Tomoru Bakery, a must-visit near Triple Street in Songdo, from the cucumber baguette to all kinds of bread.

Cucumber baguette and bread selection at Tomoru Bakery, Songdo

After shopping or a date in Songdo, Triple Street is one of those places you naturally end up stopping by. This time I went to Triple Street in Songdo and got pulled in by the smell of bread — I ended up at Tomoru Bakery in Songdo.

I love bread in general, so it's hard for me to just walk past a bakery. The moment I stepped into Tomoru Bakery, there were way more kinds of bread and cookies on display than I expected, so it was fun just browsing. From savory meal breads to sweet desserts to good snack-sized breads, there was so much variety it was hard to pick just one.

There was one menu item I'd been especially curious about — the famous cucumber baguette. Just hearing the name, cucumber and baguette felt like an odd combination, but since it's such a well-known item here, I decided this was the time to finally try it.

How wide is the bread selection at Tomoru Bakery?

Walking into Tomoru Bakery in Songdo, the breads were laid out by type. I'd only planned to buy the cucumber baguette, but browsing piece by piece, before I knew it I was picking up several other kinds too. It really is hard to stick to a plan at a bakery.

There were savory meal breads, sweet breads, and dessert-type items that go well with coffee, all lined up so you could pick according to your taste.

  • White castella
  • 100% milk bread
  • Salt bread
  • Rye fig bread

What the cucumber-packed baguette actually tastes like

Cucumber baguette

Cross-section of the cucumber baguette packed with cucumber

Biting into the cucumber baguette, you first get the plain, nutty flavor typical of a baguette, followed by the cool, crunchy texture of cucumber. There's more cucumber packed in than I expected, so that crisp crunch really comes through with every bite.

The bread-and-cucumber pairing felt a bit unexpected at first, but once I tried it together, it worked better than I thought. What I liked most was that the cucumber kept the bread from feeling heavy. The plain multigrain baguette paired with cool cucumber made for a flavor clearly different from other breads.

And you can't leave out the secret sauce in this item. The recipe is apparently kept secret, but it's surprisingly addictive. It's like the sauce ties everything together between the coolness of the cucumber and the plainness of the baguette. Rather than the sauce standing out too strongly on its own, it added to the overall flavor when eaten together with the cucumber and baguette. So at first I was thinking, 'what would a cucumber baguette even taste like?' but after one bite, I kept reaching for more.

Fresh vegetable croquette at Tomoru Bakery

It's hard to walk past croquettes at a bakery, so I picked up Tomoru Bakery's fresh vegetable croquette too. The outside was fried to a nice, savory crisp, and the vegetables inside made it a filling snack. The crunchy croquette shell paired with the soft vegetable filling inside made it feel satisfying too. If you're not just a sweet-bread person, this kind of savory meal bread is worth picking up as well.

From croissants to the myeongnan green onion baguette

Tomoru Bakery also had a classic croissant along with the unique myeongran green onion baguette (pollack roe and scallion baguette). The croissant is a familiar item for anyone who loves the nutty flavor of layered, flaky pastry. The myeongran green onion baguette, as the name suggests, sounds like it would be salty and savory — the plain flavor of the baguette combined with salty myeongran (seasoned pollack roe) and the aroma of green onion, which seemed like it would work well as a meal bread too.
