In short

Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok is a lamb skewer and lamb chop restaurant on the 2nd floor of Queens Park 10, near Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul. The writer and her husband ordered two servings of lamb sirloin skewers, one serving of lamb rib-meat skewers, guo bao rou (sweet and sour crispy pork) and Hwarodam's spiced noodle soup, finishing the pre-seared skewers over the charcoal brazier at the table with almost no gamey lamb smell; the cheongyang chili soy sauce and baek-kimchi (mild white kimchi) suited the lamb especially well. With 4 hours of free parking as well, Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok was the most satisfying lamb skewer meal she has had in years.

My husband and I go out for lamb skewers or lamb chops now and then, and even places praised as neighborhood favorites have often turned out to be pretty average when we actually tried them.

Cheonji Yang Kkochi in Mangwon-dong always has a line and is busy, but personally I never thought it was amazing. I've also been to Iga-ne Yang Kkochi and Ramujin near Hapjeong Station, and Hwayangyeonga near Sookmyung Women's University, among other lamb restaurants.

The one that's stuck in my memory as the tastiest so far is Ichiryu in Hapjeong — genuinely delicious, but a bit pricey for frequent visits.

This time, through a Superchart tasting, I visited Hwarodam Yang Kkochi in Magok, and honestly, it's the most satisfying lamb skewer place I've had in years.

Above all, the lamb itself felt like really good quality.

When we first walked in, my first impression wasn't "lamb skewer place" so much as how clean and stylish the space looked.

Each table was set up in a somewhat separated way, so it didn't feel too open, and there was also a separate room-style space.

So it worked well for the two of us as a couple, but it also seemed like a good fit for friends, or for larger groups like a family dinner or a work gathering.

Personally, I really liked how the space was laid out.

When you think of a lamb restaurant, you usually picture a casual, noisy atmosphere, but Hwarodam was clean and comfortable overall — the kind of place you could bring your parents to.

Families with babies in particular might feel a bit hesitant about grilling lamb out, but since the tables were somewhat separated and there was a room available, it seemed fine for family visits too.

This time we ordered two servings of lamb sirloin skewers, one serving of lamb rib-meat skewers, guo bao rou, and Hwarodam's noodle soup.

Since the skewers come pre-seared once, it was nice that we could eat them a bit faster than if we'd had to grill them from raw at the table.

All we had to do was finish grilling the pre-seared skewers a bit more over the charcoal, and it was nice to watch the meat cook and eat it right away.

Do the lamb sirloin and rib-meat skewers taste gamey?

The dish I was most satisfied with this meal was, of course, the lamb.

We had lamb sirloin and lamb rib meat, and the meat was genuinely fresh and tender.

Most of all, there was barely any of that gamey smell lamb usually has.

Normally after eating lamb, I'll get that distinctive lamb smell coming back up when I burp while digesting once I'm home, but this time there was hardly any of that discomfort even after the meal.

It made me think, "Wait, I just ate lamb — why does it feel this clean?"

The sirloin was tender and mild, while the rib meat had a pleasantly chewy texture, so switching between the two kept things from getting repetitive.

Hwarodam also serves three special sauces to eat with the meat.

Each one tastes a little different, so you can dip according to your preference, and my favorite was the one made with finely chopped cheongyang chili peppers steeped in soy sauce.

Eating the lamb skewers with the cheongyang chili sauce cut through the richness of the meat cleanly, so I kept reaching for it.

The meat itself was delicious, but having a side sauce that complemented it this well made the skewers even more enjoyable.

Baek-kimchi and side dishes served by default

Baek-kimchi and the crunchy side dishes served with the lamb

The baek-kimchi (white, non-spicy kimchi) served as a default side was also quite clean-tasting.

Eating it alongside the lamb felt like it reset my palate each time, so I kept eating it and ended up asking for a refill.

Another thing that stood out was a crunchy radish-like side dish, the kind commonly served at lamb restaurants.

I don't know the exact name, but it tasted a bit different from what I've had at other lamb skewer places.

There was a faint hint of something like mala spice, and since I personally like that flavor, I ended up enjoying it quite a lot.

The crunchy texture was fun too and paired well with the lamb skewers, which made me feel like they put real thought into the basic side dishes, not just the sauces.

Next time, I definitely want to try the lamb chops too.

This time we ordered sirloin and rib meat, and since the meat itself was so satisfying, I got curious about how the lamb chops would taste.

Guo bao rou (sweet and sour crispy pork) at Hwarodam

The guo bao rou (sweet and sour crispy pork) was fried crispy with a classic sweet-and-sour sauce.

Honestly, guo bao rou is a dish you can easily order at any lamb skewer restaurant, so I didn't feel it was especially distinctive, but it was a good side to eat alongside the skewers.

The crispy texture and sweet-tangy flavor paired well when alternated with the lamb.

Hwarodam noodle soup: the spiced surprise of the meal

Personally, the noodle soup was a bit of a surprise.

Usually when you order noodle soup at a lamb skewer place, you expect a familiar broth flavor, but Hwarodam's noodle soup had a faint hint of spice in the broth.

I tend to like spiced dishes like mala tang, so it actually suited me well.

If you enjoy mala tang or Chinese-style spiced dishes, this will probably be to your taste.

It was also a nice way to finish off the meal with a warm broth after the lamb skewers.

Easy parking matters a lot when eating in Magok, and Hwarodam has an underground parking lot in the building, with 4 hours of free parking available if you have a meal.

I liked being able to eat at a relaxed pace without worrying about the clock.

Meals can run a bit long especially when visiting with family or parents, so 4 hours of free parking took away that pressure.

Verdict: the most satisfying lamb skewers in Magok in years

I like lamb skewers and have been to quite a few places, so I used to think "lamb skewer restaurants are all pretty similar."

But this time, Hwarodam Yang Kkochi was the most satisfying in terms of freshness and tenderness among the lamb I've had in years.

I could actually see the lamb being refrigerator-aged in the restaurant, and I think that aging process was probably part of why the meat felt so tender and clean.

Eating it, both the sirloin and rib meat were tender in texture, with barely any of that distinctive gamey lamb smell.

On top of that, the three special sauces including the cheongyang chili one, the baek-kimchi, and the crunchy side dish all paired well with the lamb, and the clean interior made the whole meal comfortable.

It was great visiting with my husband, but next time I'd like to bring my parents and try the lamb chops too.

If you're looking for a clean, well-kept lamb skewer restaurant in Magok, or if you've been put off by the usual gamey lamb smell, this place is worth a visit.
