While looking for a lunch spot in Suwon, I went to Ok Doenjang in Hommaesil to have a filling meal with my kid. Not too spicy or intense, and great with rice. Ok Doenjang has all sorts of hot pot (jeongol) menus, so it seemed like a good place to visit with kids too.

Ok Doenjang has a nostalgic ring to it even in the name, and the exterior does have that retro feel, but once you step inside it's got a clean, modern atmosphere too.

The sofa seats with backrests let you sit and eat comfortably with kids. There were plenty of office workers in for lunch and neighborhood folks who treat it as a Hommaesil bar-and-dinner spot, but quite a few people had clearly come, like me, searching for a Suwon lunch spot to visit with kids. The interior is spacious enough that it'd also work well for a meal with parents or a bigger group.

I spent a while just admiring the interior—it's such a nice vibe. That retro feel made me think it'd be a great spot to bring my parents for a Hommaesil lunch too. Nice touch: the backless chairs have space underneath to stash your bag.

Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch has everything from spicy hot pot to a boiled pork hot pot that's easy to eat with kids—so many options that I already want to come back for the spicier boiled pork version too! Lunch between 11am and 3pm gets you a ₩2,000 discount.

The boiled pork hot pot I found at this Suwon lunch spot. It's a hot pot you simmer bubbling and eat warm, so my mouth started watering the second it arrived! It looked packed with boiled pork, plenty enough for a full meal. The broth wasn't intensely rich but clean and refined, easy to eat without feeling heavy.

Eating the boiled pork together with the hot pot broth made it wonderfully soft. The dipping sauce that comes with the boiled pork is a real treat~

Honestly, the hot pot was a little spicy. The pepper flavor was strong, so the kids didn't eat much of it. But then there was boiled pork and ribs too?? We ate well with rice. It's good with kids during the day, and seems like it'd also be great with drinks at night. If this were in my neighborhood, I think I'd already be a regular at it as a Hommaesil bar spot haha.

Gim and side dishes at Ok Doenjang: a gim refill costs 3,000 won

The best thing about visiting Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch with kids is that the gim (seaweed) is genuinely~~~~ delicious. The kids ate it happily, and we loved it with the boiled pork hot pot too. Also, the side dish isn't plain kimchi but kimchi-jjim (braised kimchi), which paired really well with the menu. They fill a whole container with gim, and you'll need to pay for a refill (₩3,000) once it's gone, so keep that in mind while eating~ ^^

The Ok Doenjang gim we wish we had bought more of

Among all the gim I've had recently, this was some of the best, and I really regretted not buying more to take home. You can pack kimchi-jjim and gim to go, so if you love it after your meal, don't have regrets—make sure to buy some!

There's a baby chair, so it's good for visiting with kids too.

Craving a warm hot pot spread in Hommaesil? Ok Doenjang

On this visit, I found the boiled pork hot pot especially well-suited for lunch, with generous ingredients and a warm broth. Add the squid and minari (water celery) pancake and it'd make for a great feast at a Hommaesil bar too. This time I came with my kid for a simple meal, but next time I'd love to come back for the spicier boiled pork with a drink.
