Daegu mungtigi restaurant with unlimited fried eggs: Bonghwa Saenggogi

In short

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch is a mungtigi (thick-cut raw beef) and raw beef restaurant at Bokhyeon-ogeori in Buk-gu, Daegu, near Kyungpook National University. The A Course for two costs 60,000 won and the self-made yukhoe (beef tartare) rice ball 8,000 won, and the course brought raw beef, yukhoe, spinal cord marrow, beef radish soup, tteokbokki and pajeon, with fried eggs unlimited and cooked at the table. The same-day-butchered hanwoo cow beef, sliced along the grain, had such a good chew that Bonghwa Saenggogi is worth a repeat visit.

Today I'm introducing a raw beef (mungtigi) spot in Daegu I visited a while back — Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch (봉화생고기 복현점)!!

What is the inside of Bonghwa Saenggogi like?

The interior of Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch has a wood-toned design that feels clean yet cozy.

There were partitions between the tables, which was nice for eating more privately.

Even though I visited on a weekday, there were quite a few people — seems like this place has gotten a lot of word of mouth!!

This was another great point — the fried eggs are unlimited!!! You get to cook them yourself, which was fun too haha.

Menu and the price of the A Course for two

Here's the menu~

Menu board at Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch

The main menu has raw beef, grilled beef brisket (yeontanchadol) and beef tartare, and sides include yukhoe rice ball, chicken feet, and fish cake soup. There are also set courses sized for however many people you have!! Since we wanted to try both the raw beef and beef tartare, we ordered the A Course for two (₩60,000) and a self-made yukhoe rice ball!

As soon as we ordered, the side dishes arrived quickly! I was surprised by how generous even the side dishes were.

Spinal cord marrow: the side dish we tried for the first time

This spinal cord marrow (deunggol) was especially unique! I honestly hadn't had much occasion to eat it before, so this was my first time trying it,

and dipped generously into sesame oil salt, it had a nutty flavor with an unusual texture — I finished a whole plate in no time!! For raw beef the seasoning sauce is everything too, and this one had just the right saltiness and savoriness to pair with the meat.

Beef radish soup, tteokbokki and pajeon sides

I honestly thought the side dishes that came out first were it, but food kept coming out — for a two-person course, I thought this was really good value. Beef radish soup, tteokbokki, and pajeon (green onion pancake) all arrived too.

The quality was just as good as the main dishes. The freshly grilled pajeon especially made me crave makgeolli the moment I took a bite. It happened to be raining that day too, so it tasted even better haha.

Yukhoe (beef tartare) rice ball for 8,000 won

This is the yukhoe (beef tartare) rice ball (₩8,000).

Ingredients laid out for the yukhoe rice ball

Considering the usual price of a basic rice ball, this seemed like really good value for the amount of yukhoe packed in. The taste was great too — fresh yukhoe with just the right seasoning, perfect as a meal to go alongside everything else.

How did the raw beef and yukhoe taste?

Finally, the main dishes — raw beef and beef tartare — arrived!

Can you see that color? They say proper mungtigi won't fall off even if you flip it over, and I wanted to try flipping it, but unfortunately I couldn't because the yukhoe was right there next to it haha. It was quite a generous portion for a two-person set.

Let's dig in. I tried the raw beef first, and the meat was really, really chewy and tender.

Female hanwoo raw beef sliced along the grain

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch says they use fresh female hanwoo beef butchered the same day, sliced along the grain. Maybe that's why the chewing texture was so excellent, and the beefy aroma that came through with each chew was so good too. Dipping it in the accompanying soy-based sauce made my whole mouth happy — genuinely delicious.

After tasting the raw beef, I naturally had high expectations for the yukhoe that came with it, and it lived up to them exactly. You could really feel how fresh the meat was, and honestly the seasoning sauce plays such a big role for yukhoe — but this sauce was fantastic too.

Is Bonghwa Saenggogi worth a visit? Final verdict

The result was extremely, extremely satisfying. It was the kind of meat that makes you feel like you could drink unlimited soju — truly the best. (There's a free bottle of soju with a review event too haha.)

The meat quality at Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch was so good on this visit that I want to come back and pay with my own money next time. (The meat is seriously delicious, you really have to try it.) Since it's near Kyungpook National University, I'd recommend it to Kyungpook students, to anyone looking for a good raw beef restaurant in Daegu, and to anyone looking for a good spot near Bokhyeon-ogeori.
