When you think of Daegu, you think of mungtigi (raw beef). So I went to Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch, famous for it.

What the restaurant looks like from the street

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch sits right in the Bokhyeon-oeori food alley. The exterior is a bold red, so it's easy to spot. This was actually my first time visiting this alley, and there were so many hot spots around. They only serve same-day butchered dairy cow beef‼️ I walked in with high expectations.
Inside: partitioned booths and the self-serve fried egg corner

The inside is way bigger than I expected. Every table has a partition, so you can eat without worrying about the next table over. With so much space and seating, this would also be a great spot for group meetups, work dinners, or family outings.

And here's a great touch — there's a self-serve fried egg corner👏🏻 Perfect as a drinking snack before the main dishes arrive.

We ordered the A Course (small).
What comes with the A Course, small, for 2 people

They fry a fried egg for each person.

The basic side dishes came out — the kind that go well with raw beef. Cucumber, sweet potato sticks, peanuts, salad, and yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), all generously served. And the fresh tripe and spinal cord you can only really enjoy at home‼️

Beef radish soup and tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes) came next. This tteokbokki was Sinjeon-style, which is exactly my style🩵

They also serve the nostalgic pink sausage.

Topping cucumber with pollack roe was so good.

How the same-day butchered raw beef and yukhoe tasted
Finally, the raw beef and yukhoe set arrived. Being same-day butchered, it was incredibly fresh and had great texture. I dipped it in salt-sesame oil and it was so chewy with wonderful beefy flavor. The yukhoe was soft yet had a satisfying bite — really delicious.

The raw beef seasoning sauce, loaded with garlic, was genuinely delicious.

Freshly cooked cabbage pancake! The natural sweetness of the cabbage makes it good on its own, but dipping it in the tteokbokki sauce from earlier is a golden combo👍

Final verdict: is Bonghwa Saenggogi worth it for a group dinner?
The freshness and composition of the same-day butchered mungtigi exceeded my expectations. The chewy raw beef got tastier with every bite, and the savory yukhoe alongside it was excellent too. On top of that, the tripe, spinal cord, Sinjeon-style tteokbokki, beef radish soup, and the self-serve fried egg corner were all great as drinking snacks.
The interior is spacious and well divided with partitions, so it would work well for group meetups or work dinners too. From the quality of the fresh meat to every single side dish, this was a highly satisfying visit. I'd recommend Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch as a Daegu raw beef spot, a place for Daegu mungtigi, and a Bokhyeon-oeori favorite.
