Corkage-free Hongdae Korean BBQ, 600g set for two: Gogikkun Gimchunbae
In short
Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, right on the Gyeongui Line Forest Park walking path. The beef-and-pork set for two — 250g pork neck, 200g rib meat and 150g beef of the day, 600g in total — is grilled entirely by the staff, and while Gogikkun Gimchunbae is corkage-free, we came without a bottle and mixed soju, beer and cider at the table instead. With half-and-half naengmyeon and diced fried rice to finish, the set is just the right amount for two.

A Hongdae Korean BBQ restaurant on the Gyeongui Line Forest Park path
Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch (고기꾼김춘배 홍대숲길점) is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Hongdae that catches your eye as you walk along Gyeongui Line Forest Park. Ever since ipchu (the start of autumn on the lunar calendar) hit, the weather has magically gotten so much cooler — perfect for a stroll along the forest path.

Walking along the Gyeongui Line forest path, Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch stood out. I think it used to be open like an outdoor tented spot (yajang), but it was still a bit hot at this point so it was closed up.

Corkage-free at Gogikkun Gimchunbae — but we forgot the bottle
This Hongdae Korean BBQ spot, Gogikkun Gimchunbae, is corkage-free, which is great! Usually when I go somewhere corkage-free I make sure to bring wine or sake, but this time I had to study the next day so I skipped it.

For the basic table setting, they gave us scallion salad, kimchi, bean sprouts, wild garlic leaves, and pickles, plus salt, ssamjang, wasabi, and fermented anchovy sauce (myeoljeot) to eat with the meat. Myeoljeot bubbling on the grill, dipped in bite by bite — when a Hongdae BBQ place serves myeoljeot, it feels like they really know their stuff, haha.
Gogikkun Gimchunbae menu: cheaper if you order a set

The menu at this Hongdae Korean BBQ spot, Gogikkun Gimchunbae. They sell both beef and pork, and there are various set menus that let you eat more affordably — we went with the beef-and-pork set for two!
What comes in the 600g beef-and-pork set for two

The beef-and-pork set for two comes with pork neck 250g + rib meat 200g + today's beef 150g, 600g total — just the right amount for two people.

Beef of the day was chuck flap, grilled by the staff
Today's beef was chuck flap (salchisal)! The staff put it on the grill first and cooked it for us. At this Hongdae BBQ spot, Gogikkun Gimchunbae, staff grill everything, which was nice because we could just focus on chatting. Maybe that's why I saw so many couples there talking over their meal.

The deliciously grilled chuck flap.

So juicy and really tender. It's great wrapped in wild garlic leaves, and also great just dipped in salt — the meaty aroma and juices really come through. I like beef with a bit of wasabi on it, and since they give you wasabi too, it's delicious topped that way.

How the pork neck and rib meat tasted
Pork neck and rib meat. The rib meat comes attached to the rib bone, and the staff separated it out and grilled it for us.
The plump pork neck looked so delicious. Personally, I liked pork belly more when I was younger, but the older I get, the more I love well-grilled pork neck. Honestly I think the pork neck my younger sibling grills is the best. How does my sibling grill meat so well? Mine is on a totally different level — no matter how many times I ask what the trick is, they just say it's about putting in the effort. Ugh.

Once the pork neck and rib meat were mostly cooked, they put minari (water celery) and kimchi on the grill too and cooked it all together. Minari and kimchi grilled in the meat fat — pure art.

Thick pork neck, well cooked through to the center. Not dry at all, and no gamey smell — perfectly done. Dipped into myeoljeot, the savory flavor doubles. Paired well with the grilled minari and kimchi too, yum.

We hadn't brought any drinks even though it was corkage-free, but I couldn't resist, so I made a soju-beer combo with cider, soju, and beer! Washes down all the meat fat perfectly — the best pairing for delicious food.
Half-and-half naengmyeon: cold broth and spicy in one order

Half-and-half naengmyeon (cold noodles), like a jjajjamyeon-style mix. At Hongdae BBQ places I'm always torn between mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) and bibim-naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles), so having a half-and-half option like this is brilliant! So nice to be able to have both without agonizing over the choice. They also brought us vinegar and mustard to add.

Tangy, refreshing cold noodles that pair perfectly with rich, fatty meat. The mul-naengmyeon washes away the grease, and the bibim-naengmyeon brings on the savory kick!
Finishing the meal with diced fried rice

We already had noodles, but the unwritten rule for Koreans at a Hongdae BBQ place is that the real dessert is fried rice, so we ordered diced fried rice and cooked it up too. Finishing with carb-loaded rice really does make the meal feel complete — this rice lover was fully satisfied again today. I keep finding myself craving meat lately, maybe because the weather is finally cooling down and pulling me toward the grill. Once it gets a bit cooler, I'll have to come back to Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch for its outdoor seating by Gyeongui Line Forest Park, haha.
