Hongdae bakery Emmental 10-second reheat: Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam
In short
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a takeout-only bakery in Seodaemun, Seoul, near Yeonnam-dong and Hongdae, best known for its garlic baguette but consistent across the whole menu. This visit covered the garlic baguette, Emmental cheese bread, cappuccino bread and a bacon ciabatta sample, and the best combinations were Emmental after 10 seconds in the microwave and cappuccino bread with cold white milk. Mandong Jegwa is worth a stop for far more than the garlic baguette alone.

What kind of bakery is Mandong Jegwa? A takeout-only shop in Yeonnam-dong

I go to Hongdae so often that I'm always hunting for something new nearby, but there's one bakery in Yeonnam-dong I genuinely love. It's Mandong Jegwa (만동제과), haha.

I'd visited a few times before and tried a bunch of the breads, and it randomly came to mind again so I stopped by. This isn't a sit-down café — you pick your bread and take it to go!! If you want to relax with coffee too, it's better to pack it up and head somewhere else or take it home.

Parking at Mandong Jegwa: use the nearby public lots
Parking is a bit of a letdown, tbh. There's no easy space to pull up right in front, so if you're driving, it's easier to use a public parking lot nearby. I usually stop by whenever I happen to be in Hongdae anyway, so this time was just a casual drop-in too.

You know that feeling when you're craving bread in Yeonnam-dong, or after eating a meal near Hongdae you suddenly want bread again? Please tell me I'm not the only one 😂

So I personally love the route of coming to Hongdae, walking over to Yeonnam-dong, and picking up a bread to take home. Mandong Jegwa is exactly the place that comes to mind for that. Yeonnam-dong has a lot of bakeries with strong personalities, but I've eaten here so many times that I trust my picks more here.

If anyone asked me for a Yeonnam-dong bakery / Hongdae favorite recommendation, I'd definitely bring up Mandong Jegwa, haha. And honestly it'd be a shame to think of this place as only famous for the garlic baguette.

After trying the whole menu, can you pick any bread at Mandong Jegwa?
I've eaten pretty much the entire Mandong Jegwa menu at this point, and honestly, whichever bread I picked, it was consistently good overall — so even first-timers don't need to overthink their choice!

You could really just pick based on whatever you're craving that day and the odds of a miss are low, haha. Still, when I think of Mandong Jegwa, the garlic baguette comes to mind first! Walking in, you can't miss the big chunky baguettes, and once the garlic scent hits you, it's hard to just walk past.

The signature bread: Mandong Jegwa's garlic baguette
Mandong Jegwa's garlic baguette is crisp on the outside, with a deep garlicky flavor baked into the inside. The sauce isn't just lightly brushed on the surface — the flavor really soaks all the way through, so even one piece has real presence. The plain flavor of the baguette and the sweet, savory garlic sauce work together really well, and it goes great with coffee too, haha. I personally love garlic bread, so I naturally end up grabbing a garlic baguette whenever I come here.

So if it's your first visit, starting with the signature item isn't a bad idea! If you're doing a bakery pilgrimage while looking for a Yeonnam-dong bakery / Hongdae favorite, this is a place worth stopping at at least once, haha.
Cheese lovers: Emmental, 10 seconds in the microwave
But the garlic baguette isn't the only thing I want to recommend. If you love cheese, definitely grab the Mandong Jegwa Emmental!

The Emmental is one of my favorites among Mandong Jegwa's breads. It's tasty as-is, but I have my own preferred method — microwaving it for exactly about 10 seconds. The cheese warms up slightly, the flavor deepens a lot, and the bread turns soft — it's basically heaven, lol.

That distinctive cheese savoriness melts and rises up a little, and it tastes even better warm. If you're planning to eat it at home, definitely grab the Emmental. If you love cheese in particular, I highly recommend it 🙌

Cappuccino bread with cold white milk, my favorite pairing
There's a combo I really love. It's Mandong Jegwa's cappuccino bread with white milk. Pairing the cappuccino bread with cold white milk seems to bring out the sweet, soft flavor of the bread even more.

Eating it with coffee is nice too, but oddly enough I find it tastes even better with white milk, haha.

The cappuccino bread needs refrigeration, so they pack it in a cooler bag like this! If you like cappuccino bread, try this combo once — it's a totally different experience from eating the bread alone.

What I took home from Mandong Jegwa and the pairings I recommend
If you're hunting for a Yeonnam-dong bakery / Hongdae favorite, don't just stop at the garlic baguette — pick something that fits your taste too, haha. It had been a while since my last visit, but as expected, I left satisfied.

The garlic baguette was still delicious, and I also grabbed my favorite Emmental along with a cappuccino bread.

On top of that, I added the bacon ciabatta I tried as a sample! I ended up buying a bit more bread than I originally planned, but eating them one by one at home, I realized none of it was wasted.
- If you love cheese, go with the Emmental!
- If you love garlic, go with the garlic baguette!
- If you like a chewy texture, the bacon ciabatta is also recommended!
- Definitely try the cappuccino bread together with white milk, haha.
Since I'm in Hongdae so often, Mandong Jegwa is the Yeonnam-dong bakery / Hongdae favorite I keep coming back to whenever the craving hits!!! Trying multiple items like I did and finding your own favorite bread is part of the fun of a bakery pilgrimage 🤎
