Some days after work you just want a good meal with a light drink, or a date with a bit of atmosphere. On a recent weekday evening I was craving clean, tidy Japanese food, so I headed to Izawa Yeouido Direct Store, famous as the gyukatsu spot near Yeouido Station.

What is Izawa Yeouido Direct Store?

Izawa Yeouido Direct Store, the gyukatsu (beef cutlet) specialist near Yeouido Station, is the standout brand that started Korea's whole gyukatsu culture, introducing it here for the first time in 2015.

Under the belief that "good food starts with good ingredients," they use carefully selected beef, a deeply researched aging process, and a special recipe — which made me even more excited going in.

Clean interior, a spot celebrities visit too

The moment I stepped into Izawa Yeouido Direct Store, the warm, tidy atmosphere really stood out. The modern but understated Japanese restaurant interior makes it a great choice for a Yeouido date course.

On one wall, quite a few celebrity signatures were hanging up, which confirmed this really is a spot celebrities visit — that got me even more excited to order.

What impressed me especially was the staff's attitude. Even though the restaurant was busy at the time, the staff were friendly from seating through service, which put me in a great mood before the food even arrived.

Gyukatsu set and steki set — what we ordered

We ordered Izawa's signature, most-recommended dishes: the gyukatsu set (sirloin) and the steki set (sirloin). Both came out as a neat, tidy full table setting — visually a pass from the start.

Gyukatsu set (sirloin)

This is a beef cutlet made from carefully selected sirloin.

The outside has a savory, crisp batter, and inside the rosy-pink meat stays juicy and moist — genuinely delicious.

Steki set (sirloin)

The steki set has no batter — just sirloin lightly seared on the outside and thinly sliced.

The marbling and grain of the meat were fully visible, stirring up my appetite before it even hit the grill.

Grill it your own way on the mini brazier, hot to the last bite

The biggest draw of Izawa Yeouido Direct Store, also a favorite for lunch in Yeouido, is grilling the meat yourself on a mini charcoal brazier set at each table. Being able to freely choose your doneness — rare, medium, well-done — to your own taste was really appealing.

The brazier had strong heat, so the outside crisped up and the inside cooked through soft and moist in no time.

Whenever the flame went out, a staff member relit it right away, so the flow of the meal never broke and we could keep enjoying the steak. Taking a bite after grilling, the rich juices melted right in the mouth.

Best of all, we could eat it hot all the way through the meal, and adding a bit of Izawa's special sauce and fine wasabi deepened the flavor even more.

Chatting in a calm atmosphere while leisurely grilling delicious beef made for a perfect Yeouido date.

If you're looking for a Japanese restaurant near Yeouido Station, I'd recommend Izawa, the original, without hesitation.

Beyond the gyukatsu, which shows off the true crisp-outside-tender-inside ideal, there's a wide range of Izawa signature dishes — steki, ramen, mazesoba, and more — so there's plenty of choice.
