Weekend dinner reservation at Hyoeunok, a Gyeongju Korean restaurant

In short

Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch is a Korean set-meal (hanjeongsik) restaurant near Bomun Tourist Complex in Gyeongju, a 7-minute drive away and close to Donggungwon and Bird Park. At 6pm on a Saturday six groups were waiting, but a Naver reservation meant walking straight in for the Ppyeoberest beef rib hot pot at spice level 0 with an extra spicy sauce for 1,000 won, easy to share with a child. For a weekend dinner in Gyeongju, booking Hyoeunok ahead is essential.

Hyoeunok, a Korean restaurant (hanjeongsik) near Bomun in Gyeongju, came recommended by a local while I was on a food trip — somewhere worth checking out.

Hyoeunok is a great Korean restaurant to hit near Bomun if you're traveling in Gyeongju. It's easy to eat with kids given the variety of dishes, and the Korean-style interior — very Gyeongju — also makes it a good pick to bring foreign friends.

Let me introduce Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch, a spot that even locals recommend :)

Is Hyoeunok worth a stop on a Gyeongju trip?

It's near Bomun Tourist Complex, so it's easy to build a route around.

Hyoeunok is near Donggungwon and Bird Park, and about 3.9km from Bomun Tourist Complex — a 7-minute drive, which made it easy to fit into a sightseeing route.

It's open daily from 11 to 21, with a break time from 15:00 to 17:00, so keep that in mind when visiting. Reservations can be made via Naver Reservation, and since there can be waiting on weekends, I'd recommend booking ahead.

The main menu is the eye-catching Ppyeoberest Original, plus gomtang (bone broth soup) and galbitang (short rib soup) that are easy to eat with kids — good menu for family visits.

Does Hyoeunok have its own parking?

There are two parking options.

Hyoeunok's own lot holds about 10 cars, behind the building. If it's full, there's a free public lot you can use.

Our own lot was full, so we used the public lot — it was right in front of Hyoeunok, so easy to get to, and there was plenty of space, which was convenient.

How long is the weekend wait at Hyoeunok?

There was a waiting list of 6 teams around 6pm on a weekend evening.

I was recommended this place as a Bomun-area favorite among locals, and when we visited at 6pm on a Saturday, there was already a wait~

Our family had reserved ahead, so we got seated right away with no waiting. If you're planning to visit on a weekend evening, I'd really recommend booking in advance.

What is the dining room at Hyoeunok like?

The interior captures Korean beauty as it is.

You feel the Korean aesthetic starting from the waiting area. Fitting for a Korean restaurant in Gyeongju, there's a lot of Korean-style interior added, which makes it good for visiting with elders or with foreign friends.

Inside, mountain-themed paintings paired with mother-of-pearl inlay looked great together. Hyoeunok is genuinely popular on weekends — a Bomun-area favorite drawing both tourists and locals alike.

What's on the menu at Hyoeunok?

Beef rib hot pot — the Ppyeoberest hot pot.

Hyoeunok's signature Ppyeoberest beef rib hot pot

The signature dish is the visually overwhelming Ppyeoberest beef rib hot pot, and since the spice level is adjustable, it's easy to eat with kids too.

High chairs and kids' tableware are provided, making it a good place for families.

How did the Ppyeoberest hot pot taste?

They say you can judge a place by its kimchi, right?!

The kimchi and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) here are good from the start. I don't usually eat much kimchi, but I refilled it here — that made me look forward to the main dish even more.

They pile the bones up like a mountain, and I immediately understood why it's called Ppyeoberest (bone + Everest).

It comes as a course with shabu-shabu beef, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), and gondre juk (thistle rice porridge) to go along with it, so ordering just one is enough to fill a whole family.

Under the meat there's plenty of bean sprouts, minari (water dropwort), and napa cabbage, which won over even the pickier adult palates.

Once it starts boiling, you eat the vegetables first — fragrant minari, crunchy bean sprouts, cabbage, plus chewy mushrooms, all with such varied texture that even people on a diet would love it.

The main meat is a mix of large beef ribs and ox foot, boiled down so soft that it falls apart the moment you touch it — even a young child could eat it well.

Spice levels and the 1,000-won spicy sauce at Hyoeunok

If you want it spicy, you can adjust the hot pot's spice level, and if you're with kids, you can order an added spicy sauce separately (₩1,000).

We were with our child, so we went with spice level 0 (mild) and added the spicy sauce — it suited our taste perfectly.

After fishing out the meat, you can also enjoy beef shabu-shabu, and if you want more, extra shabu-shabu beef can be added separately.

Gondre juk served as the finishing course

The finish is Korean-dessert-level carbs — a full course from kalguksu to gondre juk. Especially the gondre juk made with the rich broth was fragrant and a really good way to end the meal!

If you're looking for a Korean restaurant near Bomun in Gyeongju, how about Hyoeunok, recommended even by locals?! If you want something a bit different among Gyeongju's food options, it's a great stop to add to your travel itinerary.
