Suwon Korean buffet for a light dinner after wedding meetups: Boriook

These days I've been eating out almost every day for wedding invitation gatherings, and honestly my stomach's been taking a beating from all the heavy, greasy food… haha. I kept craving something healthy and gentle on the stomach!! 🥹 A little while ago, my fiancé and I were trying to figure out where to go for dinner, and we found a Suwon-style hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) spot near Mangpo Station that looked as tidy and wholesome as home cooking! It's called 'Boriook Main Branch' (보리옥 본점) — a place where you get a proper main dish alongside a hearty buffet corner packed with all kinds of namul (seasoned vegetables) and side dishes you can help yourself to.

Inside Boriook: a roomy dining room that suits parents and older guests

The moment I walked in, the clean, modern hanok-style interior caught my eye! The tables are spaced generously apart and the whole place felt open and comfortable, so I immediately thought it'd be perfect for family gatherings or taking parents and older relatives along 🥰

Each table has a tablet for easy ordering, and there was a friendly guide explaining how the meal works too!

Boriook's signature sets and how to order

Boriook follows a one-menu-per-person rule! Order a main set and you'll automatically get a comforting bowl of doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and barley rice with it 🍲

What is on the unlimited self-serve bar?

As soon as we ordered, we headed straight for the self-serve buffet corner! You'd normally assume a 'buffet' might be a bit lower quality, but Boriook was nothing like that at all 🥹👍

True to its reputation as an unlimited-refill barley rice spot in Suwon, there were two kinds of rice — barley and white — and each namul, from dried radish greens to seasoned bellflower root, soybean sprouts, and seaweed stem, along with the kimchi, was prepared with real care and looked spotless!

On top of that, there were fresh lettuce wraps, crispy fritters, and even plum and peach drinks plus coffee to enjoy after the meal — I was so satisfied 🤍

How do the grilled mackerel and gochujang pork sets taste?

While we were chatting away, the main dishes arrived! The grilled mackerel was crispy on the outside and moist inside, with all the excess oil cooked off — no fishy taste at all, just really savory 🐟

And the gochujang pork, topped with a bit of chives, was just the right amount of sweet and spicy with a nice smoky char — wrapped in lettuce with barley rice, it was absolutely delicious!

Barley bibimbap mixed with namul, your way

They gave us barley rice in a brass bowl and topped it nicely with the namul we'd brought from the self-serve bar!

Each table has its own sesame oil and special gochujang (red chili paste), so you can season it and mix it however you like 😋

Mixing it all together and taking a big bite, then having a spoonful of the bubbling, savory doenjang jjigae alongside it — that was pure happiness!

After being worn out by greasy, heavy meals out, filling up on fresh vegetables and namul like this felt like a genuinely healthy dinner — my body and mind both felt healed 🌿
