Suwon bar 3-person yukhoe sushi and bibimbap set: Yukhoe Dokjon

In short

Yukhoe Dokjon Suwon Station Branch is a chilled hanwoo yukhoe (raw beef tartare) bar on the first floor of Dream Plaza on Suwon Station's Rodeo Street. A visitor who doesn't usually enjoy yukhoe tried a 3-person set of hanwoo yukhoe assortment (yukhoe plus sashimi), yukhoe sushi and yukhoe bibimbap, and found the beef chewy, tender and free of any gamy smell, though the bibimbap sauce ran a little salty and was fixed with a free rice refill. Open into the early morning, it works well for after-work meetups and dates.

Hanwoo yukhoe table spread at Yukhoe Dokjon Suwon Station Branch

It was so hot, so hot — and suddenly there's an autumn breeze. It's a rare quiet holiday, and I wanted to eat something delicious and get some energy back, so I headed to 'Yukhoe Dokjon Suwon Station Branch,' a hanwoo (Korean beef) place everyone's been talking about.

Confession: I don't usually go for yukhoe (raw beef tartare). The texture always felt unfamiliar and I just never reached for it. But this time my mind completely changed.

Suwon Station's Rodeo Street has huge foot traffic and restaurants constantly rising and falling in popularity, so I went to see for myself why it gets such good reviews as a Suwon Station favorite. Yukhoe Dokjon has been building trust for 10 years at Suwon Station as the only chilled hanwoo yukhoe specialist there, so I went in with high expectations.

Interior atmosphere and seating

The interior is simple and open-plan. There are those stow-away round stools you see at charcoal grill places, so yep, this is definitely a meat restaurant, haha. The low lighting seems great for a date or a drink. This place stays open until 2 or 3 in the morning.

Hanwoo yukhoe assortment — it changed the mind of someone who doesn't eat yukhoe

Popping the egg yolk and mixing it in well, then taking a bite along with the mu-sprouts and pear — the moment I did, 'ah, this place is the real deal' just came out of my mouth. The beef was so fresh, with zero gamy smell, that it made me forget every yukhoe I'd had before. It was chewy yet so tender it practically melted in my mouth, and my chopsticks genuinely wouldn't stop moving. It won over even my palate, which never went for yukhoe — that says it all. They said they use 100% chilled hanwoo, never frozen yukhoe, and the quality really was on another level.

The yukhoe and beef sashimi were arranged into a flower shape. You can see the grain of the hanwoo is still alive.

How is the yukhoe so chewy and yet so tender at the same time? My chopsticks were kept busy.

Beef sashimi for the first time

This was my first time trying beef sashimi and I was completely won over. One bite dipped into sesame oil and salt, another bite loaded with black sesame sauce, and yet another bite combined with pear, mu-sprouts and pickled ginger.

Hanwoo yukhoe sushi

The thick, generous layer of yukhoe blended with the rice, giving a filling, satisfying feel while still sitting easy on the stomach.

Yukhoe bibimbap — if it's too salty, refill the rice

Hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap topped with egg yolk

There's a generous portion of yukhoe. The egg yolk sits so prettily on top. The seasoning comes pre-drizzled, and after mixing it and taking a bite, it seemed a bit salty, so I added more rice. Rice refills are free.
