Gyeongju café with frozen pineapple mochi: Tareudang

The day I picked up fruit mochi at Tareudang on Hwangridan-gil

While walking along Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, I spotted a dessert where even the size of the fruit looked unreal. At first I thought it was just a rice cake... wait, is the fruit basically the main event? haha. It was Tareudang, selling fruit mochi.

Honestly, peach and mango were the goal that day, but I went late and both were sold outㅠㅠ I took home kiwi and pineapple instead, and spoiler: the disappointment did not last long. Once cut in half, it felt less like fruit inside mochi and more like fruit wrapped in mochi haha. And there was another real twist that day: I put one pineapple mochi in the freezer. Had no idea it would become the top pick of this review haha.

There was a short wait when I visited, but they made and packed each order right away, so the line moved quickly.

Still, popular fruits may sell out if you go late.

Peach... mango... see you next timeㅠㅠ If there is a fruit you really want, I recommend going a little early.

If you are making the rounds of Hwangridan-gil restaurants and cafés and want something fresh rather than bread or cake, this could be a good choice. If you like desserts piled high with fruit, like fruit sandwiches, it will probably suit your taste.

I went for fruit mochi and also found egg tarts. They looked delicious, so I debated it, but held back that day haha. Next time, I am going for peach + mango + egg tarts.

Kiwi and pineapple fruit mochi

I took home two kinds of fruit mochi: kiwi and pineapple.

I liked the packaging too. It was cutely wrapped with a hanji (traditional Korean paper) feel, so it looked nice for a gift, and it would be great to pick up as a snack on the way back to your accommodation.

Finally, opening time.

First, they were pretty big. But when I cut one in half, there was something else that was genuinely surprising.

No... the fruit is basically the main event? haha.

It did not feel like fruit was tucked inside mochi—it felt like the fruit had been wrapped in mochi.

The cream and red bean paste were not excessive; the fruit in the middle was clearly the star. One bite goes chewy → sweet → tangy.

The kiwi's tart freshness hit first, followed by soft cream and chewy mochi. The sweetness was not strong, so I recommend kiwi if you like a clean-tasting dessert.

And then, pineapple. The juice burst out, and I loved how sweet and cool it tasted. Tangy, sweet, chewy—it did everything all by itself haha.

After eating the two, I was even more curious about the peach and mango I missed.

Trying frozen pineapple mochi

They say fruit mochi tastes best on the day you buy it, but I suddenly wondered, “Wouldn't this be even better frozen?” So one pineapple mochi went into the freezer haha. I thawed it for about an hour before trying it... huh? It became a completely different dessert. Cold, chewy mochi, soft cream, and chilled pineapple. It was exactly like a premium Chapssaltteok Ice with a whole piece of fruit inside haha. It was tasty fresh too, but next time I am deliberately freezing a few.

This would be nice when you are craving fruit while traveling, too, right? Somehow, when I travel, I often crave fruit and buy cups of cut fruit before heading back to my accommodation. In Gyeongju, I think I would pick up fruit mochi instead haha. The fruit was generously sized and it takes care of dessert too, so it seemed like a good accommodation snack.

So, how was Tareudang? I went for peach and mango, but both were sold out, so I only bought kiwi and pineapple. Yet it was a place that made me curious about all the other fruits instead. And the unexpected top pick was pineapple mochi that had been frozen then lightly thawed haha. Next time, I will go a little earlier for peach + mango + egg tarts, and buy a few more fruit mochi. Why? Because a few need to go straight into the freezer from the start haha. I went for same-day mochi and somehow became even more serious about iced mochi hehe.
