Yeoksam-dong sushi restaurant, Korean beef tartare sushi: Sushi Maiu
In short
Sushi Maiu Seolleung Station Branch is a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant in Yeoksam-dong near Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Dining alone at 3pm on a Saturday, the writer ate two plates of Korean beef tartare (yuk-sashimi) sushi along with otoro, sea urchin roe maki and cheese grilled prawn sushi, with plates priced from 2,100 to 7,500 won. Because plates on the rail can be left covered and ordered fresh instead, Sushi Maiu suits a solo meal at an in-between hour.

Sushi Maiu Seolleung Station Branch is a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Plates range from ₩2,100 to ₩7,500 depending on color, and they're open daily from 11am to 10pm. I went alone on a Saturday at 3pm.

I had errands near Seolleung Station and ended up needing lunch at an awkward hour, so I looked for somewhere nearby to eat solo. My appetite's been acting up lately — I didn't want to eat light, but I also didn't want to eat a ton either.. (make up your mind, self) Then I spotted a conveyor-belt sushi place and walked in.

Why Sushi Maiu works for a solo meal near Seolleung Station

Sushi Maiu Seolleung Station Branch has an easy, no-pressure setup of bar seats and solo seats along the rail. There are regular table seats too!
I went around 3pm on a Saturday, and there were only about two other tables. The place was cozy and quiet — quiet enough that I felt like I was filming Solitary Gourmet haha. I'm pretty much a solo-dining pro, but I still get self-conscious sometimes. There was already another solo diner there though, so this seems like a good spot if you're looking for solo dining near Seolleung Station.

There's a row of seats running along the rail, and a separate table section further inside.
Sushi Maiu's rail plates and made-to-order sushi

At Sushi Maiu Seolleung Station Branch the sushi comes around on the belt, but they also give you a separate menu so you can order directly. There's even udon and other meal options, plus some snacks.

They put covers over the sushi on the rail so the fish doesn't dry out. (Relief.) That's always the thing that bugs me at conveyor-belt places.

When you grab a plate that's been circling for ages, the fish gets dry and loses flavor.. but at Sushi Maiu you don't have to worry about that.

There's one chef, and you can watch everything he's torching right there — fun to watch. I also liked that they make things fresh to order when you ask. Anything just made goes straight onto the rail quickly.
Sushi Maiu plate prices in Yeoksam-dong, from 2,100 to 7,500 won

Sushi Maiu Seolleung Station Branch starts as low as ₩2,100! Besides conveyor-belt sushi, there are rolls, appetizers, and desserts too. Sides too. There's also a lunch set course, so if you're looking for a lunch special at a sushi place in Yeoksam-dong, this is worth noting.
Takeout is also available — they've put together their best-selling items separately, like assorted sushi, the popular sushi set, and roll sets, which made it easy to pick. (And delivery orders kept coming in the whole time I was there.)

And right now, for their 13th anniversary event, beer and soju are ₩2,500. But only in the evening, after 4pm! Perfect timing for a solo drink after work..
Ordering the Korean beef tartare sushi twice

At conveyor-belt sushi places I usually like to try as many different kinds as possible, but I still ended up having two whole plates of Korean beef tartare sushi.

It's lightly seasoned, and the chewy texture was really good.

The most expensive plate was the otoro. The thickness was on another level — a single piece served on its own little cutting board. It had a real bite to it.

Sea urchin maki. At first I ordered it thinking, wait, what is this..? and it turned out to be sea urchin maki!! haha.

They put the sea urchin right on top of the maki, and I loved how the seaweed aroma and the sea urchin's distinct scent came through together. >< A lot of people can't handle it, but I love sea urchin, so I was satisfied.

The salmon sushi had just the right amount of richness running through it.
The rice portions look small, but the fish is sliced just enough to match, so the balance works out well.

The cheese grilled prawn sushi and the cheese grilled salmon roll are best eaten right when they come out from the torch, while they're still warm.

Piled high with cheese, savory, and even though it's sushi, it's warm, which makes it feel that much more filling? You know how some people can only eat cooked fish? Even they could probably eat this.
