binchotan charcoal

While we were browsing the drinks, the yakitori came out.

7-piece yakitori set on the table

They only use domestic chicken, and it's brushed with a house-made tare sauce simmered for 4 hours with chicken wings, chicken bones, vegetables and spices.

Maybe because they grill it over premium Maithiyu binchotan charcoal instead of regular charcoal, there was a subtle smoky aroma and juicy, moist meat that was outstanding. Crispy outside, tender inside — a perfect drinking snack.

Sake-steamed clams: why the pasta add-on is a must

The clam hot pot that came with the yakitori set. They said it's made from a cooling mussel broth cooked in-house, blended with two other broths, and loaded with plenty of clams.

Spicy yet clean-tasting, it was perfect with soju. One bite in and I thought, oh, we absolutely have to add pasta to this!!! Eat some of the clams first, then definitely add it!! That's an order!!

Pasta added to the clam hot pot

It turns into a fantastic vongole-style pasta, and I need to crack open another soju,, seriously so good 👍

Finishing the night with yaki gyoza

Last but not least, the yaki gyoza we added.

Crispy yaki gyoza served hot

Crispy and hot, it's the perfect way to close out an izakaya meal. Dip it in the soy sauce and gobble it up.

If you write a Naver receipt review during your visit, be sure to grab the free cucumber salad or yaki gyoza that comes with it.
