Suwon BBQ restaurant with open-window patio vibes: Ssosam 208

In short

Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch is a stone-grill pork restaurant in an alley behind Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the medium mixed platter with added snow pork jowl and pork skin, and the staff grilled the pork belly, pork neck and cheongyeopsal at the table; with the windows thrown wide open, the seat felt like an outdoor patio even though it was indoors. Pork belly was the highlight at Ssosam 208, and picking through the different cuts made the meal fun.

Looking inside, there were quite a lot of tables, so it seemed like a good option if you're looking for a place near Suwon Station where a group can eat BBQ together.

Seating by wide-open windows with an outdoor BBQ tent vibe

What struck me when I visited was that one side had the windows wide open, which gave the indoor space a slight outdoor pojangmacha (street tent BBQ bar) feel even though we were inside. Sometimes at outdoor spots you get self-conscious about people passing by, but this street isn't super busy, so it didn't feel awkward or exposed at all. If you're looking for a Suwon Station BBQ spot with that open-air vibe while the weather's still nice, this could be a great fit if you like that atmosphere. 🍂☀️

Our order at Ssosam 208: medium mixed platter plus snow pork jowl and pork skin

The menu at Ssosam 208 Suwon Station Branch has both mixed platters and à la carte options, ranging all the way to makchang (grilled pork intestines) and pork skin. Sticking to just one cut always feels a bit lacking at a BBQ place, so we went with the mixed platter (medium) again. On top of that, we added the snow pork jowl and pork skin we'd been curious about!

Standard side dishes: wild garlic namul and scallion salad

Side dishes and sauces at Ssosam 208, and the wasabi radish salad we remember

Side dishes quietly matter a lot at a BBQ place — the wild garlic namul and scallion salad came standard, and they were great mixed in with the meat. Lettuce and perilla leaves kept coming too whenever we asked!

Plate of various sauces including the wasabi mix

There were quite a few sauce options too. What stood out most was the wasabi mix in the top left!! I expected a straightforward wasabi flavor, but it turned out to have a subtly sweet note mixed in, so it wasn't just a sharp wasabi kick. Piled onto the meat, it cut the richness while adding a nice hint of sweetness — it worked really well.

Stone plate with a slot for cheese fondue

Turns out Ssosam 208 doesn't use a regular grill plate — it's a stone plate. Meat grilled on stone just looks even more appetizing!! And that round section in the middle — you can add cheese fondue there. They sometimes give it out as a receipt-review event gift, so if you're curious, give it a try!!

Unusually, they served kimchi rice noodle soup as a standard side dish. Having a warm, slightly spicy broth before the meat felt like it settled my hungry stomach first 🍜 I couldn't believe this level of quality was just the default — and you can even get a refill :)

Stone-grilled pork belly, pork neck and cheongyeopsal, cooked by the staff

The meat all comes out at once like this, so you get to grill several cuts together, which was nice. And at Ssosam 208, the staff grills everything for you, so you can just relax and eat!👍🏻

They grill it well right beside you, and the sizzling smell kept pulling my eyes back to the grill even mid-conversation, haha.

I tried the pork belly first once it turned golden brown. On the first bite, the seared outside gave a savory flavor first, followed by juicy, moist meat inside — really nice combo.

I especially liked that the fat wasn't overly greasy. If it's grilled wrong, the fat either melts completely away leaving it dry, or it stays too oily — but here it was grilled just right, with a pleasant savory finish 😋

The pork neck was noticeably leaner than the belly. With less fat, the meat's own clean, rich flavor really came through. I worried it might get tough sitting on the stone too long, but it stayed surprisingly moist and got more savory the more I chewed!!

Once the meat is cooked enough, they move it onto the plate for you. The sauce comes pre-made, and it was pleasantly sweet and salty when dipping the meat in!! It cut through the richness while boosting the savory depth 🤤

What does cheongyeopsal (layered pork belly) taste like?

There was also cheongyeopsal (thousand-layer pork), which was a bit unfamiliar to me, and it actually tasted more like pork jowl than pork jowl itself! It had a bit of that pork-belly-like fattiness, but the texture was firmer and chewier. I really liked the thick, dense, chewy bite, so I'll definitely order cheongyeopsal again next time.

Thick-cut cheongyeopsal grilled on the plate

Personally, pork belly was the tastiest, but eating a mix of cuts meant each had its own charm — belly moist and savory, neck clean and lean, cheongyeopsal chewy — so it was fun picking and choosing 🤗

The add-ons: snow pork jowl and pork skin at Ssosam 208

Since pork skin was on the menu, I couldn't pass it up, so we ordered pork skin along with the snow pork jowl! The staff grilled the added snow pork jowl for us too. It turned out to taste less like the pork jowl we usually know and more like woo-samgyeop (thinly sliced beef brisket).

The pork skin, grilled golden brown, had a clearly chewy texture. Even after cooling down it didn't get tough at all — it stayed bouncy and chewy, which felt like pretty good quality!!

You really have to dip pork skin in the soybean powder. Eating it together maximizes the nutty flavor..🫶🏻
